Subject: RE: Tom Waits on 'Austin City Limits' From: GUEST Date: 03 Apr 11 - 07:51 AM Wm. Buckley wasn't a co-host, just a guest. See http://www.belairjazz.org/id31.html and scroll down to Tom Waits. I was there. |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: dwditty Date: 25 Dec 00 - 07:11 PM Before I saw him live, I once saw Tom Waits as a guest on the Dinah Shore Show of all places. The guest co-host for the week was William F. Buckley. After Tom sang Waltzing Matilda, the three sat around and talked. All the while, Tom was fumbling for and then lighting and smoking a Camel cigarette. What I remember most was how Tom cracked up Buckley every time he opened his mouth. A few years later, I saw Tom solo in a small venue in Northampton, MA. Been a fan ever since. dw |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: GUEST,YUM YUM Date: 25 Dec 00 - 03:11 PM SARAH, you know what they say, 'TOM WAITS - for no man!' sorry, it's the CHRISTMAS-SPIRIT (BUSH) HAVE A GOOD CHRISTMAS EVERYONE ... YUM YUM |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: GUEST,Sarah Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:50 PM Gotta admit, some of his stuff is funny. Even riotous, albiet a lot of it in a twisted sort of way: Remember "Frank's Wild Years"? (They were so happy...) And "Better Off Without a Wife"? Especially the intro! And if ya love a good dirge, as I do, particularly a dirge with that greasy back-alley feel, Waits is your man. I do really enjoy his stuff, used to do "In the Neighborhood" and (one of my all-time faves) "Sight for Sore Eyes." The thing that really grips me about the latter is that its first verse is composed almost entirely of hackneyed phrases, yet sets up a tragedy with casual perfection. But I still like him best in small doses. I guess I'm just too sensitive...(yeah, right.) Sarah |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: Matt_R Date: 24 Dec 00 - 06:31 PM I sang "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" for my girlfriend and she cried. Well....actually we both did. |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: Murray MacLeod Date: 24 Dec 00 - 06:07 PM I have always loved Tom Waits' song "San Diego Serenade". It is just one of the most sensitive, bitter-sweet love songs ever written. Murray |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: GUEST,Mickey191 Date: 24 Dec 00 - 05:24 PM Sarah, your right that sometimes Tom can be a downer, but I will always remember the first time I saw Tom Waites. There was a spin-off of Mary Hartman called Fernwood, Tonight with Martin Mull doing the Johnny Carson part, and Tom was one of the guests. He was absolutely hilarious, bought the house down with his adlibs. He then played the piano and sang,(can't remember what) and was even funnier. Guess he was more upbeat then. I still enjoy him though. |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: GUEST,Sarah Date: 24 Dec 00 - 11:07 AM Allan, This is one I wished I'd taped when I first saw it. I'll agree about Waits' presentation: He's the kind of Blues writer who can really make you want to go home and open a vein before the night's over. I like his stuff better when done by someone else. But I'll make the video and play a little, then stop and come back later to play a little more. Otherwise I become more and more depressed and cynical. Neither Waits nor his music is likely to raise my already low opinion of mankind. Sarah |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: Allan C. Date: 24 Dec 00 - 10:37 AM I guess it all depends on your means of getting the show. Tom was on my satellite stations last night. I have to say that I enjoyed his poetry; but QUICKLY tired of his presentation. |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: GUEST,Sarah Date: 24 Dec 00 - 10:31 AM Update: My TV Guide Online has Tom Waits scheduled for December 30th, for those who, as did I, came home to find they'd taped Joe Cocker last night... Sarah |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: Allan C. Date: 23 Dec 00 - 05:06 PM Yeah, I appreciate it. I saw the listing and told myself that I should know that name from somewhere, but CRS kicked in and I didn't know why I should bother to watch it. Now I know. |
Subject: RE: tom waits/ From: GUEST,Sarah Date: 23 Dec 00 - 04:59 PM Thanks, thosp! Will set the video tape: I'd'a'missed it without you. (Exit, humming, "In the neighborhood, in the neighborhood, in the neigh-bor-hood...") Sarah |
