Hello I have been looking for a copy of this song by the Copper Family but have been unable to find it, Thought I had found it and ordered it but have heard nothing from the people I ordered it from. If anyone knows where I can get a copy or would be willing to share a copy I would be eternally grateful. Thanks for your time! Tiffany Hamilton

Tiffany, if you live in the US, you can call Dick Greenhaus at Camsco Music at at 1-800-548-3655. Camsco has a huge selection of folk recordings and Dick's willing to get something for you if he doesn't have it in stock. (I'll bet he has the Coppers, though.)

Just thought I might mention the Walter Hyatt song "Babes In the Woods" that is sung by Lyle Lovett on his double album "Step Inside This House". Perhaps it is the same.

I have checked and you would think with the title being the same that the song would be too, but its not. Thanks for the idea though!!!

"The Babes in the wood", (with music) a lyric part of the old ballad, Laws Q34, are in: Pankake/ Prairie Home Companion Songbook; Pound/ Nebraska; Pound/ American Ballads; Sharp/ Appalachain; Randolph/ Ozarks; Brewster/ Indiana; Morris/ Florida; Mason/ Nursery Rhymes; Belden/ Missouri; Hudson/ Mississippi; and McGill/ Kentucky among other places (like JAF, JEFDSS). Sandy and Caroline Paton's Folk Lyric and Peter Kennedy's Folk Tracks and BBC all have recordings of the Copper family singing it. Other recordings: Edith Fowke, Lib. of Congress.

A good version is in Bob Copper's book A Song for Every Season, with lots of other good songs, and an account of the background to the singing of them.

My official unofficial Coppers page has information about how to buy Bob Copper's book from the source himself.

(As well as all the lyrics to all the recordings.)

Since it was a recording Tiffany wanted rather than printed sources, here is a list (not necessarily complete).   "Babes in the Wood" is currently available sung by the Copper Family on these recordings (various lineups):

Coppersongs 3  [Coppersongs CD3, 1998]  Bob, together with his son, daughter and son-in-law, and his six grandchildren.

English Shepherd and Farming Songs  Bob and Ron Copper, a live recording made by Peter Kennedy in, presumably, the late 1950s /early 60s(?) [Folk Legacy Cassette C-19]

The Banks of Claudy Bob and Ron Copper (1963) [Folktrax 081 - C60]

Come All You Bold Britons  The Copper Family (Bob, Ron,John and Jill, rec. 1963-1983) [Folktrax 238-C90]

Folktrax recordings (note: these are field-recordings made mostly by Peter Kennedy some time ago, so don't expect studio quality sound) can be ordered directly from  Folktrax.org

Thanks to everyone, Malcolm thanks so much for all the sites to find recordings of the Coppers. I think I might have a copy coming in the next week or so.
