Subject: it's in the book From: GUEST,tenbears Date: 29 Nov 00 - 08:58 PM I remember that we had a record when I was a kid in the Fifties that featured two songs, a sermon based on Litle Bo Peep and It's In The Book.Only one line comes to mind-Mrs O Malley down in the valley suffered from ulcers I understand.....Any good soul out there remember Grandma's Lye Soap? I'm also after the lyrics of Bloop Bleep by Danny Kaye. Thanks folks. |
Subject: Lyr Add: IT'S IN THE BOOK (Johnny Standley) From: GUEST,Lyle Date: 29 Nov 00 - 09:05 PM I'm not sure where I got this from, so I can't give credit where credit is due, but this is what I can find right away. There are probably other notes around somewhere! And I know there are TONS of additional verses... Lyle
You remember Grandma's lye soap,
CHORUS: So let's all sing for Grandma's lye soap,
Little Herman and brother Vermin
Mrs. O'Malley down in the valley Here is the text of part one of It's In The Book, as transcribed from "Dr. Demento Gooses Mother", Rhino 71919, 1995. Original issue was Capitol single 2249, 1952. For those of you who have never heard it, it is likely that it will make no sense at all. Grandpa Vern Berry, who died year before last, was an old time fiddler at Silver Dollar City near Branson, Missouri. He told me that he had seen Johnny Standley do this live. ~~ Picture a fellow dressed as an old time preacher, thumping the book to punctuate his words, and you might get a glimmer of how it was. I have a message for you, a very sad message. My, my subject for this evening will be Little Bo Peep. It says here, Little Bo Peep was a little girl, has lost her sheep, and doesn't know where to find them. Now, that's reasonable, isn't it? It's, it's reasonable to assume if Little Bo Peep had lost her sheep, it's only natural that she wouldn't know where to find them. That, that basically is reasonable. But leave them alone, now that overwhelms me, completely overwhelms me. The man said, she lost her sheep, turns right around and boldly states, she doesn't know where to find them, and then has the stupid audacity to say, leave them alone. Now, now, now think for a moment, think, if the sheep were lost and you couldn't find them, you'd have to leave them alone, wouldn't you? So leave them alone, leave them alone, It's In The Book. Leave them alone, and they, they being the sheep, they will come home. Ah, yes, they'll come home. Oh, there'll be a brighter day tomorrow, they will come home, It's In The Book. They will come home, a-wagging their tails, pray tell me what else could they wag? They will come home, a-wagging their tails behind them. Behind them, did we think they'd wag them in front? Of course, they, they might have come home in reverse. They could have done that, I really don't know. But nonetheless, It's In The Book.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: it's in the book From: Bill D Date: 29 Nov 00 - 09:13 PM ...that record was one of the treasure of my youth....(we have had threads on this before, but I can't get the SuperSearch to do anything right now) but Lyle has done a VERY good job of describing it) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: it's in the book From: Dale Rose Date: 29 Nov 00 - 09:36 PM I was about to struggle with the supersearch myself, when I remembered that there is a shortcut to it http://www.mudcat.org/@NewSSResults.cfm which works even if the one on the front page does not. I also looked at Lyle's info and saw that it was what I posted back a couple of years ago. So he may not remember where he got it, but he certainly has a better filing system than I do. Once I write something, it is effectively lost! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: it's in the book From: GUEST,Lyle Date: 29 Nov 00 - 11:01 PM Dale Rose - Sorry I couldn't give you credit! But when I saw your post (whenever it was!) I knew it was too good to let it get away, so I copied it and put it in a file. Somehow in doing that, I left your name off - but it has been added now. I couldn't get into super search either. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: it's in the book From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Mar 02 - 11:32 PM Apparently everyone overlooked Tenbears' other request for "Bloop-Bleep." I was unable to find the lyrics, but I did learn that this song, which was recorded by Danny Kaye, Woody Herman and others, was actually written by Frank Loesser. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: it's in the book From: GUEST,mrbisok@aol Date: 29 Mar 02 - 12:05 AM Just read the thread. No one mentioned that "It's in the Book" was a spoof on fundamentalist preaching, a-la Jerry Falwell. My liberal, yet church going parents, got hold of the record and I remember them smiling slyly as they listened. I, around age 12, sort of got it, played the thing over and over. It was all in the delivery: "little bo peep, (pause) waas, (pause) a little girl. ... and doesn't know wh-air (Billy Graham style) to find them." The song about Grandma's lye soap? It's a spoof on revivalist hymns. The hand clapping on the chorus was the icing on the cake. Me? I'm a sunday-school teaching Lutheran these days. But thankfully, long ago Johnny Standly alerted me to phony-baloney preaching. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: it's in the book From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 30 Mar 02 - 02:03 PM It always amazes me what can be found in Google. A lot of the stuff is under copyright. I worry that these sites will be lost if the big guys continue to eat up the small ones and enforce their "rights." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: it's in the book From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 May 04 - 07:07 PM BLOOP BLEEP was written by Frank Loesser. It's been recorded by Woody Herman, Harry James, Danny Kaye, Frank Loesser, and Gary McFarland. I've found, by lots of experience searching for lyrics on the Internet, that when you read "[song x] by [person y]" you can't assume that "by" means "written by." Likely as not it means "recorded by." |
