If you could spend one hour with one recording artist, living or dead, what artist would you chose to spend the hour with?

Animaterra wants to spend an hour with "Hildegarde von Bingen."

I haven't heard any of her songs, but then recording techniques weren't so good in her day, and her recordings are VERY hard to find!

I wouldn't call her a recording artist, because she wasn't primarily known for recording. Just singing. Jeannie Robertson. Jean Ritchie, too.

I'd probably just sit there slack-jawed and wide-eyed though...

In my younger years, I probably would have picked someone like Jackson Browne, or (don't laugh) Elton John. These days, it's getting harder to find people who grew up in a firmly rooted family singing tradition, and I would love to just sit there and listen to stories and songs illustrating how it was.

Guess I've been lucky having spent time with Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger, Wilf Carter (he let me play his custom Martin).Tommy Makem, Gordon Bok, Dave Mallett,Ramblin' Jack Elliott the Patons, Joe Hickerson, and a host of less well known but excellent musicians. I'm still looking forward to meeting Rick and Seamus.

Wilf carter! What a gentleman he seemed to be. My gawd he sang for a long time. Kendall, any chance you could share some of the dynamic of your meeting with him?

I opened for him once, and he was very friendly. Must have met thousands of fledgling singers but he took the time to shake hands, ask where I was from and tell me to "warm 'em up for me, son". You bet I was thrilled!

Rick (avoiding the snow shovelling I MUST do)

Mozart, if only to fool myself that he wrote that aria from Queen of the Night for me to sing...... and only if I get to wear the costume she wore in the film 'Amadeus'....

Hildegard of Bingen is not difficult to find, I have at least 4 of her CDs, very relaxing, very thought provoking and extremely beautiful. Try reading her books too. She even has a cookery book, based on the recipes she allowed in her convent, simple, wholesome and nutritional. Wish I could find a copy of it.....

I met Stan Hugill...I was supposed to send him a tape but, alas, never got to it...
My meeting with Wilf Carter was brief. At that time, I was about 16 and had grown up with his music, living so close to Canada and all. He was quite impressive, tall great entertainer... I told him I was just learning guitar, and he handed me his Martin. While I was making love to it, he told me the history of it. And, we also got into why he drove a Chrysler instead of a Cadillac. Claimed he had worn out 3 Caddys, and the Chrysler held up better over all. Anyway, Rick, he came across as a genuine nice guy who really appreciated people who liked his music. (kinda like you) That was 50 years ago, so, the memory is dim. However, the lasting impression is, I'm so glad I met him. He is still a hero of mine.

"Recording" includes writing, and always has. So Hildegarde and Wolfgang are available choices.

Just because we've got other ways of geting a record as well these days, we don't have to junk the language. (The same way "computing" includes doing sums in your head or with pencil and paper as well as with these clever electronic devices.)

There are a number that I would like to meet. Dylan, Johnny Winter, Taj Mahal. Would have liked to have met Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Little Walter.

But to spend an hour of conversation with? Willie Nelson, hands down. I think that Willie would be more multi-dimensional than the others. He just seems like such a fine person, it would be a treat to talk to him, we might never get around to music.

Jon, I forgot about Mick. He's a fascinating man I would gladly talk with again. And Tommy Sands- maybe even especially Tommy.

Rick and Kendall, I almost chose Wilf Carter at the beginning- He was my second musical hero right after Elton Britt. I never met either of them, of course.
