"We all sing Halleluia at the turning of the year" is the only bit of the chorus I can remember. Electric Folk? Anyone recognise the song or the band? Please email me at richardpaulthomas@hotmail.com if you know this song. I have been looking for it for about ten years now!!

The song is "We Sing Halleljah" by Richard Thompson. It's on the 'I want to see the bright lights tonight' album.

You can find the lyrics (and chords) here

Richard,

Sorry if I come over as a total curmudgeon. The fact is that a while back I'd spend ages finding stuff for people and sending it by email, never to get a reply.

I'm happier posting stuff here because it may help people other than the original poster.

Ed

Having said that, I've still not replied to a catter who emailed me some software I requested a few days ago (sorry Bernard, email thank you on it's way!)

dog sh*t, Liz? my French is not so good, so what version of this would that be?
Some friends of mine wrote an upbeat version of this that ignorant folks like me like better than Richard Thompson's stone cold bummer verses, and All True Richard Thompson fans despise wholeheartedly. I could post it if people want to continue the war, and I do have the tune around here someplace if you want that.
Blessings,
Barbara

That's shit hot, Barbara. Does it mean the same in the US? This side of the pond it's high praise indeed.

Thanks Zebedee. We have the Bright lights album but no words and it is so much easier to find them on your clicky than sit and write them line by line! You're right much better to post than e-mail them I can benefit too.
xx

There's a very fine version of this on the Home Service CD of "The Mysteries". On the Fledg'ling label IIRC.

Subject: Lyr Add: WE SING HALLELUJAH (Richard Thompson)
From: Noreen
Date: 06 Dec 00 - 10:59 AM

Included for completeness (thanks, Ed)

WE SING HALLELUJAH
By Richard Thompson
From the album "I want to see the bright lights tonight"

Transcribed by Phil Saunders

A man is like a rusty wheel
On a rusty cart
He sings his song as he rattles along
and then he falls apart.

CHORUS

And We'll sing hallelujah
At the turning of the year
And we work all day in the old fashioned way
'Til the shining star appears

A man is like a briar
He covers himself with thorns
he laughs like a clown when his fortunes are down
And his clothes are ragged and torn

CHORUS

A man is like a three string fiddle
Hanging on the wall.
He plays when somebody scrapes on the bow
Or he can't play at all.

CHORUS

A man is like his father
Wishes he'd never been born.
He longs for the time when the clock bell will chime
And he's dead for evermore.

CHORUS

Noreen

Animaterra posted this in a "Healing Song Circle" thread, and said it was a shapenote song. I was going to correct her and say it was a Richard Thompson song - but of course she was right. It's not exactly the same, but did Thompson base his song on the shapenote song?

How about a little shapenote?

And I'll sing Halleluia,
And you'll sing Halleluia,
And we'll all sing Halleluia
When we arrive at home.

Is the version Noreen posted 12 years ago the version Full House* sing. I know the chorus is the same, but I've never been able to make out the rest.
Strangely I've just been reading this thread
