Extra Stout/Marty - thank you for jumping right in there and welcome to the Mudcat Cafe. You were not pushy or anything else, but rather exhibited those qualites we admire the most around here: a willingness to care and share. Thank you.

As far as I know, they are not in your area. Hopefully we will hear from Wes, tomorrow. I've got a couple of options in mind if we don't.

Wishing you all the best and continuing to hold Wes and family in the Light,

kat

Emotion overwhelmed my memory, but my son, whose middle name is actually Joseph, is still praying for Patrick Smith. I feel a little stupid twisting in the wind out here by myself. If a physical address can help the parents or the boys, please feel free to use mine. I don't know where they are, but if they're near Toledo,(or Detroit, or Cleveland) I can go to them. On Christmas Day we clebrated the 100th Christmas Mass at St. Patrick's. Wes and Bretta and Brendan and Patrick were as much a part of the Mass as were the canal diggers and railroad men who built the church. Their candle is a big blue one in front of the Blessed Virgin's altar.

Duh, I just realized I have some phone numbers I can try (through the Smith's church) to get word to them about all this wonderful support and to see if there is some news.

I'll hope to see some news here from Wes in the AM, but if there is none, I will start phoning.

Hardiman remembered the Smiths through all the weekend services and today's, but especially the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass; and my own prayer candle has been burning steadily.

We had three lit in our hearth but one was duff and the wick disappeared! Is this co-incidence or what - we now also have one for each twin.

As the proud dad of twins (now nearly 16) my prayers and thoughts go to the whole family.

Peace and love to you all.

Wes and Bretta,

The candles I have set afire for you are not physical candles, but in my heart.

Candles In The Snow

Two candles stand within the snow
Flickering amidst the whitened earth
Fighting the wind for the fragile life
Since the very moment of their birth

Two candles stand within the snow
Beating back the shadows of death
Silent whispers crying to the night
Sucking in the breezes gentle breath

Two candles stand within the snow
Their light reaches across countless lands
Filling the hearts of infinite homes
They glint in the twirling frosted sands

Two candles stand within the snow
Filling my eyes with endless tears
Tears of hope, wishing they will
Continue to blaze for many years

Micca's citing the laws of physics was a comforting reminder of the unity underlying the limits of the speed of light and the power of prayer; both expressions of the power of a loving ( if occasionially inscrutable)God. I found a good, big wax candle for my house, and I'll add one at Old St. Patrick's( Toledo, Ohio) this morning. I'm new to Mudcat, so give me a break, please, if I come off as pushy, insensitive, or ignorant, but I wonder if the Smiths are in need of a more concrete expression of solidarity and support than e-mails and candles. Wes and Bretta, can we send you blankets or sleepers? Do you have diaper pins and pacifiers? Can we help pay for nurses or sitters? Is there anything you wish we would do? One or two writers mentioned the power of Patrick's name. It's my Confirmation name and my son's middle name. Maybe all the Paddys pulling together can do some good. Speaking of concrete expressions of support, for what good it may do, I am Marty Brogan. I live at 4828 Monac Drive, Toledo, Ohio,43623. My phone is 419-474-3883,e-mail to mbrogan@ireland.com or MJBrogan@peoplepc.com. This information is to be used for Mudcat purposes only. When I was meditaing on the candle to send energy to Wes and Bretta and the twins, last night,,,
I was thinking, light travels at 186000 miles a second, so the Light from all the candles lit is arriving simultaneously( since in those terms distances on earth are trivial) with the supportive good and healing feelings from the chain of little individual candles all around the world, all Faiths and beliefs united in a single purpose, and it restores my belief in the intrinsic goodness and commonality of purpose of my friends on the Mudcat ( regardless of the odd spat), may this co-operative effort help and warm the Smiths, and by the Rule of 3 reflect back to those who have joined in this, and give them the shared feeling of peace and Tranquility I felt thinking about it, Bright Blessings to them and to all my friends.and may My Lady smile benignly on Patrick and bring him safely through,
so mote it be
Micca..

Well, I just had a whole candle poem written and it was pretty nice. Brushed some magic key on the keyboard by accident and wiped it out; I have no idea where it went. Will maybe try to reconstruct it later. It was about our candles.

I went to four stores, today, looking for more unscented votive candles, as I am running out. The only ones I was able to find were candy-cane striped. At first I thought no that wouldn't be right and then I thought why not? It is their first Christmas, after all, so why not have a cheerful little light for them?

Lighting the candy-cane set just now.

I borrowed my stepson's icon of St. Patrick, placed it before an icon of our Lord, and lit a candle (in a glass holder of course -- that's why they make votive candle holders!) before the two of them. And repeatedly asked our Lord for healing, and St. Patrick for his prayers.

An extra reason this year for the Christmas candle we always have burning at this time.

Thee's a candle song we always have at Mass in Advent, with the chorus

Candle candle, burning bright, shining in the cold winter's night, candle candle, burning bright, fill our hearts with Christmas light.

I'll be thinking about Patrick and his brother and his parents when we sing it tomorrow night.

The candle flame bravely dances in the dark,
Staunchly holding at bay our fears
And lighting our hopes through another dark night.
Such a little thing, this candle,
Yet it carries a weight of hope and support that cannot be imagined.
Such a small light
Yet it lifts our spirits and takes our wishes out into the darkness
And links them to other candles,
Bravely burning in the dark across the world
And in our hearts.

I have two candles burning. I will replace them before I go to bed. Damn it, Patrick and Brendan! I am breaking a long-standing Sullivan tradition, since Nana Sullivan set fire to the house with candles on the branches of a Christmas Tree, of "No unattended candles" but it's that or keep an all night vigil. Think I will buy a bottle of Irish whiskey - Jamison?- and put it away for their 21st birthday. Sleep well, babies.

Mousethief, I think we're all pulling on different ropes, but we're all pulling in more or less the same direction.Have a good Orthodox service on Sunday. I'll be singing with the Methodists, and I'll bet the music will be grand both places.

Thank you very much for that validation, Alex. It means a lot coming from you.

Candles still going strong, here, and in several Christian churches of which I know.

Holding them in Divine Light.

Sorry I am late, but at this, the timely post-sunset of the Solstice, and therefore the longest night, may the rebirth of the Light in all of us help the boys and their parents to come to the best outcome... love and Peace..

we need the comfort of singing voices
until the dark time ends"

As one of the 2 token Orthodox Christians on Mudcat, I must say I approve heartily of lighting candles! I will do so for the Smith boys tonight at the Vespers service, and then again when I get home.

Alex

I had candles going today anyway Kat, as you would have known but I dedicate one for Brendan and one for Patrick and one for Kirsty McColl.May they light the boys path to health and life, and Kirsty's soul to where it will be at peace.

Same here as Sinsull and Hollowfox... I had a candle burning at midnight GMT, and thought peaceful thoughts. Will light another when I get back home now, to take us through tonight.

Lovely idea, kat.

Yesterday my twins brought home candles they had made in kindergarten, we lit them and placed them in our lovely snow, and sat in the cold and dark and admired the warmth and light. I didn't know about this till this morning either. I will do that every night (sorry I can't stay up till midnight) and think of Patrick, Brendan, Bretta and Wes. May the outcome be one of light and warmth for all of them.

Funny thing, the same thing happened to me as to Sinsull, except mine was a nice, growing green. Tonight I'll light a pair with the intent of keeping the growing going.

I just found this idea this morning. But last night I "needed" to light a candle and did. Sweet, calming vanilla. So I guess I was with you and will be every night until the twins are home safe and sound.

I'll light a candle before I go to bed, and explain it in the morning. Best thoughts to the lovely little ones, and parents both. I've always said Christmas babies were a blessing, but I'm biased. Have faith, I've seen miracles.

I have twin votive candles lit. Spaw, Ebbie and Kimmers, thank you for your eloquence; words have failed me in this, too close to home.

O Love that knoweth of no fear
O Love that sheds a joyous tear
O Love that keeps us whole and free
Such Love shall keep and comfort thee.

So mote it be!

And mine, accompanied by my not-so-non-denominational prayer.

O Creator of the Universe, hold this innocent infant in the palm of your hand. Grant strength, tenacity and stubborness to his spirit and healing to his tiny body. Give peace and untroubled sleep to his parents, that they may not collapse under the strain. And grant wisdom, insight and dexterity to his physicians; chase the weariness from the bodies of those who care for this little boy that they may serve him as best they can. For you are our Strength, our Shield and our Savior. Amen.

I will light a star candle 8 o'clock Alaska time. I will gaze upon it and meditate on the sweetnesses and the stings of life.

Last night I was thinking about those tiny boys and 'saw' them as young lads racing through the yard, as boys on their first day of school, as gawky long-legged preteens, as boys out on the town with their dates and finally as men with babes of their own and I thanked the Great Benevolence that brings us all here- and from my view, time after time for all time.

Wes and Bretta, thank you for letting us share this anxious but blessed time with you, even in a small way.

Ebbie

I suggested in the Smith Twins Birth Announcement thread that we pick a time and all light a candle for them, esp. little Patrick. Several people like the idea; Sorcha has already lit hers.

I also like the idea of each of us just lighting one throughout the next 24 hours, whenever we are able, esp. if the specific time is not convenient for some.

So, how about midnight, Mudcat time, tonight, for the specific.

Then anytime that is convenient from then on to tomorrow's midnight?

Just a nice way to connect our thoughts for them and maybe dissipate some of our own anxiety.

Thank you all very much,

kat
