I have the CD and lyrics, but I can't figure out the guitar chords & accompaniment for Grandma's Song by Gail Davies. It is done superbly by Cathy Barton, Dave Para, and Ed Trickett on Folk Legacy's "For All the Good People - A Golden Ring Reunion" CD. I'd love to add this song to my rep. Can any one help me by providing the chords, music, or tab for this lovely song? Thanks.

May I refresh?
Gee! I didn't mean to ask a difficult question! I assumed that since I like this song, and it is a great song, and it is done by fine folk singers, and it is on a Folk Legacy classic, that the music would be on the tips of many mudcatter's fingers.
Back in Feb '97, there was a thread seeking info about a song that sounded similar to this song, but the caller's question was never answered. How strange? It is a very haunting song, but not haunting enough to scare good people away.
For further info, it starts with, "All along the old back road, people stop and they talk at her garden gate. While in the house the family cried, because the old woman had passed away". Other excerpts include: "... a lovely lady and a gentle old soul. And she taught me to sing an old folk song, its got a melody of a hundred years ago. And she sang come-a-hoot, come-a-hoot, come-a-hollow, come down the merry string. I remember it." And, "Oklahoma in the summertime, in her rocking chair singing there on the porch, while the hounds are barking through the hot black night and that old fox, well he's a-running like he never ever run before."
I'd truly appreciate some help on this. Thanks.

Maybe this is the same song I have been looking fo. I was told it was recorded by Glen Yarlbourough of the Limelighters.

Sorry, I didn't mean to bold face part of my last post.
richardw: Back in the good ole days, I had quite a collection of Limelighter albums. I don't remember Grandma's Song, but perhaps Glen Y did it on one of his many single albums. According to the Folk Legacy CD notes, Gail Davies wrote the song in 1980.
Another correction to my previous post. ".....come-a-hollow..", should be ....Come-a-hi-lo.."

Hi folk1234, just a suggestion - if you record this song using Real Producer (there is a current thread on this) you could then email it to a volunteer here, who could then do the music notation or chords for you. I'll be away for a week but will gladly give it a try for you upon my return. I'm sure that you'll get plenty of other offres in the meantime.

Suggest that you also submit the entire lyrics here in this thread so that we can all enjoy them.

Regards, johninbrisbane@hotbot.com

Subject: Lyr Add: GRANDMA'S SONG (Gail Davies)

Thanks John in B. I appreciate your suggestion, but it seems to complex. I don't have a sound recording software package; nor do I have Real audio, or Cute FTP, or any of the "tools" people use to record, compose, and send music. But for your info here are the complete lyrics:
GRANDMA'S SONG
Gail Davies, 1980

All along the old back road, people stop and they talk at her garden gate.

While inside the family cried all throughout the night,

Because the old woman had passed away.

I loved her so; I knew she was a special one,

A lovely lady and a gentle old soul.

And she taught me to sing an old folk song,

It's got a melody of a 100 years ago.

And she sang "Come-a-hoot, come-a-hoot,
come-a-hi-lo,

Come down the merry string."

I remember it.

Those memories have given me so much;
she wore her age so gracefully.

And there was not a living thing she did not love,

And I pray there's a little of her in me.

Oklahoma in the summer time,

In her rocking chair, she's singing there on the porch.

While the hounds are barking through the hot, black night,

And that old fox well he's a-running like he never has run before.

When you hear the melody, when I play my song,

Every note you hear from me, she's singing right along.

And she sang …………..
(repeat 1st verse.)

Cathy, Dave, and Ed go right into "The Fox" as wonderful medley.

OK - I found another, and I expect this is NOT the one you were looking for, but it is a fun tune none-the-less, if you enjoy a tastes of Steve Martin silliness - so here goes: Grandma's Song by Steve Martin

Be courteous kind and forgiving,
Be gentle and peace full each day.
Be warm and human and grateful,
and have a nice thing to say.

Be thoughtful and trustful and childlike,
Be witty and happy and wish.
Be honest and love all your neighbors,
Be obsequious, purple and clairvoyant.

Be pompous obese and eat cactus,
Be dull and boring and omnipresent.
Criticize things you don't know about,
be oblong and have your knees removed.

Be tasteless rude and offensive,
Live in a swamp and be three dimensional.
Put a live chicken in your under pants,
Get all excited and go to a yawning festival.

alternative last line "Go into a closet and suck eggs"

Well Jed, its a far cry from Grandma's Song, but is sounds like a fun song. Maybe a campfire, 4-H, or scouting song.
Thanks
