Subject: new/old guitar strings .. OK? From: Edmund Flynn (inactive) Date: 15 Dec 00 - 11:42 PM I just ran across a couple of sets of Augustine nylon guitar strings that I must have misplaced more than ten years ago. Do you suuppose they would still be worth using? |

From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 16 Dec 00 - 05:31 AM I assume you still have a nylon string guitar ;} I think nylon does deteriorate; but most of the damage seems to be exposure to the elements and mildew, so if the strings were packaged, I would try them myself. Subject: RE: new/old guitar strings .. OK? From: GUEST,CraigS Date: 16 Dec 00 - 08:49 PM If nylon strings have deteriorated, you soon know about it - they get crystalline, this makes them opaque, and bits flake off. The bass strings don't suffer as much as the monofilament trebles, so if you find they break up on you it's worth finding a store that has single classical strings for sale and just replacing the trebles. NB: light exposure hastens deterioration, so if you keep the guitar in the dark the strings last longer. The older the strings, the more susceptible they are to light. (Sorry if I used too many long words, Spaw) |
