From time to time I get caught in the trap of "an object at rest will remain at rest until an outside force acts upon it".

One thing I've noticed can help is doing something I've put off for a while--even if it's just cleaning a shelf or picking up some papers.

Also, just interaction regarding things I'm interested in--phone calls, etc, can help.

Any other experiences to share?

Thanks Mudcatters, MA

You & me both, MA- but it can take me half an hour to think about how I'm going to do it, look at the papers, imagine sorting them or putting them in the bin... but it does feel good when it's done...

Matt, gravity always wins in the end, but it's the struggle that counts.

I have a close personal relationship with intertia. Sometimes I really enjoy being inert. Other times when I need to get moving I'll do ANYTHING just to get going - pretty much what MichaelAnthony does.

I had a mini-survival course when I was in the Air Force. (Very "mini") One of the things that kills people in close-to-death situations is they can just give into fatalism\fear\depression and give up. The antidote is to just do something. To get moving, you have to start.

Panic can be a healthy reaction sometimes. We react and run around doing all sorts of things, but some of them might be the right things.

...try doing something for someone else if you can't do things you should do for yourself...(Oh shit, I promised myself I wouldn't give half-assed unsolicited advice...my paid advice is much better)

Harpgirl,

Been doing that...and I've always heard that. Still not sure if its true for me--but at least I'm useful to someone!

Thanks for your post.

...191's approach is like "maitri"...practicing loving-kindness with ourselves...so, inertia is okay because movement will come...it is inevitable...

I'm working on working. I swear. I'm just being intimidated by my source texts. No more mediaeval for at least a semester.

Fresh air you say? Little Clementines are wonderful work food.

I'll focus on the inertia issue after I've done something about this accelerated entropy I'm dealing with. Anyone got any tips on that?

Lists, make lists, of any simple thing you want to get done that day, then take pleasure in crossing them off once they are done.

When I was in sales, working on commission, we had to fill out a daily "call" sheet, noting appts. etc., then turn them in at the end of the day. At the top it said, "Plan Your Day - Work Your Plan." I don't have to live as ordered a life as that now, but it still helps to list things as I noted.

Good luck,

kat

Nothing like making lists to keep you from working. Also reading books about dealing with procrastination. Or starting threads about inertia....

Schedule something which forces action. For instance, our house is usually pretty messy, but then we schedule occasional dinner guests or parties, and then we HAVE to get to work and clean the place up! Or when I was in a slump musically, I agreed to do a concert at the local bookstore, and then I HAD to practice and show up and play!

Good luck!

Alex

Be very careful what you ask for MA! Honey and I finally got time to be inert after weeks of 'something to get done'. We inerted ourselves into oblivion yesterday. All we did ALL DAY was sit on our large couch in front of TV, fireplace, beautiful, beautiful river. We were warm, entertained, saw diving ducks, 5 swans (a mom, a dad, and 3 youngsters), a beautiful sunset. Saturday we had an RNR jam session (including a live lady doing JJ's Bobby Magee). Inert can be good.

Love, annamill
