Subject: lyrics for the 'bicycle song' From: GUEST,Lisa Date: 24 Dec 00 - 02:35 PM Hi! I'm hoping someone out there can help me with the lyrics to a song. It's about a guy who's riding his bicycle and his chain breaks and then several verses follow with other mishaps, etc. I don't know the name of it and I can't remember any complete lines from it, but if any of you know this song I would appreciate your help! Thanks, Lisa |
Subject: RE: lyrics for the 'bicycle song' From: Lin in Kansas Date: 24 Dec 00 - 04:56 PM From Lin's lesser half John in Kansas: I'm bootlegging her connection, which she left carelessly turned on. Please don't blame her. I think that the song you are looking for was a '50s era Homer and Jethro parody - of a 'truck driver' parody of "The Wreck of Old '97." The trucker song may have been "Lickskillet Pass," which was popular about the same time? The tune is roughly the one used by the Kingston Trio's "M.T.A." The only lines I can partially remember are something about: Goin' down the hill doin' 90 miles an hour, when the chain on my/his? bicycle broke And one something like: Tried to slow it down with a foot on the tire but ... toes got tangled up with the spokes. Fun song, but - the memories one of the first to go...

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BICYCLE SONG From: GUEST Date: 28 Aug 06 - 03:00 PM Traditional version as sung by the late Tom Lenihan of County Clare ^^ THE BICYCLE SONG 1. You talk about having a bicycle hump, I got a bicycle pip. I bought a beautiful safety one; And on my very first trip, I ran right in to an old, old woman, I nearly mangled a kid. The crowd all gathered around me, And what do you think they did? Chorus They first took hold of my handlebars, They twisted my diamond frame. They pulled out the end of the patent valve And it never will look the same. They burst my bearings, they bent my fork, Somebody smashed my chain. They took all the wind from my inner tube And I never will ride again. 2. They told me my saddle was puncture-proof, They pulled out the wick of my lamp. They started in trying to ring the bell, And my gear-wheel got a cramp. I started in trying to stop my bell, The pump went into a drain. They took all the oil from my oil can And I'm damned if I'll ride again! Chorus 3. They bored a hole through my Dunlop tyre, They smashed my detachable brake, They stuck a spanner between the spokes And my squeaker they tried to take. They spoiled the shape of my rustless wrench, My pump went into a drain, They took all the oil from my oilcan And I'm damned if I'll ride again. Chorus Best, Jim Carroll |

Subject: Lyr Add: LET'S HAVE A RIDE ON YOUR BICYCLE From: Rusty Dobro Date: 31 Aug 06 - 02:44 PM And from the Music Halls: ^^ LET'S HAVE A RIDE ON YOUR BICYCLE When I was a lad, I was bicycle-mad, I rode in between motor cars. But make no mistake, I could put on the brake Without touching my handlebars. But I gave up biking, went hiking instead, To a girl on a bike in the country I said, Ch: Let's have a ride on your bicycle, Let's have a ride on your bike, She put her bicycle under a tree, I think that girl took a fancy to me, She said to me as we both sat down, 'Tell me, what would you like?' I said, 'My dear, if there's nobody near, I'd like ride on your bike! Ch: After the ride I began to perspire, It wasn't the ride, I'd been pumping her tyre. I said to her as she rode away, 'Come back whenever you like, But don't tell your husband when you get back home, I've had a ride on your bike!' |

Subject: Lyr Add: MULGA BILL'S BICYCLE (Banjo Paterson) From: Rowan Date: 11 Dec 07 - 07:41 PM And, via Dale Rose (0.8912 - Thread - Message - RE: Help: Oz: Mulga Bill's Bicycle Band - Jan 7 2001 8:14PM). we have ^^ MULGA BILL'S BICYCLE by A.B. "Banjo" Paterson, 1864-1941 First published in The Sydney Mail, 25 July 1896 'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze; He turned away the good old horse that served him many days; He dressed himself in cycling clothes, resplendent to be seen; He hurried off to town and bought a shining new machine; And as he wheeled it through the door, with air of lordly pride, The grinning shop assistant said, "Excuse me, can you ride?" "See here, young man," said Mulga Bill, "from Walgett to the sea, From Conroy's Gap to Castlereagh, there's none can ride like me. I'm good all round at everything as everybody knows, Although I'm not the one to talk - I hate a man that blows. But riding is my special gift, my chiefest, sole delight; Just ask a wild duck can it swim, a wildcat can it fight. There's nothing clothed in hair or hide, or built of flesh or steel, There's nothing walks or jumps, or runs, on axle, hoof, or wheel, But what I'll sit, while hide will hold and girths and straps are tight: I'll ride this here two-wheeled concern right straight away at sight." 'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that sought his own abode, That perched above Dead Man's Creek, beside the mountain road. He turned the cycle down the hill and mounted for the fray, But 'ere he'd gone a dozen yards it bolted clean away. It left the track, and through the trees, just like a silver streak, It whistled down the awful slope towards the Dead Man's Creek. It shaved a stump by half an inch, it dodged a big white-box: The very wallaroos in fright went scrambling up the rocks, The wombats hiding in their caves dug deeper underground, As Mulga Bill, as white as chalk, sat tight to every bound. It struck a stone and gave a spring that cleared a fallen tree, It raced beside a precipice as close as close could be; And then as Mulga Bill let out one last despairing shriek It made a leap of twenty feet into the Dead Man's Creek. 'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that slowly swam ashore: He said, "I've had some narrer shaves and lively rides before; I've rode a wild bull round a yard to win a five-pound bet, But this was the most awful ride that I've encountered yet. I'll give that two-wheeled outlaw best; it's shaken all my nerve To feel it whistle through the air and plunge and buck and swerve. It's safe at rest in Dead Man's Creek, we'll leave it lying still; A horse's back is good enough henceforth for Mulga Bill." Cheers, Rowan |

And a bell what gives warning to you, An old fashioned saddle that I used to straddle, When the toil of the long day was through, It had no Dunlop tyres, it just rolled on the rims, But there's something what makes it divine, Oa a cobble-stoned hill you can get quite a thrill, On an old fashioned Pushbike like mine! Subject: Lyr Add: THE GOL-DARNED WHEEL (from Lomax) From: dick greenhaus Date: 31 Dec 07 - 03:35 PM THE GOL-DARNED WHEEL I can take the wildest bronco in the tough old woolly West; I can ride him, I can break him, let him do his level best. I can handle any cattle ever wore a coat of hair, And I've had a lively tussle with a tarnal grizzly bear. I can rope and throw the longhorn of the wildest Texas brand And in Indian disagreements I can play a leading hand, But at last I got my master and he surely made me squeal When the boys got me astraddle of that gol-darned wheel. It was at the Eagle Ranch, on the Brazos, when I fust Found that darned contrivance that upset me in the dust. A tenderfoot had brought it, he was wheeling all the way From the sunrise end of freedom out to San Francisco Bay. He tied up at the ranch for to get outside a meal, Never thinkin' we would monkey with his gol-darned wheel Arizona Jim begun it when he said to Jack McGill There was fellows forced to limit bragging on their riding skill And he'd venture the admission the same fellow that he meant Was a very handy cutter far as riding broncos went; But he would find that he was bucking 'gainst a different kind of deal If he threw his leather leggins 'gainst a gol-darned wheel. Such a slam against my talent made me hotter than a mink And I vowed that I would ride it for amusement or for chink. And it was nothing but a plaything for the kids and such about, And they'd have their ideas shattered if they'd lead the critter out. They held it while I mounted and gave the word to go; The shove they gave to start me warn't unreasonably slow. But I never spilled a cuss word and I never spilled a squeal- I was building reputation on that gol-darned wheel. Holy Moses and the Prophets, how we split the Texas air, And the wind it made whip-crackers of my same old canthy hair, And I sorta comprehended as down the hill we went There was bound to be a smash-up that I couldn't well prevent. Oh, how them punchers bawled, "Stay with her, Uncle Bill! Stick your spurs in her, you sucker! Turn her muzzle up the hills!" But I never made an answer, I just let the cusses squeal, I was finding reputation on that gol-darned wheel. The grade was mighty sloping from the ranch down to the creek, And I went a-galliflutin' like a crazy lightning streak- Went whizzing and a-darting first this way and then that, The darned contrivance sort o' wabbling like the flying of a bat. I pulled upon the handles, but I couldn't check it up; And I yanked and sawed and hollered but the darned thing wouldn't stop Then a sort of a meachin' in my brain began to steal That the devil held a mortgage on that gol-darned wheel. I've a sort of dim and hazy remembrance of the stop, With the world a-goin' 'round and the stars all tangled up; Then there came an intermission that lasted till I found I was lying at the ranch with the boys all gathered round, And the doctor was a-sewing on the skin where it was ripped, And old Arizona whispered, "Well, old boy, I guess you're whipped." And I told him I was busted from sombrero down to heel, And he grinned and said, "You ought to see that gol-darned wheel" From Cowboy songs, Lomax @cowboy @contest filename[ GDWHEEL |

Only I have some more to add some more as incomplete as it is. A farmer who has fathered many children is responding to a question by a neighbour Now you've got all your kids And I can't get one. Won't you please tell to me, Won't you say how it's done? I gets up at six when I hear the alarm And after I've milked all the cows on the farm. I go for a ride on my bicycle I get around on my bike... .... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Bicycle Song From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Feb 09 - 02:38 AM I heard a version of the above parodies about forty-five years ago, when I was doing long-distance bicycling; but I don't remember it. It was similar, and the "sprocket up the ass" stuck in my mind as an experience I would not like to have. I added the title and attribution to the Guest post of the lyrics to "Bicycle Wreck." At http://www.cowboylyrics.com, the song is called "Bicycle Song." Other sources say the song was recorded by the Jacoby Brothers and by "Uncle Andy." I gather that the Jacoby Brothers and Uncle Andy recorded the song in the late 1950's, and I heard the parodies just a few years later. Whilst working for the illustrious firm of J.Murphy, Cable Contractors of Store Street, London back in 1973, one of my navvy colleagues, an Irish fellow rejoicing under the name of 'Tip' Delaney would suddenly, and for no imaginable reason save for the joy of being alive, break into the song "When I was a lad I was bicycle mad, I would ride between motorcars, and make no mistake I would put on the brake, without touching the handlebars". I urged him to sing more but that was all he could remember. I never discovered the rest of the lyrics, not, that is until now. What a resource this is! |

It's got a basket, a bell that rings And things to make it look good. I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it. You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world. I'll give you anything, everything if you want things. I've got a cloak it's a bit of a joke. There's a tear up the front. It's red and black. I've had it for months. If you think it could look good, then I guess it should. You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world. I'll give you anything, everything if you want things. I know a mouse, and he hasn't got a house. I don't know why I call him Gerald. He's getting rather old, but he's a good mouse. You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world. I'll give you anything, everything if you want things. I've got a clan of gingerbread men. Here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men. Take a couple if you wish. They're on the dish. You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world. I'll give you anything, everything if you want things. I know a room full of musical tunes. Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork. Let's go into the other room and make them work. Tim Radford |
