Here is the site http://cgi.eBay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?viewItem&item=526592700&r=0&showtutorial=0&ed=977686065&indexURL=0&rd=1 Sorry, but, I still havn't learned to do the blue click thing yet.I dont even know if you need the whole string or not. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:10 AM Apparently all that gobbledegook is not necessary... all you need is: eBay item 526592700 |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:11 AM Okay Kendall.....here's a clicky using the addy you gave: Kendall's Complimentary Blue Clicky Is he still making those things out of balsa wood and rubber cement? Gotta' admit that the latex house paint finish is a nice touch................ Spaw |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Allan C. Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:13 AM Mighty purty! But I think it might take a wee bit longer than five hours for me to scrape up that kind of money. Too bad. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:24 AM Let me tell you a story. I often use this when someone wants me to drive a 100 miles and perform all evening for $50.00. Fable of the oats If you want to buy oats, you have two choices, Nice, top quality oats will command a premium price. However, if you can settle for those that have gone through the horse.. They are MUCH cheaper. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:29 AM Oh I get it now Kendall! In other words, a vintage Martin is real horse manure and oughta' be cheap! I might be inclined to agree to some extent but overall, I think you got a big argument on your hands here! (:<)) Spaw |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Allan C. Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:39 AM Didn't say I thought it wasn't worth it, Kendall. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Rick Fielding Date: 24 Dec 00 - 01:05 PM Well I do. I've played several Nick guitars, and have been very impressed by their clarity and volume. Almost bought one of his 12 strings about 8 years ago. It was touch and go, but he'd used Gibson Hummingbird appointments (not his usual design) and that's a visual look i was never keen on, so I passed on it. His 12s are exceptionally light and powerful sounding especially when tuned low. I've usually tuned mine wayyyy down to "B" (I put an octave on the 2nd pair!) and when I did this to Sandy Paton's Nick 12 string, it sounded like a freight train. Yup their fine instruments all right. Rick |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 24 Dec 00 - 01:30 PM I dont remember even mentioning Martin? All I said was, if you want the best, you must be prepared to dig deep. Vintage Martins dont come cheap either. Why are Martin owners so sensitive? Is it because Taylor is nipping at their heels? |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: dwditty Date: 24 Dec 00 - 04:23 PM Congrats Dick, on a fine guitar purchase. dw |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: dick greenhaus Date: 24 Dec 00 - 05:21 PM Got it. I've been drooling over this instrument since I tried it at the Champlain Valley Festival, and this auction gave me a bit of a goose. Looking forward to getting it! Thanx Ken. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 24 Dec 00 - 06:40 PM I love to pass on good news! |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:18 PM Thanks for the link Spaw. Someday I will learn how to do those. That will take some pressure off you in your declining years! |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:33 PM Ya' know, I just love ribbin' you Kendall and I ain't got a Martin anymore either! And you're right, its nice to have something to fall back on as we go over the hill.......sadly in your case, its just lookin' "spiffy" with Joe Offer (see the Barry's Party Pix thread). But Merry Christmas anyway you old coot. And Dick....Congrats on a fine purchase!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 24 Dec 00 - 09:35 PM And a merry one to you spaw. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Rick Fielding Date: 24 Dec 00 - 10:07 PM And what I MEANT was..I AGREE, rather than "Well I DO" which implied that Allan said he DIDN'T think it was worth it...which of course he didn't...imply that is...oh fuckit! Congrats Dick, let us know what it sounds like Rick (vintage Martin owner without a shred of sensitivity) |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Dec 00 - 10:11 PM Geeziz Rick....Are you chuggin' on the spirits of Christmas or what? Merry one to you and Boots too my friend and layabout partner. Maybe we can have another board meeting with full attendance this coming year. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: dick greenhaus Date: 24 Dec 00 - 11:21 PM I spent an hour or so playing it last August--I don't buy instruments without trying them. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 25 Dec 00 - 02:49 AM Hi guys! Merry Christmas! I'm up late stuffing stockings and getting hammered on egg-nog. Kendall, is this the same Nick Appolonio who used to play mandolin on the radio in the 30's and 40's? If it is, I got a copy of an old radio show that he was on, and I think he shits marmalade!! The guy is brilliant. And so are you, and so is Spaw, and so is Rick, and so is Dick, and so is Joe, and so is dwditty. And to all a good night. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 25 Dec 00 - 09:14 AM No, I'm afraid this Nick is too young to have been doing much of anything in the 40's! Nevertheless, he is still an outstanding musician as well as a great luthier. He really is an undiscovered gem. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 25 Dec 00 - 04:32 PM Congratulations Dick..it's nice to know a man who has such exquisite taste in instruments. I predict you will be very happy with an Apollonio guitar. I certainly am. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: dick greenhaus Date: 25 Dec 00 - 07:53 PM Thank 'ee Ken. I have exquisite tase in everything! Just don't always exercise it |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 26 Dec 00 - 12:17 AM Uh oh! In the clear light of day, egg-nog free, I think I meant Dave Appolon last night. Well, ain't I the dumb one? Sorry, Kendall, and congratulations Dick. All the best, Seamus |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 26 Dec 00 - 12:29 PM His name is Nikos, not Dave |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Rick Fielding Date: 26 Dec 00 - 12:36 PM Dave Appollon, Wow, haven't heard THAT name in a while. What an AMAZING mandolin player. When I first heard him it was a revelation. I highly reccommend anyone interested in the instrument check out his many recordings. Although Jethro Burns often cited Paul Buskirk as the "best" he'd heard, he once wrote that "Appollon" had fingers like lightening". Rick |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 26 Dec 00 - 02:41 PM Rick, how about Howard Frye? I used to have an LP of his Gypsy Mandolin Music around. Must see if I can dig it out. Kendall, sorry for the confusion. My fault - I was mixing up Nick Appolonio with Dave Apollon. I'm afraid I was making rather merry sir....and it only happens once a year. Happy new year. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: dick greenhaus Date: 26 Dec 00 - 03:42 PM Some idle thoughts-- 45 years ago, almost to the day, I bought a new Volkswagen. It cost, almost to the dollar, what I paid for the guitar. Value? I don't know. I loved the VW, and expect to love the guitar. The VW got me places, but it only lasted six years; I expect a lot longer sevice from, the guitar. On the plus side, the guitar provides better gas mileage, and doesn't pollute the air as much. And, if I consider inflation, the guitar seems like more of a bargain. |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Dec 00 - 04:37 PM Geeziz Dick.....You bought a '55 V-Dub? Not the earliest of course, but you were still pretty well in on the ground floor.......which is something that fell out of the Bugs after a few years. There are some similarities though......your new 12 and a VW.
Neither has a heater that works. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Rick Fielding Date: 26 Dec 00 - 06:21 PM Well Seamus, I'm not going going to stand for it anymore! You leave me no choice but to.....................RAISE YOUR SALARY! Now go out and buy a new coal scuttle, before you play another note! Alistair Sim |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 27 Dec 00 - 01:38 AM Rick! You da MAN! Alistair (Scrooge) Sim RULES!! Seamus |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Luke Date: 27 Dec 00 - 10:20 AM You folks don't really know me or my music or if I can play a lick but, I'm just gonna tell y'all. Nick Apollonio makes great instruments. They are loud , clear and light. He knows what he's doing. I played his 12 stringer last summer and it sounds great playing all kinds of music. A problem I have with guitars is they want to bottom out when you push them. Nick's will not. The harder you push the harder they play. I will never forget what an old friend told me "you can make a loud guitar play sweet but never make a sweet guitar play loud."

Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 27 Dec 00 - 12:37 PM Another man of great taste |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 28 Dec 00 - 02:20 AM Luke, that's almost deep, man. Nice words. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Apollonio guitar on eBay From: kendall Date: 28 Dec 00 - 09:46 AM It's the same with women ,Luke.. (Kendall, trying to start something) |
