Subject: Is there a link to folk radio
From: annamill
Date: 29 Nov 00 - 05:58 PM

I have access to music all day if I'd like and I would. I can play it low in my cubicle. Now all I need is something I would like to listen to that's free.

Are there any links to music that plays folk or blues all day? What fun! It would make work easier for me.

Thank you in advance.

Love, annamill

annamill, Here's part of an answer. Maybe this'll get ya through half of Thursday at least.

Folk Roots/Folk Branches Folk Roots/Folk Branches with Mike Regenstreif on CKUT-FM in Montreal and in RealAudio on the Web is Montreal's only broadly-defined folk music radio program. The show is heard Thursday mornings from 9:00-11:30 (eastern time).

I copied this from my bookmarks page.
Enjoy,
Jim Krause

There's a substitute hosting my show tomorrow. I'll be back again next Thursday.

I'm off to Toronto early in the morning for the Roots & Traditional advisory commitee meetings for the Juno Awards.

This one was posted recently, too and has no commercials, it is private and has a fantastic selection. I've also never had net congestion probs with it: www.hober.com/hober.ram.

Have fun,

One of the most popular is Hober, a Real Audio streaming media feed that presents folk and other "hand made&auot; music 24 hours a day without commercial inturruption or banner adds. It's pretty hard to beat. Since Mudcat Radio is a Real Media feed as well, I assume everyone has already downloaded and installed RealPlayer.

I downloaded free winamp and from there accessed free spinner.com software, selected Country and Folk as my category and now I get a list of several stations showing What's Playing on each. Allows me to switch channels easily if I want.

I don't know about all-day, every day but KPFA (kpfa.org) has RealAudio broadcasts of its folk programs on Sundays 11 to 6 PST, to soul, blues, and jazz on Saturdays, and world music 10 to 12 daily, plus other kinds of music at various times of the night.

Ah, the 'cat never fails to give me just what I need - a place to let the world know about something cool I just got in my e-mail (from Redherring.com). It's a streaming audio site called FRISKIT. You need a version of RealAudio for it to work, but even as we speak I'm streaming Joshua Redman - 'Live at the House of Blues'. You can pick 'yer own music and you can purchase some or just listen. You can also suggest a URL that you like. Blickie to Friskit

ENJOY!!

I like www.live365.com. Since I am hard core old time, my favorites are "Rats Won't Stay Where There's Music" and "Appalachian Old Time Throwdown," but it it looks like there's something there for everybody. There are several different Smithsonian Folkways channels, for example.

With all due respect....

If RealPlayer worked on your old PC it should work on your new one.

However, if you are using RealPlayer at work, it is very picky about proper configuration. In particular, if you run RealPlayer and choose View/Preferences you will see several tabs. If the settings under "Transport" and "Proxy" are not correct, RealPlayer will be unable to play the streaming audio you want. Unfortunately, the settings, particularly the proxy settings, are specific to your organization. There are no generic settings, which I could suggest that will work in any situation.

To get the information you need, you should talk to the people who help you when you have problems with your PC. If RealPlayer is a "supported" application in your organization, they should happily give you the info you need. Otherwise, you might have to ask the right person in the right way.

I'm able to get Hober from kat/katlaughing's link. It,s great but I can't get it when I put the web address in my keyword and therefore can't add it to my favorites and I'm afraid if the link disappears I won"t be able to access the site.Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't forget to listen to Mudcat Radio. The archives are under radio at the top of this page.

I avoid programs I have to listen to at a set time & try for internet only or archived programs. One of my favorites is Chicago's WFMT Midnight Special, a 3 hr program that changes weekly.

If you want lots of folk links to explore the South Australian Folk Centre has a great annotatated list.

Meadowmuskrat, It's not clear which favorites you're talking about, but I've got kat/katlaughing's link to Hober in my RealPlayer favorites & it works fine. If it's your browser favorites, try making their homepage your favorite, then connect. Go here
