Subject: 1968 Fender 12string - $$$??
From: Musicman

I have a friend who has a 1968 Fender 12 string acoustic 'Village'(?) model. They are wanting to sell, but have no idea on the value. I have check on the internet and can't seem to find any pertinant information.
Any Ideas? The guitar is in excellent shape, and comes with a hard shell case..

I have heard Fender acoustic were not that great and may not be worth alot.

thanks

musicman

Let's have more. Any serial numbers? Inlay work? Give all the details, and will ask the local expert/fanatic what he thinks. Is pretty good at values, has been collecting for the last 40 years.

I'll be interested to hear this because I have a Fender 12-string from around that time also. It was left to me from my late first wife and needs a neck reset. I won't be selling it because of sentimental reasons, but I'm curious about the value.

Just found this string and what a surprise. I may have built the thing. I worked at the Fender shop in '68 for a short while. If my memory serves me correctly, all were inlaid simply. We used a bundle to inlay. The guitars also had spruce lining and large sounding blocks. They were heavy, but quite nice. Most were mahogany with spruce tops, but some were rosewood. I even had one.

I just checked the one I've got. It has the number 1810 1079 (separated just like that) burned into the inside of the back. It has a trapeze tailpiece, the pickguard is screwed into the top and the headstock is covered with matching material. Anything I can learn about this guitar will be appreciated.

The American Fender acoustics were good - particularly the Shenandoah 12 string and Palamino 6 string.

However, in the early 1970's, a factory in Japan started producing 'Fender' acoustics under licence, and they weren't fit for firewood. I think that was during the CBS era...

There must be more information on the Web somewhere; if I wasn't feeling so apathetic I'd have a look... so I'll wait until someone else does it!

Oh - I forgot to mention... the Shenandoah and Palamino were quite distinctive in appearance, as they had the same 'scroll' style of headstock as the solid body electrics. Looked a little incongruous on an acoustic, though!

The one I have has a more traditional acoustic headstock, so apparently it's not a Shenandoah or Palomino.

A Fender salesman told me (around 1975) that they had ceased manufacturing in the US because the place in California was very cold at night - the temperature changes from day to night were causing movements and splits in the wood which made quality control very difficult.I remember seeing some pictures in 60s catalogues which seemed to show that they were making them on the beach!

Wow, more Fender Villager 12 string owners! Bought mine, used, in 1973, serial # 329085. Body is a little scratched, kept it tuned down to D, sounds like heaven and I wouldn't part with it for anything.

Okay, better late than never. On the Villager, local expert guessed that it was probably rosewood, definitely a spruce top, and a nice intermediate level instrument. According to what shape it is in, value would be no less than 450.00, and might exceed 650.00. Sorry it took me so long, he hasn't been in town as regular as in the past.

Seems like they are going for around the same as the reissue. I went through 3 of them in high school because the body would cave in then they put a metal rod inside which made it neck heavy. Last time seen it was a clock.
