Subject: The Drover's Boy - Check This Out.
From: Bugsy
Date: 30 Oct 00 - 07:54 PM

I posted this link on the "Poor Fellow My Country" Thread but feel it's worth a thread of it's own.

Ted is a great Australian, and a prolific songwriter with a wonderful feel for Australia and it's multicultural society.

At the moment he is trying very hard to raise money to finance a film project called "The Drover's Boy" the idea for the film being taken from his song of the same name and the script being written by his lady Nerys. It promises to be a wonderful film but he is getting very little(read NO) assistance from the Australian Film Board, and is a couple of Mil short of his target of AUS$7.5M. The money so far raised being from friends, fans and supporters.

Subject: 'The Drover's Boy' PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!
From: Ruthie A
Date: 29 Dec 00 - 05:02 PM

I saw Nacy Kerr and James Fagin in concert a few weeks ago, and they did a really gorgeous song tht they haven't yet recorded. I REALLY like it - it's called 'The Drover's Boy'. It's quite contemporary and I think that a film is being made or recently has been made based on the song. As far as I can remember, it was about native Australian women who were kidnapped and forced to dress themselves up as boys to work alongside and be the lovers of the white British drovers. I think a bit went: 'Nobody knew why the drover and the boy camped so far away For the tall white man and the slim black boy had never had much to say'

and it could well have started with: 'Nobody knew why the drover cried...'

If anybody has any information on this song, please help. I love it. Thanks! Ruthie :o)

Hi Ruthie,

It's written by Ted Egan, and it is being made into a film. It's about one specific drover and an Aboriginal woman who fell in love and she travelled with him dressed as a boy, not about a general practice.

There were some comments about this song and movie not long ago in another thread.

THE DROVER'S BOY by Ted Egan

They couldn't understand why the drover cried
As they buried the drover's boy.
The Drover had always seemed so hard, to the men in his employ
A bolting horse, the stirrup lost,
And the drover's boy was dead
The shovelled dirt, a mumbled word,
And it's back to the road ahead;
And forget about the drover's boy;
Forget about the drover's boy.

And they couldn't understand why the drover cut
The lock of the dead boy' s hair
And put it in the band of his battered old hat
As they watched him standing there
And he told them to take the cattle on
I'll sit with the boy a while
A silent thought, a pipe to smoke
And it's ride another mile
And forget about the drover's boy
Forget about the drover's boy.

And they couldn't make out why the drover and the boy
Always camped so far away
For the tall white man and the slim black boy
Never had much to say
And the boy would be gone at the break of dawn
Tail the horses, carry on
While the drover roused the sleeping men
Daylight – hit the road again
And follow the drover's boy, and follow the drover's boy.

In the Camooweal Pub they talked about
The death of the drover's boy
They drank their rum with the stranger who'd come
From the Kimberley run, Fitzroy
And he told of the massacre in the west
Barest details – guess the rest
Shoot the bucks, grab a gin
Cut her hair, break her in
And call he a boy – the drover's boy, and call he a boy – the drover's boy.

So when they build that stockman's hall of fame
And they talk about the droving game
Remember the girl who was bedmate and guide
Rode with the drover side by side
Watched the bullocks, flayed the hide,
Faithful wife but never bride,
Bred his sons for the cattle run
But don't weep for the drover's boy, don't mourn for the drover's boy,
But don't get the drover's boy.

G'day ('ee there?) Ickle Ruthie,

Here are the words as first published in Mulga Wire / Singabout in 1983. I was surprised that I didn't have the words on file ... and that I sing it a little differently from this set of words. I guess I learned it from later recordings - not from my dubious typing [the reason for the (~)].

I will post these words here, so that you have them. I may check back against some other versions (Ted's singing on later recordings) and possibly post them as a new lyric thread ... with a MIDIText of the tune.

BTW: I would have to slightly niggle about Helen's not about a general practice. It was unfortunately not a one-off occurrence in the frontier regions of the Australian Outback.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Couldn't understand why the drover cried
As they buried the drover's boy
For the drover had always seemed so hard
To the men in his employ
A falling horse
A stirrup lost
And the drover's boy was dead
Shovelled dirt and a mumbled word
And it's back to the road ahead
And forget about the drover's boy.

Couldn't understand why the drover cut
A lock of the dead boy's hair
Put it in the band of his battered old hat
As they watched him standing there
And he told them "Take the cattle on
I'll sit with the boy awhile"
In silence thought, piped a smoke
And it's ride another mile
And forget about the drover's boy.

They couldn't make out why the drover and the boy
Always camped so far away
For the tall white main and the slim black boy
Had never had much to say
And the boy would be gone at break of dawn
Tail the horses
Carry on
While the drover roused the sleeping men
Daylight - hit the road again
And follow the drover's boy
Follow the drover's boy.
(Wail)

In the Camooweal pub they talked about
The death of the drover's boy
They drank their rum with the stranger who'd come
From the Kimberley round Fitzroy
And he told of the massacre in the west
Barest details - guessed the rest
Shoot the bucks - grab a gin
Cut her hair - break her in
And call her a boy,
The Drover's boy, The Drover's boy
And call her a boy the drover's boy.
(Wail)

So when they build that Stockmen's Hall of Fame
And they talk about the droving game
Remember the girl who was bedmate and guide
Rode with the drover side by side

Faithful wife but never a bride
Bred his sons

Don't weep for the drover's boy
Don't mourn for the drover's boy
But don't forget the drover's boy.

The (Wail) is a 4 or 8 bar refrain that is hard to score. I will see what I can do.

G'day again,

I see that Richard Bridge came in with another version while I was off scanning pages. I don't think that there is any definitive version, even if we stick to Ted's performances. The song is felt so personally that it comes out differently every time. That is why I was so vague about the 'wailed' refrain ... its length and shape seem different every time I hear it.

Bob Bolton

Bob, mine is from a book called "Selections from the Great Australian Songbook", ISBN 0 949789 77 1, seemingly Australina in origin, but your words are much better, even though the differences are small.

I heard James Fagin sing this song towards the end of what was basically a traditional music summer school in Durham City (UK)this summer.

The whole point of his singing the song in these surroundings was because "the drovers boy" scenario regularly occured and the issues involved had generally been avoided until recent times.

The performance was very very well received. G.Broon

G'day again,

Richard Bridge: I think that was a commercial publication of a year or two back, but I have not seen a copy. I know I have some older publications that seemed to pretty much use the version that Mark Tainsh transcribed for me in 1983, after the song won our "Best Original Song" category at the 1983 Bush Music Festival.

I have doubts that the words are exactly what I have sung, but I need to get out some Ted Egan recordings and check Ted's own words. If anyone wants the tune, I will convert my music program version to MIDIText and post it ... sometime later.

Bob Bolton

G'day again,

This was requested in another thread by "Ickle Ruthie" and a couple of versions of the words posted there. I have refined this by checking some versions and I'm fairly happy with this version (and it's pretty typical of the way Ted Egan sings it).

I have also posted the MIDIText of the tune ... in it different forms for different verses and with the refrain for the 3rd to 5th verses.

THE DROVERS BOY
Words & Music: Ted Egan © 1982

They couldn't understand why the drover cried
As they buried the drover's boy,
For the drover had always seemed so hard
To the men in his employ,
A bolting horse, a stirrup lost
And the drover's boy was dead.
The shovelled dirt and a mumbled word
And it's back to the road ahead
And forget about the drover's boy.

They couldn't understand why the drover cut
A lock of the dead boy's hair.
He put it in the band of his battered old hat
As they watched him standing there.
He told them "Take the cattle on
I'll sit with the boy awhile"
A silent thought, a pipe to smoke
And it's ride another mile
And forget about the drover's boy.

They couldn't make out why the drover and the boy
Always camped so far away,
For the tall white man and the slim black boy
Had never had much to say
And the boy would be gone at break of dawn
Tail the horses, carry on
While the drover roused the sleeping man
"Daylight - hit the road again"
And follow the drover's boy
(Follow the drover's boy.)
Voice: Mm ... Ah, ...

In the Camooweal pub they talked about
The death of the drover's boy.
They drank their rum with the stranger who'd come
From the Kimberley run, Fitzroy
And he told of the massacre in the west
Barest detail, guess the rest
Shoot the bucks, grab a gin
Cut her hair, break her in
And call her a boy, the Drover's boy,
(The Drover's boy
And call her a boy the drover's boy.)
Voice: Mm ... Ah, ...

So when they build that Stockman's Hall of Fame
And they talk about the droving game;
Remember the girl who was bedmate and guide
Rode with the drover side by side
Watched the bullocks flayed the hide
Faithful wife, but never a bride
Bred his sons for the cattle runs
Don't weep for the drover's boy
Don't mourn for the drover's boy
But don't forget ... the drover's boy.
Voice: Mm ... Ah, ...

The MIDIText that I have included has three different verses, representing the way Ted sings this song. The first verse has 2-bars of rests at the ends of each of the two double lines. The second verse omits these rest bars (as do the succeeding verses).

The last three verses have a wordless refrain. The sections (after verses 3, 4 & 5) marked "Voice: Mm ... Ah, ..." are a quietly 'lilted 16 bar refrain ... The "Mm ..." goes for 10 bars and the "Ah ..." goes for 6 bars. You probably need to be hear it sung to get it right.

I first heard this song when I was visiting Australia in 1990 I thought then, and still do, what a wonderful song it was but I gathered from my Aussie relatives that Ted wasn't too popular for reminding Australians about something they would rather forget.

I was heartened earlier in the year by the Aussie governments apology to its aboriginal people.
