It was "Letter From Vietnam", with the immortal lines, Last night we had a firefight Machine guns shooting tracers through the night Now there's a song to bring tears to your eyes... Oh, and if any of you are still there from a year ago, "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Ha", b/w "aH aH, yawA eM ekaT ot gnimoC er'yehT", was recorded by Napoleon XIV, not XVI. But who's counting? Aloha, Mark PS, on an early post to this thread, a Guest mentioned that Joni Mitchell recorded her song "Urge for Going" as the B side of a 45. For anyone who's interested, there's a discussion of that recording and the song on this thread. For the record (!), the A side was apparently "Big Yellow Taxi", not "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio". |

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST,hollowfox, visiting the main library Date: 26 Dec 00 - 06:00 PM Rube 1, the lyrics to the Bonanza theme song can be found, with guitar chords, yet, in "Big Book of TV Theme Songs" published by the Hal Leonard Corp (www.halleonard.com), ISBN 0-634-00614-2. This book is just new, so you can probably find it in a bookstore as well. It's also in that old classic "TV Theme Song Sing-Along Book" John Javna (ed), St Martin's Press, 1984. Neither book had your verse about the pot of gold, though (at least at my fast glance); the (first?) verse dealt with having a right to pick a fight. I liked your verse better. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Bernard Date: 26 Dec 00 - 07:56 AM Remember 'Telstar' by the Tornadoes? The 'B' side is 'Jungle Fever', which is very useful for 'atmospheric' music to elicit excellent 'creative writing' from junior school classes. On a completely different tack, 'Telstar' was recorded using a Selmer Clavioline (valve - tube! - based early synthesiser). I recently acquired a complete, although not fully functional original, which I am in the middle of renovating. I know it's a long shot, but has anyone out there got any circuit drawings? I tried the website, but it's not very technical. Most of the problems are dirty switch contacts, but the 'tremolo' is almost non-existent, and it's the old fashioned tag-board construction, making it very difficult to follow the circuits! |

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Seth Date: 23 Dec 00 - 02:19 AM WHile digging around in my favorite GoodWill store a while back, I found a stack of 78's. Usually these are only good for Frisbees, but on the bottom of the stack I found the 78 of "Please, Please, Please" James Brown's first. I had read a story about this record somewhere, when the head of King records heard the demo of PPP, , he wouldn't release it because he thought that it was just completely nutso, nobody could stand to hear it. Eventually, he was persuaded to release as a B side. The A and B sides of this record sound as if they are done by different people, in a different studio, with different musicians, but A is a forgettable soul ballad that James Brown can't bring to life no matter how much CPR he gives it. "Please, Please, Please" through the scratches and dust of this old record snaps and sizzles like a downed power cable. James Brown inventing James Brown.

I think Creedence Clearwater also had some good combinations, although I'm not sure I can remember them specifically (was "Down On The Corner" backed by "Fortunate Son"? It's a small snail like thing and the fleshy part has to be extracted with a pin; thus, to winkle something out of somebody means it has been quite a task.
Apparently there's a Japanese species of winkle that's been attacking French oysters in their beds. What is the world coming to. LFF |

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 21 Dec 00 - 01:53 PM Rolf Harris had a big hit with the atmospheric didgeridoo based "Sun Arise".
The little comic gem on the B side was "Someone's pinched me Winkles!", containing a tremendous rhyme in the line:
"You may say it's a load of old nonsense,
LFF PS Have Stateside 'catters heard of Rolf? And do you have winkles over there? |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Peter Kasin Date: 21 Dec 00 - 03:52 AM The B side of "Irene, Goodnight" as sung by The Weavers, is the rousing "Tzena, Tzena." |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: RWilhelm Date: 21 Dec 00 - 01:36 AM Seth, The CD "The Ultimate Coasters" includes "Run, Red, Run" It doesn't include "What About Us" but it is a great collection. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Seth Date: 21 Dec 00 - 12:46 AM Yes, the Coasters had great "B" sides. I had the single of "What About Us?", a thinly disguised civil rights message, and the flip was " Run, Red, Run" , about an organ grinder who has an unhappy relationship with his monkey. I haven't been able to find either of these on any Coasters compilation, but I'm sure it's out there if I look hard enough Seth |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST Date: 20 Dec 00 - 05:27 PM I think the B side of "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" had "Urge For Going" Joni Mitchell's version. A great "B" side> |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Hollowfox Date: 20 Dec 00 - 03:43 PM In 1983, Green Tiger Press put out a picture book version of "Teddy Bears' Picnic" with a companion record of the song. Side A was Bing Crosby, but Side B was done by a group called The Bearcats. If anybody *Ever* finds a whole album by this group, let me know. I want it, or at least a copy. As I recall, I described it as sounding like the record producer's nephew's klezmer band, on bad acid. we'd haul adult friends over just to hear it, and it had it all; the slightly unusual tempo, the occasional sound in the background of someone accidentally sitting on a concertina. If Dr. Demento doesn't have this, he should. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Gary T Date: 20 Dec 00 - 02:49 PM The B side of some Manfred Mann hit (I forget which) was the ORIGINAL "Fox On The Run". This now a bluegrass standard, and although the song is still good, the bluegrass arrangement pales in comparison to the original (mainly due to a castrated chord sequence, though a ninety mile-per-hour tempo doesn't help much, either). I loved this song the first time I heard it. It even had baying hounds during the fade-out. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Matt_R Date: 20 Dec 00 - 10:59 AM Each Oasis CD-single has 3 B-sides on it, in addition to the one album cut...though now they've reduced it to only 2. Some of their B-sides a even better than album track, for instance "Stay Young," "Acquiese" and "Whatever" which is an oddity indeed...a non-album track B-side released as a single. Except for just 4 singles...I own every Oasis b-side ever made. On the other hand, I can sing ALL of them...LOL. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST Date: 20 Dec 00 - 08:49 AM The olympics "Western Movies" had a great B side called "Well" A lot of the coasters hits had great B sides as well. |
Subject: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Seth Date: 20 Dec 00 - 04:15 AM Some of my favorite songs were the B sides of records( remember them?) I bought or was given for the hit. For example, the other side of the " Wake Up Little Susie" 45 by the Everly Brothers was a song that I liked beter called "Maybe Tomorrow" . The other side of " Great Balls of Fire" 45 was the country classic "You Win Again" My parents got me a 78 of "Rudolf the RNRD" when I was five or six, but what I really liked was the song on the other side "If It Doesn't Snow on Christmas" I think I only played this about 20,000 times, my parents thinking long and hard about EVER getting me another record! So enough, what are some of your fave "B" sides? Oh yeah does anyone know the words to " If It Doesn't Snow on Christmas"? Gene Autry retired on what he made from the "A" side. Seth from China |
