Good heavens, Ella, I don't know what went wrong with your search, though I expect you didn't realise that the usual spelling is Allandale.  I found lots of references; it's one of those songs that people ask about here quite regularly.  So far as I can tell, all recordings by Revival singers derive originally from the Copper Family version, though some of them have played around with the words and melody a bit, not always very successfully.  Barry Finn refers to a number of other songs in the same vein, which may or may not be related.  These two links are your best bet:

Sweet Rose of Allandale,  with midi.  No source specified; possibly Jean Redpath.  She learnt the song from Nic Jones, who learnt it from the Coppers.

Lyrics for Rose of Allendale?  -includes a number of analogous songs, and mentions copies of songsheets at the Bodleian library and copies of the original Charles Jefferys/S. Nelson sheetmusic at the Lester Levy Collection.

It's really more useful, I think, to identify helpful links to existing resources than automatically to post a set of lyrics yet again, particularly when, with the best will in the world, they contain a lot of mistakes.

Malcolm

It's also in DigiTrad. which could save considerable typing. Once again, names don't always have predictable spellings; iff you search for [Rose of Al*] (where the square brackets indicate a phrase and the asterisk means that it's a wild card) you'll find it easily.

This is a great song and Seamus Kennedy does a wonderful version of it on his "Favorite Selections" album.

Is this the right version Ella?

SWEET ROSE OF ALLANDALE

The sky was clear, the morn was fair
Not a breath came over the sea
When Mary left her highland home
And wandered forth with me
Though flowers decked the mountainside
And fragrance filled the vale
By far the sweetest flower there
Was the rose of Allandale.

Chorus
Sweet rose of Allandale
Sweet rose of Allandale
By far the sweetest flower there
Was the rose of Allandale.

Where'er I wander to the east and to the west
And fate began to lower
A solace still was she to me
In sorrow's lonely hour
Though tempest wreck my lonely barque
And may rend the quivering sail
One maiden warm withstood the storm
'Twas the rose of Allandale. Chorus

And when my feeble lips were parched
On Africa's burning sands
She whispered hopes of happiness
And tales of foreign lands
My life had been a wilderness
Unblessed by fortune's gales
Had fate not linked my lot to her
Sweet rose of Allandale.

Hi...

I did the forum search thingy, and all the links led to dead ends, and the pages were out of date.

So, please could someone let me know the lyrics to the song The Rose of Allendale.

Thanks in anticipation...

Regards Ella
