Subject: BALULALOW From: UB Ed Date: 07 Dec 00 - 10:40 AM In collecting seasonal songs for the next couple weeks, I stumbled over Balulalow in the database. This would be perfect for our venue, but....Does anybody have the tune and/or chords? I have searched for a midi but to no avail. Interestingly enough I found the song is a carol (#181 in the ``Oxford Book of Carols'') which was published by the Wedderburn brothers - 16th Century Scottish poets - under the title Ane song of the Birth of Christ (``I come from Heaven to tell'') in their ``Ane Compendious Buik of Godly and Spiritualt Sangis'' in 1567. It is a translation of Luther's Christmas Eve carol Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her, first published in 1535 in ``Geistliche Lieder''. Mooch Thanks! In the meantime, I'll try to find the Oxford Carols... |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: BALULALOW From: UB Ed Date: 07 Dec 00 - 12:03 PM Patrish: Interesting. Another friend of mine provided this link http://www.rememberjosie.org/carols/s1046d.asp to Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her. I may be missing something here, but the tunes sound distinctly different. Regardless, I'm still trying to match the lyrics from the database to both tunes. MMArio, its with great embarassment I admit to being unable to find alan's midi page... My thanks to both of you for your help! |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: BALULALOW From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 07 Dec 00 - 12:23 PM Alan's page isn't easy to find; there's a little box at the top of each thread-page (and on the main Forum Page) called "Quick Links", which contains a drop-down menu: Mudcat Midis is second from the bottom. Over the last year or so it's become an increasingly valuable resource, containing midis for songs posted to the Forum, and, more recently, for songs in the DT that have no tunes attached. There's a good argument, I think, for displaying the link much more prominently. Malcolm |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: BALULALOW From: UB Ed Date: 07 Dec 00 - 12:53 PM Malcolm, thanks for the hint. That is a great source. I'm still thinking I'm looking at two different tunes here. Maybe I should stick with Grandma Got Run Over... |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: BALULALOW From: rabbitrunning Date: 07 Dec 00 - 07:30 PM Well, it's on a CD out this year called "A Celtic Christmas" done by the O'Reilly Consort. It's a pretty nice album, but the order the songs are credited on the paperwork has little or nothing to do with the order in which they actually come on the CD. So it may or may not help. There's a website: www.platinumcd.com on the insert. Good luck. |
