I'm looking for songs/lyrics/more information about Wilmouth? Houdini, a calypso singer and bandleader from Trinidad active in the thirties and forties. I believe that he wrote "FDR in Trinidad" covered by Ry Cooder, but also wrote great topical songs about everything Britsh and American of the era. I think that he also wrote "Stone Cold Dead in the Market" that was recorded in the U.S. by Louis Jordan and Ella Fitzgerald sometime in the forties. Anyone got a clue? Thanks Seth from China

I have the Arhoolie/Folk Lyric album (Arhoolie/Folk Lyric CD-7010). It is a reissue of a 1984 Flyright LP - FL 9040 - with extra tracks. It has a 6-page booklet with notes by John Cowley on Houdini and the songs.

Oops, that should have read 'Folklyric' LP in my previous posting, not 'Flyright' which is an English label.

Seth, I forgot to mention that you can learn more than you probably want to know about calypso from Ray Funk's 'Kaiso Newsletters' which are currently available on the Rod Stradling's 'Musical Traditions' site - a great site!

Cheers, Stewie.
