Hi, Fairy Hill - if you put Tweed in the filter and set the age all the way back, you'll find several discussions of the song. Click here for the lyrics and tune of "Both Sides the Tweed" in our Digital Tradition folk song database.
All the best to you.

I am looking for a complete set of lyrics for Both Sides of the Tweed. I have two partials. One is from another website and has missing words and the other is what I can glean off of a very bad recording I made off the radio some 15 years ago. My recording is of an unknown woman accompanied by an accordiain and what probably is a penny whistle. They apear to be different versions though. The recording has as it's chorus line:
"Let the love of our land's sacred rights
To the love of our people succeed."

The written partial I have goes:
"Let the love of our King's sacred rights
To the love of our people succeed."

What is the history behind this. Other than knowing that the Tweed is a river, I am clueless.

In the beginning when God created the universe he went missing for about a week. Upon his return Gabriel asked him where he had been, I just made another planet was the reply. I will call it Earth. Everything on Earth will be balanced, There will be very cold countries and also very hot countries. The cold countries will not be able to grow certains foods during the winters and the hot countries will face drought etc during the summer. All countries will be faced with times of plenty and times of need, Floods and droughts etc. Everything balanced.

Gabriel pointed to a little green spot on Earth and asked " What is this called" Ah God replied that is Ireland. Never too hot and never too cold, Green valleys, clear clean rivers, populated by poets, music lovers and good looking women. A climate where almost anything grows.

Gabriel asked about the balance . "How come the rest of the planet has good and bad times but this little island everything seems to like paradise, what are tou going to do to balance things?". God answered " Just wait till you see who they will have for neighbours."

Ireland and Scotland have a long history of exploitation by the English. These songs represent the feelings of of anger and disappointment of the Irish for hundreds of years.
On the other thread i posted titled SCOTLAND,which i doubt anyone took the time to read, the connection between Scotland and Ireland concerning England can be clearly seen.

We,Scotland and Ireland ,are of a different race than the English, unfortunately our close proximity to MOTHER ENGLAND has aggravated this condition. All we ever wanted was to be left alone to follow our own destiny as a separate, but equal, part of the Brotherhood of Man.

Those of you who are interest in these songs[Irish and Scottish] and would like to know the history of the relationship between us and them will find a wealth of information regarding our struggle for independance.

Having said that,i realise that times have changed mostly for the better but there is still a mind-set regarding the the superiority of our neighbors.
That's it,ah'm gaun back tae mah ain Scots tounge noo.Hae a read at baith these posts,ye'll find them tae be a bit o ane eye opener. Then again, wha cares.

Have you got the version of "Down by the Liffeyside" with the line "and we'll spike the guns of the Saxon Huns"? All I've been able to find is the politically correct version, not the one I learned as a kid.

Greetings

While it does seem that there's a large amount of anti-British sentiment in the song list on Mudcat, remember that were primarily dealing with songs in the English language. That's why there isn't a lot of anti-Franco songs or Korean ditties about the evil Japanese and the such. Unfortunately, the Brits have pissed off the other English speaking locales a bit more than vice-versa.

I am of English and German extraction - and I am not offended by negative songs about them (as well as U.S. negative songs, too). I'd bet that the archives of Central American Folk Songs out there, if there are any, are filled with anti-Yankee sentiments. More power to them, regardless if I agree with them or not. Song is a nearly universal form of protest.

I agree that people can get upset with things said here, and enouraging people to exercise restraint is a good thing, but until the Irish-British matter is solved, once and for all, there will be 'anti' songs. Anyone who is unhappy with that, should start helping the two sides find more common ground.

Pax yall

Hi Jimmy - I agree with the sentiment about no guns but stay on topic???

Come on, when has that ever happened at the 'cat;-)

I don't really think the guns thing would have worked BTW. When did not having a armed target stop any gunman from shooting at people. Or when did not having military targets stop any organisation from blowing innocent people?

Anyway - I have said my bit and don't want to come across as pro british government - I am far from it - so I will shut up now.

Please continue to post and discuss the songs as long as they give pleasure to someone.

Cheers

DtG

Widowmaker,

I have that song on an LP, by one of Irish Showbands. I will have to do a bit of searching, but will get back to you,

Gnome, I would like this thread to stay on the topic of music and songs and I appreciate your feelings, but if the English government did not want the Irish to shoot at the tans, then they should have sent them over without guns.

The 'tans' were not all volunteers, Jimmy. Some, such as my grandad, were recruited specificaly from Salford and Liverpool because of the stong Irish catholic communities there. The reasoning (If you can call it that from british high command!) was that the IRA would not shoot there own.

The fact that my grandad was neither Irish or Catholic seems to prove the fact the they got things wrong sometimes;-)

Anyhow, Ray, I agree with Joe - keep posting the songs. As I said if they do offend anyone whoever it is can stop reading them.

My main point was that it seems a little peculiar to me that it is OK to use the term "British scum" (See above) but not Jewish/Black/Polish/Irish etc etc scum.

BTW - I have no issue with Irish rebel songs about the 'old' struggles and agree wholeheartedly that as a nation the Irish have suffered under Britsh rule. The old songs are about people long dead and beyond caring. I have been known to render a passible version of "Roddy McCorly" myself. It is only songs refering to people, still alive or having living releatives, in a heteful or derogatory manner that may offend someone not as thick skinned as me!

Cheers and, once again, peace and good wishes to all.

Dave the Gnome

LYRIC-
I may be alone in feeling this way, but I'm somewhat annoyed by the concept of "trading" songs. The DT, which has well over 100 Irish rebel songs, is dedicated to the concept of sharing, not trading.

If you post a song here, it goes to everyone. And songs that everyone else posts can go to you.

Subject: Lyr Add: AUF WEIDERSEHEN TO CROSSMAGLEN and more
From: LYRIC
Date: 22 Dec 00 - 01:27 PM

AUF WEIDERSEHEN TO CROSSMAGLEN

(Chorus)
So auf weidersehen to Crossmaglen
Farewell to Carrickmore
I have seen enough of Ireland boys
And I won't be back for more, no I won't be back for more

The recruiting sergeant he told me son
Well army life it is fine
But he did not mention the mortar bombs
Or bloody Claymore mines

(Chorus)

They told me of the German girls
The disco's every night
But the only craic in South Armagh
Comes from an armalite

(Chorus)

Well I spent some time on the Toomebridge line
Where I thought I'd known no fear
Till a van bomb parked outside our base
Brought the barracks around my ears

(Chorus)

So farewell at last to West Belfast
To the Markets and the Falls
I quickly got the message there
It was written on the walls
'BRITS OUT'

(Chorus)

So all you young lads, though in England you be
Signing on the breau
Just stay well away from the IRA
And they won't bother you

(Chorus *2)

The Irish Brigade
(Written by Gerry O'Glacain)

CROSSMAGLEN

(Chorus)
In Crossmaglen the fire burns true
The patriot flame will never die
And when you hear the battle cry
It will be those fighting men from Crossmaglen

I'll sing a song of the bravest men
That famous fighting unit from Armagh
We are the men from Crossmaglen
Among the bravest Ireland's ever saw

(Chorus)

At night you'd here bazookas roar
Armalites are heard across the land
The IRA their spirits soar
They know their reckoning has come to hand

(Chorus)

Those British scum, they do fear
Will never again see their cursed shore
Because the know they will pay dear
The RA will even Ireland's bloody score

(Chorus)

We won't give up until we're free
Till Ireland is out of British hands
Never rest until we see
Britannia rule driven from our land

(Chorus)

(Written by Reavy)

THE LAST FAREWELL

Dearest mother I am writing
Just to say I won't be home
There is something that I have to do
And I must do alone
They took me and they put me
In this lonely prison cell
Tonight my thoughts are with you
As I say my last farewell

(Chorus)
So say goodbye to Margaret
Mary, Brigid and Michael
I have no words to tell you
How much I'll miss you all
Although I may not show it
You know I love you well
So in my final letter
I will bid my last farewell

Dearest brother, won't you take good care
Of all the folks for me
Go home to Rathfarnham
On the day they set you free
I was happy when you stood by me
In all that we've been through
No one has ever had so through
A brother such as you

(Chorus)

Dearest mother it's so very sad
That now we have to part
To understand the reasons
That trouble your poor heart
I have told you since I was a boy
It was my destiny
To die a true brave soldier
So that one-day you'd be free

(Chorus)

I would not vote for censorship of the DT but it is sad to see so much hate.A peaceful and joyous Christmas to all.Keith

THREAD CREEP WARNING - but could be important!

Sorry about this guys. I love Irish music. I love Ireland. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt as they say. Even been to Tullamore and sampled the fabulous 'dew'!

I'm not sure about Irish Rebel Songs and their place on the DT though. We have had enough controversy about anti-(enter your favourite ethnic group here) songs. Lots of the rebel songs I have heard are very anti-brit. As a brit of mixed race (Polish/Russian/Welsh icluded) but having a grandfather (deceased) who was in the hated (by the Irish) black and tans I could get offended by having my relative called all the names under the sun for simply doing their jobs. Grandad Stanley was a peaceful, loving family man, injured in WW1 and sent to Ireland against his wishes.

I don't think I will get offended - I will simply not read or listen to the songs. Some other sensitive soul may be upset though. I am just saying be careful about what you post, who you offend and, primarily, what hatreds you perpetrate.

Sorry to be a wet blanket and assuring you I am not anti-anything but war and violence.

Peace and best wishes for the season anyway

Dave the Gnome

MMario,
that was really helpful! Thanks

LYRIC,
you have an impressive list, but there might be some songs already in the datbase and forum here you do not know of. Check

Helicopter song (there are two song with this title and it might be different from the one you have)
Lord Nelson (same story as Nelson's Farewell, but different song)
Fifth day of October
Banks of the Moy
Carrig Rua
Ballyneety's walls

You can also search the database by entering '@rebel' in the search window (upper right).

And then you might like to look here (but perhaps you know this site already)

My wishes: Please post in this forum:
Auf Wiedersehen, Crossmaglen
The last farewell

If you feel like, you can also post other songs in your list (I'm definitely not the only one interested), but many of them are already either in the DT database or in the Forum. So you could do a search (in the window titled Digitrad and Forum search) before posting a song that has already been posted.

Wolfgang

Both sides the Tweed is a Scottish song, so I don't think it quite counts as an Irish Rebel Song.

How're ye, Lyric.

There is a request from Jed who is looking for a 1916 ballad in this thread:

If you recognise it ('cos nobody else does), maybe you could give him a hand out with it.

Good on ye!

B.

Lyric.

Let us have a listing of your songs. I have an extensive collection, you can see a small number on the thread on Irish Rebel Songbooks.

P.S. I'm from up in Co Antrim, but I liked Offaly when I went there, espcially the singing pubs that are all over the place. Love the county hurling and football jersey as well, it would be hard to score against it.
