Hi Steve, I didn't see this song in the Digital Tradition, but the lyrics are in a discussion here.

EIGHT MORE MILES TO LOUISVILLE

I've traveled o'er this country wide seeking fortune fair
Up and down the two coastlines, I've traveled everywhere
From Portland east to Portland west and back across the line
I'm going now to Louisville, that old hometown of mine.

Chorus:
Eight more miles and Louisville will just be comin' into my view
Eight more miles on this old road and I'll never more be blue
I knew some day that I'd be back, knew it from the start
Eight more miles to Louisville, the hometown of my heart.

I got a gal in Louisville that I love best of all.
I got a gal in Louisville, she's long and she's tall.
She's not the kind of gal you'd find travelin' through the land.
I'm headed now to Louisville to win her heart and hand.

Chorus

Now I can picture in my mind a place we'll call our home
A humble little hut for two, and I nevermore will roam
The place that's right for that love site is in those bluegrass hills
Where gently flows the Ohio by a place called Louisville.

Every time I hear that song or play it as good as I can on the banjo, I am reminded of Grandpa Jones with his clawhammer style playing and singing it. Love to hear him do that nymber!! Shame we lost him......but his music lives on!

Thanks for the fast replies. Got the lyrics from Ebbie- a great early Christmas present. I'll log off and start practising- Bluegrass Christmas party Monday here in Vancouver, Canada ! Snow and rain- a good time to stay indoors and pick. I listen to Grampa Jones too, Banjer. He was unique talent- lots of energy. Thanks again, Merry Christmas everyone...

Steve

Here's an interesting story I've heard several times, but it is still funny.

Ron Wall makes fairly frequent trips to Mountain View, especially for the autoharp workshops every year. (He is a first class player and instructor) His wife, Alisa Jones Wall has been here the last couple of years for the Grandpa Jones Tribute Concerts. Both were regular performers at the Ozark Folk Center years ago. But here's the story, pretty much as Ron tells it:

Back when they first met, they were on a float trip on the Buffalo River (a wonderful experience ~~ highly recommended) and Ron decided to impress Alisa with a song that he had recently learned. He said something like, "Here's a great song I bet you've never heard." and proceeded to sing Eight More Miles To Louisville! To which Alisa replied, "Daddy wrote that song, and that's not the way it goes!"

Ebbie's second verse should read: "There's bound to be a gal somewhere that you love most of all. Mine lives down in Louisville, she's long and she is tall..." I echo Banjer's sentiments: Grandpa was one of the very best.

I had opportunity to meet Grandpa's nephew at one of the reenactments. He and another feller were doing some minstrel and period music. It was one of the smaller events that we attend but I cannot for the life of me remember which one it was. This was also several years ago. (Before Grandpa left us)

I've only heard Tony Rice and Norman Blake do this song. I guess I've led a pretty sheltered existence! Great song! Thanks for the lyrics!

This one is great but the one I know and need the rest of the words for is Grandpa's "Louisville is 8 miles back and I'm on my way somewhere". Do you have the words to that one???

Great Story. I need Lyrics and would love a recording of the Grandpa Jones "Louisville is 8 Miles Back". I want information about the Mountain View tribute to Grandpa Jones cause I love it there. My wife and I keep in touch with Ron and Peggy Taylor. They yodel like nobody I ever heard.
