One is from another website and has missing words and the other is what I can glean off of a very bad recording I made off the radio some 15 years ago. My recording is of an unknown woman accompanied by an accordiain and what probably is a penny whistle. They apear to be different versions though. The recording has as it's chorus line: "Let the love of our land's sacred rights To the love of our people succeed." The written partial I have goes: "Let the love of our King's sacred rights To the love of our people succeed." What is the history behind this. Other than knowing that the Tweed is a river, I am clueless. |

Never too hot and never too cold, Green valleys, clear clean rivers, populated by poets, music lovers and good looking women. A climate where almost anything grows. Gabriel asked about the balance . "How come the rest of the planet has good and bad times but this little island everything seems to like paradise, what are tou going to do to balance things?". God answered " Just wait till you see who they will have for neighbours." |

That's why there isn't a lot of anti-Franco songs or Korean ditties about the evil Japanese and the such. Unfortunately, the Brits have pissed off the other English speaking locales a bit more than vice-versa. I am of English and German extraction - and I am not offended by negative songs about them (as well as U.S. negative songs, too). I'd bet that the archives of Central American Folk Songs out there, if there are any, are filled with anti-Yankee sentiments. More power to them, regardless if I agree with them or not. Song is a nearly universal form of protest. I agree that people can get upset with things said here, and enouraging people to exercise restraint is a good thing, but until the Irish-British matter is solved, once and for all, there will be 'anti' songs. Anyone who is unhappy with that, should start helping the two sides find more common ground. Pax yall |

Some, such as my grandad, were recruited specificaly from Salford and Liverpool because of the stong Irish catholic communities there. The reasoning (If you can call it that from british high command!) was that the IRA would not shoot there own. The fact that my grandad was neither Irish or Catholic seems to prove the fact the they got things wrong sometimes;-) Anyhow, Ray, I agree with Joe - keep posting the songs. As I said if they do offend anyone whoever it is can stop reading them. My main point was that it seems a little peculiar to me that it is OK to use the term "British scum" (See above) but not Jewish/Black/Polish/Irish etc etc scum. BTW - I have no issue with Irish rebel songs about the 'old' struggles and agree wholeheartedly that as a nation the Irish have suffered under Britsh rule. The old songs are about people long dead and beyond caring. I have been known to render a passible version of "Roddy McCorly" myself. It is only songs refering to people, still alive or having living releatives, in a heteful or derogatory manner that may offend someone not as thick skinned as me! I love Ireland. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt as they say. Even been to Tullamore and sampled the fabulous 'dew'! I'm not sure about Irish Rebel Songs and their place on the DT though. We have had enough controversy about anti-(enter your favourite ethnic group here) songs. Lots of the rebel songs I have heard are very anti-brit. As a brit of mixed race (Polish/Russian/Welsh icluded) but having a grandfather (deceased) who was in the hated (by the Irish) black and tans I could get offended by having my relative called all the names under the sun for simply doing their jobs. Grandad Stanley was a peaceful, loving family man, injured in WW1 and sent to Ireland against his wishes. I don't think I will get offended - I will simply not read or listen to the songs. Some other sensitive soul may be upset though. I am just saying be careful about what you post, who you offend and, primarily, what hatreds you perpetrate.
