Musicians and Others! Need some cash? How about an extra $500 to $1,500 a month without affecting what you are doing now? Maybe you are searching for a way to earn a good living so you can concentrate on playing MUSIC, and you don't want to be tied down to a day job workin' for some stinkin' boss? YOU need to take a SERIOUS look at what I'm doing. YOU could earn up to $5,000 or more a month working only part time. I know, 'cause I've taught bunches of people to do it, and I've been doing it for years. You can even earn money while you are out "on the road" playing gigs. Cooll? This is a legitimate business now open in 49 countries. Check it out: www.geocities.com/donburkemindspringcom

How come these spam for "legitimate business opportunities" never actually tell you what the legitimate business DOES?

Well...even though this IS pretty funny on the surface, and I think someone would have to be pretty naieve to get involved in ANY pyramid scheme....especially off the internet, To my shock and horror, two people I knew pretty well, actually did. At different times, both phoned me trying to solicit business. Tricky, if you don't want to end a friendship, but I quickly realized that if you don't give a firm no, they'll keep trying, especially when the desperation sets in.

It's so tempting to say "how could you BE so stupid?"...but I guess not everyone is as fascinated by scams and scam artists as I am.

Did buy a blender from a late night info-mercial once though. Naturally, it ceased working in a few weeks 'cause it was made of plastic!

Rick's remarks remind me of a coworker who wangled an invitation to dinner at my home. This was a bit difficult to arrange because we were living nearly seventy miles apart and worked different shifts. Finally the date was set. Only a few days afterward, I learned that he was involved with Amway. On a hunch that he was going to initiate a sales pitch so that he could write off the travel to my home as a business expense, I told him (as nicely as I could): "If you so much as breathe the name, Amway, while at my home, I will throw you out of the house." He never showed up.

When I was in fifth or sixth grade I paid ten cents for an envelope containing information that I could use to make money without working.

IN THE ENVELOPE: "Do not fret (no pun intended) and do not pine ~ get your dime like I got mine."

I made around thirty cents on the scam (sometimes spelled spam) but then the word was getting around.

I remember "Dare To Be Great" back in the early 70's. A couple of days before the crash there were people standing in the the intersections, flaging down cars, trying to recoup a little of their investment. A couple of guys I worked with got taken for $5,000 each and never recovered a dime.
There's an old saying,"You can't con an honest man." Ponzis only work when folks think they can get something for nothing.

One of the "better" schemes of late has been the guy who promises to help you get your money back after being ripped off.......for a nice upfront retainer. Very popular with the elderly who have already lost their savings, so they "invest" another chunk with the nice man who will help them. Helluva' world.

My other sisters, the twins, not Bet, are always calling me to ask my opinion on the scammail they get. I am always amazed at how otherwise very intelligent women are always ready to believe in this crap.

The other day, it was an outfit in Toronto, (I have the addy, Rick, wanna go break a few legs?**bg**), asking my sister for her signature to verify that she is really who her name says she is; for her signature, it sounded as though some benefactor, i.e. like that old show where the millionaire gives out money anonymously, was going to gift her with tons of money.

As she read me the fine print, it came down to, for her signature AND $29.95 or some such amount, she, too, would receive the information which helped the anonmymous benefactor get rich.

I had already told her it was a bunch of crap and I stopped her right there, but I think the promise was for lotto numbers or something. "Well, okay," she said, "but if you check it out on the Internet and find out it's real, call me back!"

What makes it worse in their case is one is going blind and the other has a very hard time with fine print. And, the scammers/scummers are getting better, with every mailing, at making it sound soooo good and legit! I am glad they at least call me and ask my opinion now and thank goodness they've not had a lot of extra to lose.

Dammit you caught me kat! (see, I'm not capitalizing the "k") I was hoping that 29.95 would be in my mail box this morning!

Back a few years ago, shortly after heather and I got hitched, she invited a Mutual Funds (or something like that) salesman to our house. I think someone at work had told her about their neat investments. Well, I'm not just suspicious...I avoid ANY deal where there is an upfront commision involved, but I tried not to let her think I was paranoid (and anti-investment) so I was pleasant when the guy got to our place.

Right off the bat he started using "closer" tricks (and I started enjoying myself) beginning with the "spreading all his material on the floor", with us three feet above him in chairs (giving us the false impression of power). Then he started sticking hideous cards in our faces, adorned with brightly coloured pictures of people vacationing in Florida! Next came cards with pictures of happy couples staring at wads of bills! Then he'd ask us whether we dreamed of "a better life", and produced a PICTURE OF A YACHT!! At that point I was going to ask him, whether I could wear checked pants and a white plastic belt and shoes on my yacht..but didn't.

After about five of these "visual aids" I couldn't hold it in any longer, and started laughing hysterically.....he never dropped a beat. he took ALL the pretty pictures and threw them over his shoulder, got off the floor and took a seat and said gravely "I can tell that you people are more intelligent than most, so let's start talking success and not just dreams"!! I composed myself,(briefly) but I think he knew the jig was up. He used every line from the "Closer's Manual", but I couldn't resist asking him if he liked the movie "Glengarry Glen Ross"....there was a slight pause, and then he (somewhat miffed) collected all his brochures and carboard convincers and without even a "goodnight", stomped off.

Maybe if I'd told him at the beginning, that in my youth I'd sold Encyclopedias door to door, and once lived with a woman (briefly) who scammed people with Freezer Plans, he'd have left before starting his pitch.

I know this sounds like I enjoyed being a "smartass", but in my defence I gotta say, I treat honest folks with a great deal of respect, but if I smell a scam, I can be ruthless. And I DON'T mind wasting their time.

Rick

Correction, Bill D: 27 years in a room with amateur accordian & banjo players, and they are on a diet of Vegemite, sauerkraut, and hardtack.

Last month I got a call from a young man who was "upgrading the security of my credit card"; he was sure I had heard about the dangers of someone getting hold of the numbers- just what would I do if something like that happened?

I let him talk and gave him an encouraging response every now and then just to waste his time, but finally I said, But see, if I had fears about my card I would talk to the company that issued it.

He hung up! I was so hurt that he didn't say goodbye.

Bill, as I get older I realize that I'm no longer "For or against" anything. I'm "Selectively" for and against EVERYTHING!

The guy who ran the "freezer Scam" (people buy a freezer at an inflated price and have sub-par frozen food delivered to them monthly for five years) had compiled a "who's most likely to fall for this" list by race. In other words, who were the stupidest people and what techniques to use on them. I'd have been happy to turn the gas on for he and his ilk. He was so smug about it as well.

My experience selling Encyclopedias lasted two days. My trainer told me that even if I didn't sell any books, I'd get layed at least once a day!! Well, shit, I WAS twenty!

I knew I was a wimp though, 'cause I just couldn't bring myself to scam folks who were already in debt up to their eyeballs. Oh and I DIDN'T get layed in my two days on the job (nor did I sell any books)

After that (it was about my twelfth try at an actual job) I gave up all hope of respectability and became a professional musician. Now that DID help my social life!

Rick

There was a telephone scam going around here some few years back where the caller was selling light bulbs, that he was blind, and this was how some organization or other was training him to make his way in the world of business. Always a male caller, always blind, always light bulbs. One day my grandmother (who suffered from macular degeneration) answered the phone. The guy said, "Hello, I'm blind." My grandmother said, "So am I." Stopped him cold, right there.

Rick, I too, was roped into the Encyclopedia sales routine in my desperate youth, and lasted only two days, no sales, no lays! After two days of no sales, my trainer came along to "show me how it was done", and he chose a block of apartments (in Sydney. Australia, this was!) The guy we first got in to see was, I suspect, rather like you in personality, and he proceded to take my trainer's presentation apart, and make him look like the immoral dork he was. At the end, he turned to me, and said "you take my advice, young man; get out of this, you're too nice a guy to be doing it..." My trainer packed up, and left without a word, and didn't speak all the way back to the office. That was it for me...thank goodness!

My late great old Dad used to sell Britanica (on his way out of the coal mines). One day, as he told it, he had a couple at the point of picturing their kid, not yet born, becoming president as a result of the fine set of books they were to buy. The wife realised what was up, and tried to kick the husband under the table and instead hit my dad's shin. He turned to her and said "don't worry my dear, you husband will buy the books for you!" and she was so embarassed, she did!

Rick, I read your last post, about how being a professional musician has improved your social life and I just wanted to know what I've been doing wrong for the last 25+ years. You see I'm a musician too but have not been able to achieve the same results with my endeavors. I have recently completed the world famous course How To Make A Million Dollars A Year Playing Folk Music and am eager to get started on this new self improvement course. Can you help me? Please inform me where to send my $29.95 (is that Candian or U.S. dollars) to receive my very own copy of Secrets Of Social Success As A Professional Musician. I understand if I include the contact information of ten of my closest friends I will receive a special discount rate to your monthly publication as well, Professional Musician's Social Secrets Monthly. Please note that an additonal $9.95 will be included with my order to guarantee rush delivery of this material to me! Included as well will be an additional $19.95 that I might receive this package before Christmas. I can't tell you how much this means to me and I am very anxious to get started right away on the road to social success as a professional musician. Please include with my order information about PMSS University. I understand I will only be charged a $5.95 shipping fee for this information and that prices for this offer may change at any time without prior notice to me. Thankyou so much for your willingness to share your valuable secrets with other musicians all across the world. I further understand that with my order I can make a tax deductable donation up to $39.95 to the Professional Musician's Social Secrets Missionary Fund (a nonprofit organization) which uses their resources to research new methods to aid this cause. God bless you Rick and your all important work for this very worthy cause. Sincerely, Reg

Don't get too excited about Rick's success. Remember that in Canada the fairer sex has their pick of millions of toothless hockey players with the social graces of an Orangutan (of which I'm one). Folk singers look pretty good by comparison up here.

I'll go for the extra $1500 a month. Thanks. Glad to hear it doesn't effect what I'm doing because I don't do anything other than eat, sleep, drink and muck about of the Mudcat.

Just wire the money c/o The Mudcat Cafe, West Chester, PA... and make sure you get it there every month by the first!

tsk...DrumCat..we do know $$$$ have to come FROM somewhere...you don't just print it and send it to us...and almost ALL of these "get rich quick & easy" schemes either pay off only to those who get in on the first wave, OR require some sort or pressure scam on those who can least afford it. And ANYTIME there is no hint of the scheme, you can bet it is either quasi-legal, mindlessly boring, or shamelessly overrated
