Subject: Soldier Boy by Sarah Vaughn From: GUEST Date: 05 Dec 00 - 06:15 PM I've been looking a couple of days, but all I can find is The Shirelles version, the Elvis cover, and a bunch of punk-style remakes. This version would be older than The Shirelles. My godmother remembers it from the '50s on jukeboxes. Some sample lyrics were "it was written in the blues that I was meant for you" or something to that effect. She gave me more lyrics, but I just knew it would show up right away. :-\ And it's supposed to be a "beautiful" song, you know, more bluesy/jazzy than rock-n-rolly; soft, basically. Honestly, I can find no proof that this song exists, but she was pretty adamant about it. If anybody has any ideas about a song that might match the criteria I would appreciate them. Thanks. Criteria: 1) performed by Sarah Vaughn (or Vaughan, whatever) 2) something to do with soldiers/war/etc (I assume) 3) played in the 1950's (on jukeboxes at least) 4) lyrics include something to the effect of "...written in the blues...I was meant for you..." 5) soft, slow style (possibly) |

Subject: Soldier Boy by Sarah Vaughan From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Dec 00 - 05:01 PM I looked and looked for this one, and didn't come up with anything. I checked most of the discography at this Sarah Vaughan Site (click), and had no luck. The only thing that comes up is the Shirelles song, and I didn't find a Vaughan recording of it. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Soldier Boy by Sarah Vaughn From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 07 Dec 00 - 04:26 AM If it really is by the Divine Sarah I can't believe it's the same song as the Shirelles one, which I do remember. It doesn't sound like SV's sort of thing. I've not got anything by SV that sounds as if it could be this. If it isn't in Joe's song books it probably doesn't exist! RtS |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Soldier Boy by Sarah Vaughn From: LR Mole Date: 07 Dec 00 - 08:59 AM Oh, it does, too. Elvis covered it (or did it first for all I know) on "Elvis is Back", the first thing he cut after coming out of the service. Also "Fever", which we associate with Peggy Lee. I believe the Jordanaires sang backup. Some good blues on there,as well. The Colonel must have been out of town. (This may be more helpful than my first suggestion, which was, "Soldier Boy by Sara Vaughan, doo-dah, doo-dah...") |

Subject: Lyr Add: SOLDIER BOY (Jones/Williams) From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Dec 00 - 05:19 PM Elvis recorded it? Why didn't you say so? I found the lyrics at The Elvex Pages -Joe Offer-
Soldier Boy
(Words & music by David P. Jones - Theodore Williams, Jr.)
Soldier boy why feel blue
Soldier boy tell me why do you cry
So prove your love is true
While you're gone oh try to believe
So prove your love is true
While you're gone oh try to believe |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Soldier Boy by Sarah Vaughn From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Dec 00 - 05:21 PM Well, the original post says the Elvis cover is not the song, but it sure seems to fit the other criteria. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Soldier Boy by Sarah Vaughn From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Jan 11 - 04:23 PM Turns out, it was Ella Fitzgerald, not Sarah Vaughan, that sang this song called SOLDIER BOY (Jones/Williams). It's on her album "1954-1955." From a sample: ...I'll rush to your side It's written in the blue That I was meant for only you So prove your love is true I'll be there... [Elvis' version must have changed some of the words for gender reasons.] |
