And there's no need to worry about being immodest or forward -- there are plenty of 'Catters well-qualified to deflate egos! Seriously, folks 'round here don't treat you mean, by and large. It helps to have a sense of humour!

Happy 'catting,
Steve

Well, Luke, you did ask... :0)

That MMario will find plenty to occupy you. Hope to see you around the threads.

But even when the initial post is clearly a case of "some dim-bulb starts a thread that's an obvious cheap excuse to start a fight" - it's possible for this to turn into useful exchange of views and information, if people responding can ignore the insults, and deal with the issues in a more sensible way. For example this recent one

One useful thing is to delve around in the archives, using the search engine. You might find there's some sonmg search which petered out where you just might have a clue to takem it further; or a perennial BS type discussion where you have some distinct and different perspective.

What can you do? Well, now, if you have a question, ask. If you've always wondered about some bit of folklore, or can't quite remember something about a song, ask. That's what keeps the Mudcat rolling.
Then, if you know an answer, post it. If you remember where you got the answer, whether it's from your grandmother or from a book, so much the better, but don't let the lack of a source stop you.
If you have an opinion you want to share, do it politely. I had to put that in, it's a "Mom thing". Seriously, there is very little invective or flaming around here, and the discussions where folk disagree politely give everybody things to think about. (Now for my little prejudice) When some dim-bulb starts a thread that's an obvious cheap excuse to start a fight, Pleaseplease don't put an answer on. Even posting to tell them they're out of line just keeps the thing going.
I know these can be tougher some days than others, but they're the most important things you can do.

Luke - if you follow the links in the "go away and leave me" thread, you will get to the Lester Levy Sheet Music Archive. An incredible place...and the sheet music is there. I like myself, you are one of those people for whom written musical notation makes no sense, there are a number of free or very inexpensive musical notation programs available on the internet that will allow you to enter the notation and then hear the music. Most of them also allow you to save the music as a midi or abc file.

Which brings us to "how could I be of service in some way to the likes of you folks" *rubbing hands together* So glad you asked...

Aside from possibly making a small financial contribution to the MudCat or the digital Tradition (see "contact us" above in the quick links) which is up to you of course; you might consider doing some searches yourself. see THIS thread...

Luke, we all feel lucky to have stumbled in here and we all contibute in our own unique way ( mine admittedly, is more useless than unique but I have a good time)...opportunities to contribute crop up all the time and I am sure whatever contribution you make will be valid and valued.

I was just wondering, how is it a regular not very studious sort of lazy feller like myself got so lucky as to have the ear of such great trackers of tunes and folklore. Moreover how could I be of service in some way to the likes of you folks doing all the scratching and searching. It's a matter of equitability.

I was reading the seach for the go away and leave me song and I was moved by the care and direct response and final success.

It wasn't my request but i felt nourished and kinda liked the song as well.

Is there a tune?

Lotsa words to say thanks I guess

Luke
