Subject: Blues for Inner Ci ty From: stella Date: 31 Dec 00 - 02:56 PM I'm starting a listening library for an inner city music program. I'd love to have input on what blues is absolutely essential in the collection. These kids, the poorest in LA , have never heard most of this music. Any advice is welcome. Thanks |

I'm sure you have your own ideas, plus a knowledge of the basic essentials, so I would suggest, in addition to your basic canon, a range of humorous blues songs that might grab their funnybone. Here are a few: Big Leg Emma's House-Champion Jack Dupree My Baby-Bukka White Bad Like Jesse James-John Lee Hooker Personal Favorites: Honest I Do-Jimmy Reed Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me-Mississippi John Hurt Anything by Lightning Hopkins, Anything by Memphis Slim best of luck with this program. I'd be happy to make tapes for you of anything I have. let me know if I can help. Kevin Wilson |
