Subject: Irish Songs of Resistance -Similar Books

I've only just tracked down a copy of Irish Songs of Resistance (1169 - 1923) published by Oak in 1962 and it does a pretty good job in 100 odd pages of providing a brief history of the period as background to a selection of maybe 60 Irish songs. Of these perhaps 40 are in the DT, but I haven't done an exhaustive check yet.

Any suggestions as to similar books, including any post 1923 collections. I have seen Danny Doyle's masterful performance on this period up to early 1920's and I believe that he has published something similar. Is this worth the effort and money to buy?

Regards, John

Is the author called Galvin?

There's a book especially on the Easter Rising (have to look details at home) also mingling history and song. Isn't there a book titled 'If I had a song' doing the same job for the American Union history? 'Songs of struggle and protest' (McDonnell) also tries a similar approach.

I love those books. There are several of them about Geramn songs.

Take a Look at Blood On the Harp A good historical summary author: Turlough Faolain

Also: O'Sullivan, Songs of the Irish For the truly folk ones. The ones with an Irish Gaelic base.

T.C. Croker Popular Songs, Illustrative of the French Invasions of Ireland, London 1845-47

Galvin, P. Songs of Irish Rsistance, London 1953

Greaves, C.D. The Easter Rising in Song and Ballad, London 1980

R. Mason The Song Lore of Ireland, New York, 1911

J. McDonnell Songs of Struggle and Protest Dublin 1979

Nation The Writers of The Spirit of the Nation, Ballads and Songs, Dublin 1845,1882

O'Boyle The Irish Song Tradition Dublin 1976

H. H. Sparling ed. Irish Minstrely London 1887

G.D. Zimmerman Songs of Irish Rebellinon 1967

Now that should give you a start. I will not pick favorites but state that most are good for something. Most song books of Irish songs contain rebel songs.

Now that you have my list for rebel songs please take a moment to visit my collection of Ulster Protestant, Unionist, Loyalist songs and learn of the other side of the grand tradition of the isle of Ireland- a side which is just as good but is less known and less freely distributed due to black listing at Irish events activities and in music shops.

Terry Moylan's brand new book - there was a thread about it within the last 2 weeks - fits the bill, I'm sure.

All the best,
Dan

I have many books on Irish Songs, most of them are mentioned above. I do have one book, it is the third in a series called "SOnGS OF THE GAEL". I do not have volume 1 or 2. The book was produced by Padruig Bretnac in Dublin 1921.
Here is an index of the contents of Songs of The Gael Vol 3. I believe this book may be out of print. My copy is very worn, it was printed by Browne and Nolan, 41 and 42 Nassau Street, Dublin. Not all songs are REBEL SONGS but there is a fair sprinkling of them,If you require any particular one. please let me know and I will gladly post the lyrics.
