The fried chicken head the lady got from McDonalds has caused me to wonder; do any of us catters eat strange foods? Actually, here in Mississippi, there is a delicacy many of us enjoy which turns the stomach of many others. Pork brains scrambled with eggs. MMMM-MMMM GOOD! Of course, chitlins (chitterlings) are enjoyed by many; however, I find them repugnant, especially the odor during cooking. I am sure Mudcat houses many Vegans who think that we carnivores are heathens, and I fully understand. But I will enjoy my meat as long as I can. How about it? any of you admit to dining on "gross" foods? khandu |

My family shudders, but it's really quite good. Just don't think about what's in it. I've never been squeamish (I'm always the one who gets summoned to chop the feet off the turkey, remove the giblets, saw the 12 lb. roast in half, etc... I'm a farm girl. It's dead.) but I must say that I regard tripe (have you looked at that stuff?), eyeballs, and feet, (oh, and heads) aren't food. Nope. I'd boil the feet and heads, though. Broth. -J |

Scrumptious! Sardines and grits is good too. Deep-fat fried 'gator tail is pretty good. A little "chewy" though and pickled pigs feet can really hit the spot with a schooner of Lager after a long hot day. But you'll usually only find them in a working mans tavern. These fancy, upscale places that pretend to be real taverns sell fried cheese sticks and nachos. troll |

Donbalon, which is barbecued sheep balls. I tasted tripe when I was in France but didn't like it, it tasted as though it wasn't cleaned properly. I tried it again when someone foisted some Menudo on me in Southern Colorado; it tasted pretty much the same. Haggis is little more than a sausage with LOTS of oatmeal in it. Well at least the one I tasted was. When I was a kid it took me a long time to pluck up the courage to eat blue cheese, but now I love the stuff. |

Have eaten a lot of game since moving to Canada, but the very best meat I have ever tasted is black bear, it is far superior to regular steak any day of the week. In the summer We usually have barbeques for the family and friends, with Bambi burgers and yogi steaks, we also have the regular steak and hot dogs and burgers for the uninitiated. While travelling in the southern states I even tried grits ONCE! |

Willing to give it another try... I've eaten a clam chowder that had sea cucumber in it, but I couldn't have told you which bits were clams, and which were sea cucumbers. I don't particularly care for the taste of venison. Abalone is too rubbery for my taste, as is tripe. I've never had brains but I'm told it's very good. Organ meats in general I find distasteful. I used to like oysters a lot more until I ate a huge one, raw, on a beach on South Pender (or is it Pinder?) Island, B.C. Haven't cared for them much since. I had alligator once, but it had squishy bits (I imagine it was the fat?) that I found disgusting. But the non-squishy bits were okay (nothing to shout about). In general I'm willing to try just about anything (if it seems safe --i.e. disease-free). Alex |

Hey, all it is is meatloaf made with oatmeal instead of bread crumbs. Add pickled pigs feet and hog hocks to my likes, as well as stuffed beef heart, sushi, and eels in any form except jellied. (Prefer smoked.) I like tripe, too. (My husband thinks I'm nuts) And liver and onions (especially in bacon fat). Oh, yeah, kimchee, too. They serve big, yummy, greasy breakfasts that always include black and white pudding. The first morning I woke up not feeling "gentle", having behaved myself the night before, I was ready to try the puddings (puddings being such lovely things here in the U.S.) when my host launched into a truly graphic tale of how black pudding gets its flavor; it involved a lot of urine and blood and I won't get more specific for the sake of you readers. I suspect he was partly joking, but that thaere was a kernel of truth in there (it is made with blood, is it not?). He finished his story and with an evil grin, popped a black pudding in his mouth and suddenly I was feeling "gentle" all over again. I never did try them. |

The juice that oozes out of the meat you buy at the supermarket is not blood, which you can verify by comparing it to your own blood next time you cut yourself: the juice is clear; mammal blood is opaque. If the only octopus you've ever had is rubbery, you've had the bad stuff. I've had octopus that melted in my mouth. Partly it's the part of the beast you fix (the tentacles will ALWAYS be rubbery; the head meat is much tenderer) and how you fix it (the best octopus I've ever had was in a stew, which was presumably cooked a good, long time). (It was at a Greek restaurant in Chicago, by the way.) Alex |

(Just do a net search on "Haggis", that's how we found it.) Unfortunately, we nearly poisoned his girlfriend with it. It contained ground nuts, and she is one of those people with a deadly nut allergy, and for some reason did't inquire about ingredients before taking a big bite. We fed her a lot of Benadryl and she survived, but I've been leaving the nuts out ever since. The veggie version is very tasty. I tried black pudding. Once. Tastes like blood. |

Especially Greek style, rings dipped in seasoned flour and fried in olive oil. Served with retsina and a big salad. But marinated in a salad or stewed in its own ink is good, too. As an aside, I also have the largest collection of rubber squid in the state of New Hampshire. Actually, it may be the ONLY collection of rubber squid in the state of New Hampshire. I don't remember what it was called in Korean, but the English description read 'Cuttlefish Casserole,' which sounded interesting. I ordered it, and the waitress asked if I'd like the 'mild' version, as it is a very spicy dish. I chuckled and said something about how I'm sure I could handle it. They brought me out a platter of something that looked like what I imagine shark vomit to look like, with cute little tentacles poking out, which didn't really bother me. But it was REALLY spicy. Unpleasantly, painfully spicy. My eyes teared up and my mouth was on fire, but I choked down the whole mess it was a very large platter...). Let's hope the mad cow virus doesn't just the pond or there's one dish that's out the window. |

The trick with tofu is to cook it up with something else so it will absorb the flavors. It's a good source of protein for people who don't eat meat. The only people who eat a similar quantity of disgusting meat who AREN'T Chinese or Pygmies are us purulent whiteys who came from the Isles. The first time I ate black pudding was two months ago in some breakfasteria in Dublin. Nobody was impolite enough to stare at me staring down the pud on my fork for five minutes straight. I shoved the whole slice into my mouth. I never ate a gross meat product that was so rich and tasty. I promptly went up and got three more and dipped them in my egg yolks. But I swear I will never eat souse again. THAT was some gross stuff. I could see the cross sections of snout and intestine suspended in this foul and sour gel...I tried it, I yakked. Never again. |

I've eaten something called Violet in French, which I think are a type of barnacle, but I can't find a dictionary translation (my theory being that nobody anglophone would eat these things anyway). When I tried pigeon soup and it came with a little half (sliced sagitally) pigeon head in it, I just took the head out and put it where I couldn't see it anymore and kept eating. I like to suck shrimp heads and crawdad heads - and I too like that green stuff inside lobsters. Don't like tofu one bit; do like tempe. Like sushi, like raw beef (and I still do pick at it, I can't help it, someday my e. coli will revolt). When in North Africa, failed to try sheep's or goat's eyes... and still cannot stand ANYTHING that tastes of liquorice. If that's how it's spelled. |

(I © SUSHI is the name of a pretty good sushi place with Seattle and Bellevue locations.) But for financial reasons I prefer The Eating Factory in Bellevue, with all-you-can-eat sushi (and other Japanese food) at lunch for twelve buck$ ($eventeen at suppertime), try to hit it every payday. Because in a normal sushi place I have no difficulty eating a hundred dollars' worth at a sitting. Eel is good (both anago and unagi) but my favorite is amaebi, large raw sweet shrimp with the head deep-fried on the side. (The Eating Factory doesn't do amaebi, alackaday; for that I have to go to Tommy's or "I © Sushi" or someplace.) I like the Korean rendition of the Italian pronunciation of your name, too, Kimchi (serious hot pickled "Chinese" cabbage). Liland |

Can't find whale hereabouts in the markets, though I suppose if I went out and hung around in Neah Bay I might score some. A sushi variety that I am not particularly fond of (though many swear by it, and if the guy behind the counter brags about it I'll try one to be polite) is uni, i.e. sea urchin. Raw scallop temaki (handroll sushi) on the other hand, while slippery-slimy, is good (if the scallop's fresh and cold and it's artfully wrapped). Somebody mentioned raw eggs. In Japan a favorite breakfast was a steaming bowl of rice with a raw egg cracked over it and stirred in, then eaten in an ad hoc makizushi style with nori (seaweed sheets) dipped in soy sauce. Chicken wings are new on the menu at McD's. Just saw them the other day when I picked up a yummy sausage biskit for breakfast. But I say, what's the big deal? Just throw the head away and go on. A chicken's head isn't going to kill anyone. Yeah, it's a little disgusting, but so what. I have three pets, and long hair, and am always finding it in my food. What am I going to do, sue myself for trauma? Right. I once had a fly in my hashbrown wrapper from a fast-food place - I guess he had fallen into the fryer. Big woop. He was dead. I threw him out the window. And I didn't die from eating the taters either. Besides that, you know that Chicken McNuggets, being pieces parts and all that, probably has beaks & eyeballs in 'em anyhow. Some people are just too picky about their food. :) I haven't ever eaten brains or tongue. Would probably be willing to try it, though. I did get some chorizo from the grocery a few weeks ago, and you should have seen the ingredient list on that package. Dis-GUSting. Let's make the sausage scrapings into more sausage. I put it in a pot of chili and it was damn tasty. |

Ya' know what's really pathetic? I like almost everything mentioned here and I've tried most of it. So many foods, so little time! One of the nicest things about having this prize winning butcher shop in the little town where I live is that Karen and I still eat a lot of raw or rare cooked burger. They make fantastic jerky there and the trail bologna is heaven. He also gets me my scrapple fix from my favorite maker because he knows the guy and Martin will drop off some at Kenny's every time he's in the area. NEver had cat or dog to my knowledge though......and where's the link to the "Cat's in the kettle at the Peking Moon?" Spaw |

I love the taste of raw shrimp, but don't like the texture so I give it a miss. I was lucky enough once to have scallops so fresh I could eat the whole scallop instead of just the aductor muscle. I also like moon snails (just the foot -- is more tender if you freeze them first) and periwinkles (in fritters -- clean up the operculums all over the kitchen later) as well as conventional snails drenched in too much garlic. (Is there such a thing?) Actually, I like most strong flavored foods including limberger cheese. A lot of the sushi and maki I make is a vehicle for pickled plums, pickled ginger and wasabi. But firstly, it's not cake it's bread, and secondly, the lard is spread on it BEFORE it's cooked so it gets this nice crispy crust on it. Like a really fresh doughnut but better. Cholesterol? Mmmmmm yes, but sometimes things are worth it. You have to have 'some' cholesterol in your diet and there is no better way of getting it. Cut out hamburgers for a while. Bert. |

Take 2 Krispy Kreme (the softer raised kind, not the cakey kind) doughnuts, fry in butter, stack and top with vanilla ice cream. You get salty (from the butter) and sweet (from the rest), hot and cold, and it is just wonderful. Most people gross out on the description, though! |

I raise my own so I know it is safe, BUT if you absolutely must, and cannot be sure of what you get, buy a chuck roast (it tastes best) and cut off the very outside and chop up the rest.
