I got interested in internet radio because the station here that I would like to listen to (Fordham University in New York City) can be difficult to get via broadcast. Over the last few days, I've come upon a website that is a directory of world radio stations that are available on-line... http://www.radio-stations.net/

I know Clare FM in Ireland has traditional music on Fridays. I wonder what other stations in Ireland and in the UK have folk music on a regular basis.

Hi Dan! Check out Downtown Radio in Northern Ireland! Tommy Sands does a WONDERFUL show on Saturday evenings from 6-8, I believe. Enjoy!!

also on Downtown, Maurice Leyden with Fokal POint, Sun 10-11 pm UK/Irish time. Raidio na Gaeltachta has a lot of music, especially Béal Maidine 7-9 am Sat/Sun, also programmes most evenings at 7 pm. Raidio nan Gaidheal (BBC) also has some folk and BBC Radio Scotland has good programmes, esp. Travelling Folk, including a long slot on Sat nights. Mike Harding is on BBC radio 2 Wed 8-9 pm. I don't know if BBC Radio Ulster is on line; Colm Sands presents a folk programme Sat 10-12 pm. I think PJ Curtis has the world music programme I came across by chance a couple of times; maybe he or someone else can give details.
How odd that you have to listen to internet radio because you can't get local WFUV!
I remember reading an early science fiction book called Looking Backwards. The wireless hadn't been invented yet, but the author "invented" radio programmes via telephone.

Is England the only country in the world whose broadasters will not celebrate their own musical tradition and heritage? The Mike Harding show mentioned above is the only BBC offering. English traditional music is occassionally played on the show but far more American and Irish music is heard.

THere used to be a folk music programme on Radio Kent, and one on Radio Essex, but they wound up mostly playing singer-songwriters, Irish and American. Hardly any traditional ENglish, and when there was it was diddly tunes.

Try RTE.ie almost any day. On Friday nights you've got Aine Hensey's Late Session @22.02. On Saturday evening @20.02Philip King presents The South Wind Blows.The same evening @ theres Ceili House. Still on Sat. @23.10 Sandy Harsh persents the best Country show on radio.On Sunday night the Brilliant P.J. Curtis presents Ryhthm and Roots which features somegood folk. He also presents Reels to Raga on Lyric F.M.on Wednesday evenings. Then theres John Kelly's Mystery Train every week day evening @ 20.00. Theres more on Irish local Stations, but have you tried Charlie Backfish's Sunday Street on W.U.S.B. F.M. from Stoney Brook, New York??. Well worth a visit.

Dear Mariner, thanks so much for the kind words above re: my radio progs. on two Irish national radio stations, RTE Radio 1 & Lyric Fm. My Lyric Fm prog . on Wed 7-8PM, 'Reels TO Ragas' contains music from Madagaskar to Mali to Miltown Malbay to Memphis....would love to hear from you by the way.... Can I also mention that there are wonderful traditional music progs(also mentioned above ) on Clare FM 6 nights a week ...Mon - Sat. 7-9pm.(6.30-8PM on Sat). happy new year to Mudcatters everywhere... Thanks KT and Philippa for the info about Downtown. I searched for it and found they do have internet streaming although they don't show up on the directory I mentioned above. I had the pleasure of meeting Maurice Leyden in Inishowen last March so I'll be sure to tune him in... next time I'm up at 5AM on Sunday!

Thanks, KT. The must be popular because I couldn't get a line out of the Downtown server. I did listen to Clare FM however. Lots of talk about the Irish music scene in London in the 1950s, etc.

PJC again.Forgot to mention on my posting above that I will be presenting a short prog. of traditional music from my home here in the Burren in Nth. Clare tomm. Jan 1st . This is part of a radio extravaganza on BBC3 who present a 24-hr World Music Day of music from all over the globe. My section falls between Portagal and Cuba at around 4.40. approx and is broadcast on both BBC 3 and Lyric FM (Check the www's) Hope you can lend an ear. Happy New Year. PJC

on BBC Radio Derby (94.2 FM) there is Folkwaves with Mick Peat and Lester Simpson on Mondays at 7-8pm.

And don't forget Ciaran Mac Mathuna's Sunday morning programme (about 8am or 9am, not sure) on RTE Radio 1 - and of course Raidio na Gaeltachta more or less any time. You'll get these at www.rte.ie and surf through to the appropriate station.

Sorry, P.J., I missed you by less than 1 hour. The BBC was in-between Latvia and "Jesh" Bach when I was able to stagger over to the computer. The flat was filled with ever-so-friendly friends when your time came about. You certainly were in hallowed company though! I know the Bach family (from a safe historical and geographical distance) by initials, and some even by actual first and second names (though the friendliness has never been reciprocated), but your crew are down to nicknames!

Radio Scotland has Celtic Connections plus loads of other good stuff. On real radio it's on 810khz, audible throughout uk if you've got a DECENT receiver with a proper aerial. I don't know if it's on the net. Couldn't agree more with BBC R2 prog with Mike Harding, I usually have a listen but as I prefer tradtional English / British music, I usually also turn off. Try (on real radio again) R. Lancashire 95.5mhz Thurs 8-9pm. Only audible in NW England though. I believe R Merseyside has a prog Thurs 7-8pm (FM somewhere) but I've not heard it. BBC World Service used to have an excellent prog called 'These Musical Islands' produced by Alistair anderson I think. Good bloke, drinks beer, excellent musician, good music.
