I remember that we had a record when I was a kid in the Fifties that featured two songs, a sermon based on Litle Bo Peep and It's In The Book.Only one line comes to mind-Mrs O Malley down in the valley suffered from ulcers I understand.....Any good soul out there remember Grandma's Lye Soap? I'm also after the lyrics of Bloop Bleep by Danny Kaye. Thanks folks.

I'm not sure where I got this from, so I can't give credit where credit is due, but this is what I can find right away. There are probably other notes around somewhere! And I know there are TONS of additional verses...

Lyle

You remember Grandma's lye soap,
Good for everything in the home;
And the secret was in the scrubbing,
It wouldn't suds and wouldn't foam.

CHORUS: So let's all sing for Grandma's lye soap,
Good for everything on the place;
The pots and kettles, the dirty dishes,
And for your hands and for your face.

Little Herman and brother Vermin
Had and aversion to washing their ears;
Grandma scrubbed them with the lye soap,
Now they haven't heard a word in years.

Mrs. O'Malley down in the valley
Suffered from ulcers, I understand;
She swallowed a cake of Grandma's lye soap:
Has the cleanest ulcers in the land!

Here is the text of part one of It's In The Book, as transcribed from "Dr. Demento Gooses Mother", Rhino 71919, 1995. Original issue was Capitol single 2249, 1952. For those of you who have never heard it, it is likely that it will make no sense at all. Grandpa Vern Berry, who died year before last, was an old time fiddler at Silver Dollar City near Branson, Missouri. He told me that he had seen Johnny Standley do this live. ~~ Picture a fellow dressed as an old time preacher, thumping the book to punctuate his words, and you might get a glimmer of how it was.

I have a message for you, a very sad message. My, my subject for this evening will be Little Bo Peep. It says here, Little Bo Peep was a little girl, has lost her sheep, and doesn't know where to find them. Now, that's reasonable, isn't it? It's, it's reasonable to assume if Little Bo Peep had lost her sheep, it's only natural that she wouldn't know where to find them. That, that basically is reasonable. But leave them alone, now that overwhelms me, completely overwhelms me. The man said, she lost her sheep, turns right around and boldly states, she doesn't know where to find them, and then has the stupid audacity to say, leave them alone. Now, now, now think for a moment, think, if the sheep were lost and you couldn't find them, you'd have to leave them alone, wouldn't you? So leave them alone, leave them alone, It's In The Book. Leave them alone, and they, they being the sheep, they will come home. Ah, yes, they'll come home. Oh, there'll be a brighter day tomorrow, they will come home, It's In The Book. They will come home, a-wagging their tails, pray tell me what else could they wag? They will come home, a-wagging their tails behind them. Behind them, did we think they'd wag them in front? Of course, they, they might have come home in reverse. They could have done that, I really don't know. But nonetheless, It's In The Book.

And the chorus cited above really doesn't do justice to the way J. Standley belted it out! *Yes...I had the record, too*...there was a critique/explication of 'Rockabye Baby' on side 2, also- asking about the desirability of rocking poor little babies way up there when the wind was blowing...ending with the line..."down will come baby, cradle and....oh, what a gooey mess..." The open was something like..."lets all open our hymnals...you'll find them on the back of the seat in front of you...and turn to page..."

HTML line breaks added. --JoeClone, 28-Mar-02.

...that record was one of the treasure of my youth....(we have had threads on this before, but I can't get the SuperSearch to do anything right now) but Lyle has done a VERY good job of describing it)

I was about to struggle with the supersearch myself, when I remembered that there is a shortcut to it http://www.mudcat.org/@NewSSResults.cfm which works even if the one on the front page does not.

I also looked at Lyle's info and saw that it was what I posted back a couple of years ago. So he may not remember where he got it, but he certainly has a better filing system than I do. Once I write something, it is effectively lost!

Dale Rose - Sorry I couldn't give you credit! But when I saw your post (whenever it was!) I knew it was too good to let it get away, so I copied it and put it in a file. Somehow in doing that, I left your name off - but it has been added now.

I couldn't get into super search either.

Lyle

Apparently everyone overlooked Tenbears' other request for "Bloop-Bleep." I was unable to find the lyrics, but I did learn that this song, which was recorded by Danny Kaye, Woody Herman and others, was actually written by Frank Loesser.

Just read the thread. No one mentioned that "It's in the Book" was a spoof on fundamentalist preaching, a-la Jerry Falwell. My liberal, yet church going parents, got hold of the record and I remember them smiling slyly as they listened. I, around age 12, sort of got it, played the thing over and over. It was all in the delivery: "little bo peep, (pause) waas, (pause) a little girl. ... and doesn't know wh-air (Billy Graham style) to find them." The song about Grandma's lye soap? It's a spoof on revivalist hymns. The hand clapping on the chorus was the icing on the cake. Me? I'm a sunday-school teaching Lutheran these days. But thankfully, long ago Johnny Standly alerted me to phony-baloney preaching.

It always amazes me what can be found in Google. A lot of the stuff is under copyright. I worry that these sites will be lost if the big guys continue to eat up the small ones and enforce their "rights."

"Big Hits of the 50's," cd available from Amazon, has "It's in the Book," including "Grandma's Lye Soap," $10.98. I think EMI-Capitol.

Here are lyrics to "Bloop, Bleep" (written by Danny Kaye, according to this site:

Bloop Bleep
by Danny Kaye

Bloop, bleep, bloop, bleep, bloop, bleep
The faucet keeps a-drippin' and I can't sleep
Bleep, bloop, bleep, bloop, bloopbloop, bleep
I guess I never should've ordered clam soup

Bloop, bleep, bloopbloop, bleepbleep, bl.bl.bl, bl.bl.bl
I wonder where to go to buy a car cheap
(Warbling) Blblblblblbl (x 6)
What is it with the babe next door

What is it she does to me
What mad kinda thrill do I find
Looking at her walking, just walking by
Don't know I'm alive but she's driving me out of my..
Bleeoo, bleep, bloop, bleeep, bl.bl.bl.bl, bl.bl.bl.bl
The faucet keeps a-drippin' and I just can't sleep

(Childish crying) Bloop, bleep, bloop, bleep, bloop, bleep
I better call the plumber 'cause I just can't
Sloop, er blee, sleebleep, blooblee er sleeboo, bl.bl, blooslee, sleebloo…er
Sleeeeeeeeeeeep!

BLOOP BLEEP was written by Frank Loesser. It's been recorded by Woody Herman, Harry James, Danny Kaye, Frank Loesser, and Gary McFarland.

I've found, by lots of experience searching for lyrics on the Internet, that when you read "[song x] by [person y]" you can't assume that "by" means "written by." Likely as not it means "recorded by."
