From: katlaughing

Seems a nice time to give ourselves a pat on the shoulder for whatever we may have done this year that we wanted to, or to recount those good things which might have come about for each of us in the past year. Please share.

I just received two copies of a book in the mail, in which one of my essays is published. My first time of being really published, in a book, and they came looking for me! And, I am in there with some "big guns", although not necessarily ones to my liking.*BG* It is a paperback textbook which goes out to high schools and colleges in North America and is on violence in the media and children. The essay is one I wrote after the school shootings in Oregon a couple of years ago.

Some of you may know my dad lives in Utah and is as liberal as they come. It really pleased him to hear that I am in the same book, same chapter as Utah's arch-conservative Senator Orrin Hatch! Of course, I am arguing against censorship, while he would muffle the media to his liking.

There are many other things, including the Great Mudcat Adventure taking a turn at my house, but as for accomplishments, I am most proud of the above and that I started to sing on a fairly regular basis in HearMe/PalTalk.

Now, how about you?

Thanks,

kat

--Got inducted into Golden Key Honors Society
--Drove long distance for the first time by myself
--Got Confirmed and had my First Holy Communion
--Feeling comfortable singing and playing in public, and finding people to sing with

I held our first grandchild and saw generations stretch before me;
I made it through two more semesters--saw some great students graduated;
I played lead in a Ray Bradbury play which was attended by Bradbury himself;
I played a lot of music for a great many folks, and most of them seemed to like it;
Our annual "An Evening with Dr. Foster" raised a large amount of money for scholarships;
As I move within ten or so days of another birthday, I am aware that I am blessed far beyond what I deserve.

Happy Holidays, Everybody

I right in there with Bagpuss! So not losing my job was a significant accomplishment.

However, some of the highlights of 2000 for me were!

Playing my banjo and singing for the first time in public (Even if it was only at a CubScout Campfire, they can be a mean audience).

Breaking my foot!

Attending the FSGW Getaway and meeting everyone!

Getting a chapter I wrote publshed in the Institute of Transportation Engineer's new textbook "Intellgent Transportation Systems Primer" (I wrote chapter 26 on ITS and the planniing process).

Not a lot to report except I held my first granddaugter as well,, it was an amazing feeling.
celebrated my 32nd wedding anniversary in the same month as my granddaughter was born
Made it through another year without the cancer re-occuring, that makes 4 years now
worked on my family tree, now back to 1790
No one in either my family or my wife's family passed away, which is quite afeat if you knew the history and the size of our families.

Congratulations to the published authors above, it is something to be proud of.

Overall it's been a very good year.

BTW, thanks for being there for that.

1. With help at the right time from my dear wife, I moved house in a station wagon (estate car).

2. Got to be a better harmony singer during the course of the year.

3. Bought and can now knock out a couple of tunes on the button accordion... a long way to go to get the gold, however.

4. Wrote a few good melodies for some old songs.

5. Visited the sick.

6. Gave back a bit of what I've been given.

7. Toured Europe a few times with Bob Conroy returned unscathed.

8. Kept my cool a few times when I wanted to kill.

9. Comforted friends confronted with illness and death.

10. Caught more fish and drank more Guinness than Big Mick at the Getaway.

Broke up with a woman who doesn't seem quite so amazing anymore.

Like Bagpuss, I've been screwing up my job; but a new job is just around the corner.

Discovered I was following along with everyone elses chord changes and I was in tune too!!!!

Took a test jump out of the Fielding nest and miraculously my scrawny baby feathers started flapping in mid-air.

For the first time in my life I made where I live into a real home.

Became good friends with my sister.

Did not become involved with the wrong man.

Learned how to enjoy being on my own as a single person.

Learned to say no.

I learned to feel comfortable, and even enjoy singing for people. I sang in front of people I was terrified of singing in front of.

Was invited by Karen K to sing a song I'd written at a workshop. (And I didn't screw it up!)

Added a small shade garden in front of my house, and didn't kill any plants.

Took the plunge and started painting inside. The living room is becoming dark green. One day, I will actually make my house visitable. ("You want me to sit on the couch?! Which pile of stuff is the couch under?!")

Enjoyed the on-line and real world company of some truly fine people. Found joy in knowing the world is filled with people like that, but felt selfishly proud to call them friends.

First of all, I gotta say Way to Go, Kat!! Point counter point with Senator Orrin Hatch (arch conservative? I was kinda thinking Orrin was a bit pink compared to Pat Buchanan or Gary Bauer)!

Accomplishments? I reached the 30 year mark with my wife. We were 18 when we married, not old enough to know better! It was the best thing that ever happened to me, and I am greatful every day.

Found a home with Eammons Kitchen - a fine bunch of folks, and true friends with great love and skill for our brand of Celtic, Folk, Bluegrass music.

I learned to play banjo. I ain't accomplished yet, but I can't really describe myself as a guitar player pickin' a banjo anymore ...

Married off number 2 son, to a Taiwan born beauty with the spirit of a stallion and a heart of gold.

Released a CD.

Four things I can point to that stand out with pleasure this year, and one real bummer:

I began doing volunteer concerts/shows/whatever for nursing homes and senior centers. What a great feeling!

I attended MBA (Maryland Banjo Academy) for three days of banjo heaven, in April.

I was invited to do (and did) a forty-minute featured spot at the annual public folk music festival sponsored by the Central Indiana Folk Music and Mountain Dulcimer Society in July.

I did my first Mudcat Concert on HearMe on October 12th. Now THERE was a high!

MAJOR BUMMER: I haven't been able to get onto PalTalk, for reasons undiagnosed, so have been deprived of those successor sessions to HearMe. Unfortunately, PalTalk's help available to those not already on is all canned text, none of which seems to address my situation, and you can't talk to a live representative who MIGHT be able to give some help unless you're already registered and in contact.

lots of cool stuff happened this year.

I got hired to teach at Emerson College in the film studies dept. It is only adjunct part-time stuff, but it is in my field.

I spent a wonderful twelve days travelling in the UK in June. Met some great people, including one lovely young man with soulmate potential who, sadly, I never heard from again.

I spent a not-so wonderful five days travelling in the UK in October.

I was invited as a guest speaker for the Blair Witch Webfest to promote the Blair Witch sequel; they flew me out to LA and the organizers told me I was everyone'd favorite speaker of the whole three day event. While there, I hooked up with a long-distance love and had a heartbreaking time of it. Still dealing with that fallout but life goes on...

I was asked to write a book for HarperSanFrancisco, but have not had much time to devote to it.

I got laid off this week from my "day job" with 18 weeks severance pay which may well give me time to work on that book!

Musically?

I still don't have a band situation. But I am still singing and working on my repertoire and determined to do a recording project in the new year.

Happy Holly Daze!

Peg

Managed to recieve 10+ gushing Christmas newsletters all about how WONDERFUL life is, and how good Jesus has been to "hootsit's family" without replying:

"Well, we spent $5,000 to keep Luke from going to prison on a false charge. Kate is not pregnant yet, but we still have hope. We just pray that the abortion clinics will still be open when we need them. We lost our best friend to depression/suicide on Dec. 9, but the stock account has managed to tide over the extra Holiday Spending in fine style--we have only spent $10,000 on gifts this year, sorry you weren't on our list.

All the credit cards are maxed out, and sorry if we don't answer the phone, you are probably on the list of people we don't want to talk to--caller ID needs new batteries, but no one can find the time to change them, so just leave a message. Kate is not home anyway.

Our "friend" Mr. Bush was "elected" to the Presidency without our help, but I guess we are glad to hear that he has the Courts in his court." etc, etc, etc.

No, seriously, we have no major accomplishments this year, I am just thankful that all 4 of us are alive and at home. I did manage to learn 1 new tune. I'm not cynical, am I?

I almost completely resisted the temptation to work for a living (but I must confess that in a moment of weakness, I gave in and agreed to work a total of about a month, but not very hard).

I got an unpaid job that I really love - doing daycare and washing dishes one morning a week at a drop-in center for poor women and their children. Those preschool kids are so cool.

Every autumn for the last 6 years, I've driven along part of the Atlantic Coast of North America. This year, I filled in some gaps, so now I've gone from Dry Tortugas in Florida to Halifax in Nova Scotia.

I typed 17,386 blue clicky thingies, and 14,386,782 <br> line breaks.

Ah, retirement is wonderful.

Thanks kat – good time to take stock.

New Year 2000 shepherded in developments that culminated, at long last, at the beginning of November, in my moving out of the marital home into my own tiny cottage and haven of peace.

Stress / depression reappeared with return to work in September and I've been on sick leave since mid-Sept. This is giving me the opportunity to reassess mylife after 21 yrs of marriage. Don't know where I'm going- but it's going to be ME doing it.

It's sad, but also a major accomplishment- I found the confidence and courage to do what I should have done a long time ago, confidence developed in no small way due to friendship and support from friends in this wonderful place.

Noreen

Big year for me in a personal sense.

Bought my first computer and paid it off in 3 months.

Learned how to use maybe 40% of it.

Produced a demo cd of home recordings, 'The Rubes-Undisputed'

Established a number of music sites w/ mp3s.

Learned a tiny bit about self-promotion, enough to know I'm not good at it.

Received a lot of comments and criticisms about the quality or lack of it in my recordings, which was not unexpected.

Received a number of favorable comments from strangers who liked one or more of my songs even though they sounded rough, which was really the best thing that happened to me all year.

Managed to pay off the last of my debt (back taxes) which I've been buried under for ten years.

Finishing the year without extravagance, but finally debt free.

Happy Holidays to all Mudcat folks. I've found this site to be largely invigorating, although you Canadians sure do think you know it all, don't you.

1. Met an amazing array of Mudcatters.

2. Created an innovative new course that started well, and then crashed and burned when my university went on strike.

3. Discovered open tunings, Bob Dylan's bootleg recordings, and continued to marvel at Rick Fielding's patience with inquiring students.

4. Wrote the first characters of mine that ever came to life and wouldn't let go, here, over the course of a month.

5. Read John Ehrmann's 3-volume Life of Pitt the Younger.

6. Failed dismally to influence my government's policies on global warming, nuclear proliferation, and biogenetic engineering.

7. Taught Oriental thought and Zen practice to a willing student who recently sent me an e-mail from a cafe/brothel in Budapest asking about a complex problem in Hua-Yen Buddhism that was bothering him during his first bumming trip around Europe.

Did a lot of music-making, with what we now officially call a band on our one-year anniversary ("Shore Grass") and with various friends and strangers.

Visited son and daughter-in-law and many relatives in California. First time back in 30 years.

Went to 9 bluegrass festivals over the summer!

Made the huge move in October to take the early retirement offer at work. Still working (they asked me to help get the team through the end-of-year crises) but will officially move on to my next challenge in a couple of months. Tune in next year to see what that may be. . .

Kat, congratulations on getting published!

And Melani, congratulations on accomplishing something I could never do. I have tried numerous times and never managed to get above the crows nest. If I had tried for a yardarm I'd have starved to death in the rigging.

Let's see...
1) Went through a miserable, horrible pregnancy (discovered I have a mild backflow heart problem when pregant) and only missed a few days of normal life. Delivered a gorgeous baby girl on November 29 and didn't come near to dying like last time I gave birth. Made the conscious decision that if we have any more children they aren't coming through me.
2) Got and kept a job as a reporter for a local newspaper, after an entire year of jobhunting. Realized I should have stuck to my convictions as a 15 yr-old, because I was definitely born to be a journalist. And after six years of losing jobs to disappearing grants (museums and archaeological digs can be risky workplaces), I finally found a boss who wants so badly to keep me that she doesn't mind if I take a year's maternity leave.
3) Sang my first solo onstage at the Mystic Sea Music Festival. Hopefully will do more next year. Would have done more this year but was busy being miserably pregnant.

Life is good right now. Not very successful musically, as I had to take a ten-month break. That will be next year's accomplishment, I guess!

1. Got works published in a book for the first time.
2. Gained speed with a flatpick (still no Clarence White--not even Betty White)
3. Shared on HearMe and it was helping with performance jitters. Bummer within an accomplisment--shared with DaveO (must be a hoosier deal)--can't PalTalk either!

'scuse the prefix, I haven't gotten 'round to resetting the cookie here.
Let's see...accomplishments...
I graduated high school!
I worked my first professional theater.
I survived a bunch of crazy relationship issues before finally finding a really great guy at school.
I served as Props Master for the Scottish Play, my very first semester at college.
I got over my stage-fright enough to act this semester, rather than hiding out in the tech crew.
I survived my first semester of college!

Overall, I guess I'm pretty proud of myself. :)

I lived through the worst heartbreak of my life but if yesterday is any indicator that issue is not yet resolved.

Otherwise, I guess there were a few things I could be proud of. I started my own coffeehouse. My group started recording our CD. At work we were audited and after detailed interviews with customers, clients and staff and looking into our records, the audit team judged us to be the best office they had visited to date.

I'm looking forward to the new millennium.

Made a CD with Skeerwud Band and played in BBC Music Live. Went to several great festivals.

Wrote a few more topical parodies, including the Scottish version of "Swing Low" when Scotland's rugby team beat England at Murrayfield and deprived them of the "dead cert" Grand Slam that everyone had predicted: oh, and a few weeks later I got to hold the Calcutta Cup - a magnificent piece of siverware, if ever I saw one!

Sang in public a bit more including debut in the local Folk Club.

Really her achievement, not mine, but my daughter got her degree in Sports Medicine: it was a proud day going to the graduation. And my son achieved 5 Highers.

Walking in the Picos de Europa: did the Ruta del Cares both ways for the second year running, and walking through rain and fog up into sunshine to feast our eyes on the "Naranjo de Bulnes" at close quarters and look over a sea of cloud.

Surviving all this and 27 years of marriage, my father-in-law's 80th birthday, a 25 year reunion of former colleagues, etc, etc.

Looks quite rugged to me. I know I won't get an answer to this anytime soon but I wonder if it is a six mile trip one-way or round trip?

1. Successfully recovered from Fall, '99 cancer surgery. I'm minus one kidney, but cancer-free. Knock on wood. 2. Had a great visit with WyoWoman, who showed me around her corner of Colorado. 3. Went to Mystic Seaport's music festival and took in a great two days of music. Was completely blown away by the Brooklyn duo, The NexTradition. Met Liam's Brother there. 4. Organized music for a sea festival, and a sea music concert series - a true labor of love. 5. Met Joe Offer at the Festival Of The Sea. Had a Mudcat gathering there, with Joe, Riggy, Winters Wages, Melani, Elise, BSeed, Pam and Dave Swan, Radriano and new Mudcatter, Rev. 6. Joined Mudcat in late January. Many thanks to Pam and Dave Swan, who told me about it. Joining was one of my wiser decisions in life (what does that say about me?). :-)

I know this thread is mainly about just stating what we've accomplished, and not meant for discussion, but as I read what everyone has to say, I marvel at what a strong and loving bunch of folks we have here. You are all, each and every one of you, remarkable people. I lift my coffee cup (hey, it's not even 10AM here) in a toast to you!

Here's to the bridges we've burned
Here's to the corners we've turned
Here's to the pain we've survived
Here's to just staying alive

Here's to the wrongs we forgave
Here's to the works we have made
Here's to the battles we fought
And the victories won, dearly bought

Here's to success of our daughters and sons
Here's to the health of less fortunate ones
May we all live with laughter and love without fear
May we all have a Happy New Year
