Hi all, I'm wondering if you can help, I'm trying to find lyrics for a trad song from the North East of england called Show Me The Way to Wallington, and also the English translated lyrics for an Irish song called Inis Dhun Ramma. I've tried the database, and trawled the internet but no success. I start recording guide tracks for my second CD tomorrow, and am hoping to include both of these. Nothing like leaving it 'til the last minute, hey?! I'll personally thank you on the CD credits if you come up with the goods!

Bill Jones (short for Belinda)

INIS DHÚN RÁMHA

A Rí na Cruinne! gan mé 's tú i n-Iorras,
Nó thiar in Inis Dhún Rámha,
Ar bhruach na Finne le taobh na toinne,
A' féachaint loingis thar sáile!
Dá mhéad ár dtuirse 's gan aon neach againn,
Ach géag an duilliúir ár sábháil,
'S é déarfeadh gach duine gur lách ár n-imeacht,
Mar d'éalaigh Diarmuid le Gráinne.

Aréir go bhfaca mé féin in m'aisling,
Mar bheadh sí ar bhácan mo láimhe,
An spéirbhean mhaiseach mar aon bhrat sneachta,
Dá mbíodh gar coscairt a dhéanamh,
Taobh na macnaí da mbíodh in m'aice,
Mar chéile leapa gan airnéis,
'Sé 'béilín meala a leigheasfadh mo ghalar,
'S a bhéarfadh mo cholann 'un sláinte

Dá mbeinn 'mo bharún ní dhéanfainn dabhar,
Ar spré bó, capall nó caorach,
Dá bhfaighainnse 'n ainnir 'na suí le m'aice,
Nó í 'na seasamh go haerach,
Tá gné ar a craiceann mil' uair níos taithmhí,
Ná éirí maiseach na gréine,
'S ní bréag a chanaim ach 's fíor a n-abraim,
Gurab í ' thug mais' ar gach maighdean.

Oh King of The Universe! If only we could be in Erris,
Or west in Inis Dhún Rámha,
By the banks of the Finne or the sea itself,
Looking at ships going abroad,
Tired though we may be and all alone,
With only the leafy branches to protect us,
All would say that we eloped beautifully,
Like the lovers of old, Diarmad and Gráinne.

Last night she appeared to me in a dream,
As though she was in the fold of my arm,
A maiden as lovely as a blanket of snow,
At the time of its thawing.
Were she now by my side,
And we wedded as one,
Her honey lips would cure my sickness,
And bring my body back to health.

If I were a baron, I wouldn't look for a dowry,
Of cows, horses or sheep,
Had I my love sitting beside me,
Or standing merrily in front of me,
Her skin has a sheen more radiant,
Than the rays of the rising sun,
I tell no lie, but truly I state,
That she is the finest of maidens.

Conrad Bladey posted Shew's the Way to Wallington earlier this year, here:  Shew's The Way to Wallington.  He didn't give any source or information, though, so I will add those to that thread.

Malcolm

Hey, welcome, Bill! Heard you singing on the radio a while back. Good to think of Mudcatters being able to help you on to even greater things!

Let us know when the CD comes out?

Noreen
