Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Seth Date: 22 Dec 00 - 04:06 PM The "B" side of " Little Bitty Pretty One" by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers was a great song " I'm Glad I'm Not A Juvenile Deliquent". On the other side of "Satisfaction" the Rolling Stones recorded "Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man" and of course, the B side of Elvis's first recording " That's Alright Mama" had "Blue Moon of Kentucky" on it.

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST,jaze Date: 22 Dec 00 - 01:39 PM Motown was usually good at giving two good songs for the price of one. Many of the "B" side of Supremes, Temptations, and Four Tops records were equally as good as the hit. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST,Pete Peterson at work Date: 22 Dec 00 - 10:45 AM Back in 1927, DaCosta Woltz's Southern Broadcasters came into the studio with this wonderful arrangement of an old minstrel song, Merry Girl (one of the eight happy love songs that i know). When it was pointed out to them that records now had TWO sides (early Ernest Stoneman were on those thick Edison one-sided records, but I digress) they retired among themselves and came up with that wonderful version of "Yellow Rose of Texas" with the politically incorrect words that every old time band plays. The "B" side was the big hit. |

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Grab Date: 22 Dec 00 - 10:18 AM Monty Python/Eric Idle: "I bet you they won't play this song on the radio", which was the B-side to "Always look on the bright side of life". Dying to play that sometime, but I don't have enough sound effects! Grab. |

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Nathan in Texas Date: 22 Dec 00 - 10:04 AM I seem to recall that Donovan's, "Atlantis" was a B side and surprised the producers by becoming the hit. Strangest B side I remember was Napoleon XIV "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Ha." The B side was the same song recorded backwards. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Steve Latimer Date: 22 Dec 00 - 08:49 AM I've always liked the faster version of "Revolution" off the Beatles "Hey Jude" single. Steve

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST,Dita Date: 22 Dec 00 - 08:44 AM Gaty T - It was Charlie Drake who sang " My boomerang wont come back" along with such other greats as "Please Mr. Custer" and "Mommy, give me a drink of Water" My favourite B side must be Alex Cambell singing "Pack up your sorrows" on the flip of "Victoria dines alone". love john. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Whistle Stop Date: 22 Dec 00 - 08:10 AM Peter and Mousethief, my recollection was that "I'm Down" was the B side to "Help". However, there have been many years and lots of... experiences since then, so I could be wrong. Matt, I'm with you -- I really liked "Old Brown Shoe". And LEJ, I was also going to mention "She Loves You/I'll Get You" -- I'm sure the Beatles considered the latter a throwaway, but the tune was infectious. Just another Beatles fan showing his age. I think Creedence Clearwater also had some good combinations, although I'm not sure I can remember them specifically (was "Down On The Corner" backed by "Fortunate Son"? "Green River" backed by "Lodi"? the memory fades). I think it was their strategy to release singles that contained two strong songs, in the hopes that one would make the charts. |

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Gary T Date: 21 Dec 00 - 11:37 PM LFF, Rolf Harris had a U.S. chart hit with "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport," and I believe it was he who did "My Boomerang Won't Come Back." I would think that most folks who aren't familiar with those songs probably don't recognize his name. I would venture that a winkle is what we know as a periwinkle. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Tattie Bogle Date: 21 Dec 00 - 08:08 PM Play with Fire by the Rolling Stones - can't even remember what the A side was now, but liked the line about "Now she gets her kicks in Stepney" as I was living in Stepney Green at the time!! Tattie B |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 21 Dec 00 - 05:40 PM Well, Melani, a winkle is a marine gastropod, much favoured by Cockneys as a snack when on outings to the seaside.
It's a small snail like thing and the fleshy part has to be extracted with a pin; thus, to winkle something out of somebody means it has been quite a task.
Apparently there's a Japanese species of winkle that's been attacking French oysters in their beds. What is the world coming to. LFF |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: mousethief Date: 21 Dec 00 - 05:18 PM What's wrong with You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)? I love that song! It's a scream! The Beatles making fun of the Beatles! On the other hand "I'm Down" which I think was an "A" side, is a throwaway. Bleh. alex |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Matt_R Date: 21 Dec 00 - 05:15 PM Now what d'yer mean? "Old Brown Shoe" is a classic! Kickin' off this old brown shoe...baby I'm in love with you...so glad you came here...I know exactly how he felt! |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST,LEJ Date: 21 Dec 00 - 05:10 PM The flip of "I Want to Hold your Hand" was "I'll Get You in the End",which was a great song. Also,Marty Robbins' "El Paso" had a good gunslinger tune called "A Big Iron on his Hip" on the b side. The reverse of the Byrds' "Eight Miles High" which was terrific, was another excellent side,"Have You Seen Her Face". |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Peter T. Date: 21 Dec 00 - 05:00 PM Help was the A side, I think, to Ticket to Ride. One of those AA Beatle sides. The Beatles were big on other people's B sides (Buddy Holly covers, Arthur Alexander pieces, etc.). I remember Paul saying that that was one reason why they wouldn't toss off a bad B side if they could help it. (Which doesn't explain "Old Brown Shoe" or "You Know My Name (Look up the Number)). The best two sider ever, in my opinion, was "I Feel Fine/She's A Woman". Or maybe Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever...Pretty good value for money!!!!! yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Matt_R Date: 21 Dec 00 - 04:46 PM Possibly, Zeb, but Noel has said that his favorite song ever is "Ticket To Ride"...I wonder what the B-side to that is?

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 21 Dec 00 - 01:53 PM Rolf Harris had a big hit with the atmospheric didgeridoo based "Sun Arise".

Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Peter Kasin Date: 21 Dec 00 - 03:52 AM The B side of "Irene, Goodnight" as sung by The Weavers, is the rousing "Tzena, Tzena." |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: RWilhelm Date: 21 Dec 00 - 01:36 AM Seth, The CD "The Ultimate Coasters" includes "Run, Red, Run" It doesn't include "What About Us" but it is a great collection. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Seth Date: 21 Dec 00 - 12:46 AM Yes, the Coasters had great "B" sides. I had the single of "What About Us?", a thinly disguised civil rights message, and the flip was " Run, Red, Run" , about an organ grinder who has an unhappy relationship with his monkey. I haven't been able to find either of these on any Coasters compilation, but I'm sure it's out there if I look hard enough Seth |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST Date: 20 Dec 00 - 05:27 PM I think the B side of "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" had "Urge For Going" Joni Mitchell's version. A great "B" side> |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Hollowfox Date: 20 Dec 00 - 03:43 PM In 1983, Green Tiger Press put out a picture book version of "Teddy Bears' Picnic" with a companion record of the song. Side A was Bing Crosby, but Side B was done by a group called The Bearcats. If anybody *Ever* finds a whole album by this group, let me know. I want it, or at least a copy. As I recall, I described it as sounding like the record producer's nephew's klezmer band, on bad acid. we'd haul adult friends over just to hear it, and it had it all; the slightly unusual tempo, the occasional sound in the background of someone accidentally sitting on a concertina. If Dr. Demento doesn't have this, he should. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Gary T Date: 20 Dec 00 - 02:49 PM The B side of some Manfred Mann hit (I forget which) was the ORIGINAL "Fox On The Run". This now a bluegrass standard, and although the song is still good, the bluegrass arrangement pales in comparison to the original (mainly due to a castrated chord sequence, though a ninety mile-per-hour tempo doesn't help much, either). I loved this song the first time I heard it. It even had baying hounds during the fade-out. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Matt_R Date: 20 Dec 00 - 10:59 AM Each Oasis CD-single has 3 B-sides on it, in addition to the one album cut...though now they've reduced it to only 2. Some of their B-sides a even better than album track, for instance "Stay Young," "Acquiese" and "Whatever" which is an oddity indeed...a non-album track B-side released as a single. Except for just 4 singles...I own every Oasis b-side ever made. On the other hand, I can sing ALL of them...LOL. |
Subject: RE: BS: ' B' sides of favorite records From: GUEST Date: 20 Dec 00 - 08:49 AM The olympics "Western Movies" had a great B side called "Well" A lot of the coasters hits had great B sides as well. |
Subject: ' B' sides of favorite records From: Seth Date: 20 Dec 00 - 04:15 AM Some of my favorite songs were the B sides of records( remember them?) I bought or was given for the hit. For example, the other side of the " Wake Up Little Susie" 45 by the Everly Brothers was a song that I liked beter called "Maybe Tomorrow" . The other side of " Great Balls of Fire" 45 was the country classic "You Win Again" My parents got me a 78 of "Rudolf the RNRD" when I was five or six, but what I really liked was the song on the other side "If It Doesn't Snow on Christmas" I think I only played this about 20,000 times, my parents thinking long and hard about EVER getting me another record! So enough, what are some of your fave "B" sides? Oh yeah does anyone know the words to " If It Doesn't Snow on Christmas"? Gene Autry retired on what he made from the "A" side. Seth from China |
