The "gurman.org" link no longer works; anybody know where the scads of lyrics for the Ash Grove went?

I just posted the Esperanto version, Nun ĉio vivanta, in TTT-Himnaro Cigneta, and now you tell me I got the name wrong? ;-)

So who has the copyright on it? And who do they say the author is? And if it's "The Lutherans" can you be more specific (ELCA? Mo. Synod? Wis. Synod? Augsburg Fortress? etc.) The only hymnal I've found that credits the Lutherans (Chalice Hymnal, Disciples of Christ, 1995) still says Davis is the author. And the Esperanto translator, Adolf Burkhardt, is a (German) Lutheran pastor, and he says it's public domain and credits Davis.

Umm. Joe, looks like you might be a little out of practice on the HTML. Maybe you can get joeclone to fix it?

About the time the new Lutheran Hymnal came out, I was told about the tracing of the author of this work.

I found this as the title page from 1939: Let all things now living : four-part chorus, with descant, for mixed voices : traditional Welsh melody / Harmonization and descant by Katherine K. Davis ; [words by] John Cowley.

The Lutherans were trying to very thorough & checked with Davis to get help in locating the original author. Presumably this was to get copyright permissions. She fessed up.

From records in OCLC that I'm looking at, it looks like she did something similar on the Little Drummer Boy. Carol of the drum / Katherine K. Davis ; Czech carol freely transcribed by C.R.W. Robertson. Notes: Later known as The little drummer boy. C.R.W. Robertson was a Davis pseudonym.

Well, this site (click) says, "This hymn was first published under the pseudonym of John Cowley in 1939. Katherine Davis wrote it in the 1920s for the tune 'The Ash Grove.'"

Let all things now living
A song of thanksgiving
To God the creator
Triumphantly raise.
Who fashioned and made us,
Protected and stayed us,
Who still guides us on
To the end of our days.
God's banners are o'er us,
His light goes before us,
A pillar of fire
Shining forth in the night.
'Til shadows have vanished
And darkness is banished
As forward we travel
From light into light.
His law he enforces,
The stars in their courses
And sun in its orbit
Obediently shine;
The hills and the mountains,
The rivers and fountains,
The deeps of the ocean
Proclaim him divine.
We too should be voicing
Our love and rejoicing;
With glad adoration
A song let us raise
Till all things now living
Unite in thanksgiving:
"To God in the highest,
Hosanna and praise!"
