Subject: How did you spend the evening? From: CarolC Date: 01 Jan 01 - 07:09 AM I spent New Year's eve with two very special freinds in two countries at the same time. My very good friend, Ela, was here with me at my place. We had an assortment of junk food, good food, sparkling cider, music, laughter (I showed her some Mudcat posts), and conversation. At 11:45 EST, a special friend in another country called on the phone (I'm in the U.S.). All three of us hollered in the New Year together ("Happy f***ing New Year", if I remember correctly) ...across international borders. I think that's pretty cool. Ain't technology something? Carol |

Stayed home and watched the Leaf game with the kids, the bride was working, and I haven't played a New Years gig in a couple of years. Walked the dog this morning. Sure is quiet out there. Sounds boring doesn't it? No hangover though (I've been 6 weeks dry) and I can remember what I did last night. Not much fun, but at least the Leafs won. Happy New Year! Mooh. |

From: Little Neophyte Date: 01 Jan 01 - 08:29 AM I spent the wee hours of the morning comforting a good friend whose wife told him at 12:00 midnight she was leaving him for the carpenter that was working on their home. I felt so badly for my friend. It all came as a great shock to him. They have 4 young kids and he loves his wife & family. My friend has a long road ahead of him. Right now he is so lost he can barely function. What can you do. Life throws us a wild card when we least expect it. Guess all I can do is be there to listen. Bonnie

Good time, well received. Packed up stuff, layed down in back seat of van, told bigchuck, "take charge, my good man." That's the last I remember. From: katlaughing Date: 01 Jan 01 - 11:15 AM Watched Cirque de Soleil, which was kewl, until Bravo showed it hour after hour and you heard that music throughout...eventually it almost drove me round the bend! We all fell asleep for naps about 830-9p; then rallied round about 9p. Watched "A Very English Marriage" with Albert Finney and Peter Courtenay (?) on PBS, then at about 1145p put "Chicken Run" in the VCR and laughed our arses off. What a darling, funny movie! Hit the sack at 130a after missing Jon and others in Paltalk, read my book until 230a, got up at 7a, went back to bed, got up at 9a.

From: Matt_R Date: 01 Jan 01 - 11:23 AM Well, my Dad and I watched the Philadelphia Eagles whoop Tampa Bay's behinds, then later we crammed Ruffles, Doritos and Fritos with dip while watching a Columbo movie, then we turned on Dick Clark after that was over to catch the last 30 secs of the ball dropping. Then we turned the TV off, and I hauled out our old 45's collection, and I spun some Beatles, George Harrison, Gilbert O'Sullivan, and Kiss ("Beth") which made me sad because I couldn't be with my girl...who happens to love Kiss. Oh well. Let's hope this year yields the promise of a bright future. BTW Happy Birthday Day Bill in Alabama! --Matt |

From: Peg Date: 01 Jan 01 - 11:28 AM stayed home alone.. was invite to go to a party or a movie but opted to not do anything. watched TV until 10:30 pm, decided to read a convoluted fantasy story, dozed off until 12:30, went online and chatted with a friend untl the wee hours... had a little glass of Tyr Connell to celebrate the new year... today I shall go for a hike in the woods, set up some new elemental altars, and cook a nice meal for myself. Build a fire, too, and read one of the books I got for Christmas. I have the next two weeks off until teaching starts (having gotten laid off my day job two weeks ago). Having freinds over for dinner and "Cadfael" tomorrow evening. Hope to have a quiet but productive week. happy 2001 all! peg |

At this point my friend can not make sense of anything. It was horrible timing and came out of left field. All he can do is cry. Amergin, as for making him feel like he is still lovable, appreciated and cared for well...... there is a limit. He is an old boyfriend and I think he would like more comfort than I am prepared to offer. I will try to find him a good marriage counselor or therapist. He needs to talk with a professional. He also could use a good ear and friendship which I am more than happy to offer. Its interesting, the man owns half of Toronto, lives in a palace and has a 'picture perfect home'. It has been a rude awakening for him that having all the money in the world means little when your world is falling apart. Bonnie |

Did you ever hear the song Raggle Taggle Gypsies? the lady runs off with the gypsy and leaves her rich husband, baby and great house with a feather bed. I've been told it is a matter of needing a challenge, and, a need to play with fire. Kate Wolf sang a song which touched on it....some kind of love tears your heart, when you knew it was wrong from the start..but, try and explain the moth to the flame... After years of self examination, I came to the conclusion that I am only attracted to intelligent women. The problem is, if they are bright enough to attract me, they are also bright enough to avoid me.. Anyway, Bonnie, this man is going to go through hell, and all his friends can only listen and try to support his smashed self esteem. Sounds like she is the future loser, and will come to regret her move. She really should hav eased into it instead of dropping a bomb. Not nice. |

Musician friend of ours has it every year, and lots of musicians come to it, then they can go do their gigs at night. Curtis & I aren't rowdy enough for New Year's Eve gigs, thank goodness. Used to try to do them, and I'm really relieved now that we don't play bars anymore (except for a few, exceptional, quiet ones!) We stayed home in the evening. Curtis watched football on TV, I cleaned my home office. (Well, *started* to clean-- to actually clean it will take most of 2001). Happy New Year! We went to a New Years Eve Party where all of the clocks were set ahead 3 hours. It was the first party that I have been to in a long time where everyone really got dressed up, there was a big spread of food, and the hostesses kept coming around and making sure that our champaigne glasses were full. At Midnight (9:00pm) someone played auld Lang side on bagpipes and we all popped crackers. It was fun. Then we came home, had hot chocolate, and a fire in the fire place. Picked my banjo for a while. Then, I put on a Bruce Molsky CD (new) and we all dozed off. The champaigne earlier had done me in. We barely woke up at midnight for my traditional kiss. This morning my youngest son Ryan woke up early and made me a Birthday Breakfast (Frozen Waffles). Today, the black eyed peas are on the stove and I'm about to start cooking my collard greens (from scratch this year a first). All in all a pretty good start. JAB |

I also enjoyed the gracious company of the Ducks whom I met for the first time including all the ducklings and lovely they were too. had to leave early to start work but everyone else seemed to be there for the duration. Heard some fabulous singing and much snogging went on after midnight-which made up for the snow and the ice! |

A rather dull party, with the radio tuned to some crap station blaring plastic pop all the way through - midnight was missed due to some gripping discussion (not) on the viability of various dot.coms. There was a belated and half-hearted stab at Auld Lang's wotsit, but that was it as far as real music goes, and I had far too much to drink (to mitigate the tedium) - or so my SO tells me. Had hoped to get to Aldershot for Morticia's party, but the complex party plans of a 16-year-old daughter put paid to that. Grrr! Today was better though - up to Buntingford to see the Standon Crownsmen's Mummers' Play, followed by a belting singing session in the back bar of the pub with some real people, during which it seemed like half the singers turned out to be lurking 'Catters. Anyhap, a happy new century to the lot of yers! |

We ate plenty of food, sang some songs, drank some beer and wine, talked some talk, and sang more songs. I started the new year by trying some Leap Frog whiskey (stated by mine host to be one of the finest single malt whiskies). Unfortunately it was a case of pearls before the swine. I wouldn't have recognized its fine qualities if he hadn't told me what they were. |

(Even better than Talisker, but I had to try them side by each too close apart to know for sure -- lucky me to have both in hand at the same time!) It was a nice, rather laid back gathering that had time for conversation as well as music. And its continuation before, during and after brunch today was a lovely way to welcome in the New Year. In bed before midnight, but heard some fireworks go off. Up at 5:00am to get ready for work. Didn't know until later this afternoon that "wild youths" had torn up downtown Portland (OR) because for some reason the city didn't have a fireworks show this year. |

It was grand,the place was jammed and crazy and the we were flat on it, but I was a lot older than most of the revelers, and they must have wondered how long this aging rocker could hold out. Why do I do it? Well we hold on to our dreams, don't we? All the best to all of you in the new year, wish me luck, I'll keep on rocking as long as they let me, you do the same! We had a good visit, then went to my favorite pub, The Dubliner, around 9:30pm. We lasted until about 11:00pm, but it was so noisy and filled to the gills with young college age revelers, we decided to leave before midnight. Drove to a nearby Denny's and had a good conversation over coffee. Didn't drink a drop of alcohol because I was driving and had a great time. DougR |

From: KingBrilliant Date: 02 Jan 01 - 04:57 AM We had decided to stay in and celebrate quietly - so Mark went to the pub for a quick one at lunchtime. Then the cat caught fire, which meant that Hammerite & I had to evacuate the house (due to the smell) and run down to the pub to tell Mark all about it. We were just on our way home again when one of the neighbours turned up & bought us a drink. So we called it fate & stayed til the end. We did try to get some singing going at the very end, but noone could remember any whole songs (too drunk) - it was good fun trying though. Anyway - the main thing is that the cat is alright - he's a really fluffy one (or was....) so it was just singeing really & didn't reach the skin at all. Still, at least I know what smells worse than a stinky old cat now : a singed stinky old cat of course! Happy new year everyone... Kris |

We are considering having an Early Risers New Year next year -- get other morning people over for a pajama party, go to bed at 10:00 or so, get up at 6:00 and have a pancake breakfast. John |

And she wanted them engraved with their names. So we went out and bought the glasses and then went looking for some of that glass etching paste. We eventually found the etching paste but all the stencils we could find were too big so we bought some mylar and I cut a stencil that said 2001 But the mylar was too stiff and the etching paste got underneath and blurred the letters. It was now three in the afternoon and we had to leave by six. So I put a diamond bit in the Dremel tool and engraved all twelve of them by hand, with that message on one side and their name on the other. At six, all of us walked up the street to the Polish club where they had a roastbeef dinner and an open bar. We ate and drank and danced 'till midnight. At eight minutes past midnight we wished one of our neighbor's "Happy Birthday". We hugged everyone and walked (as best we could) back home. |

The high points that I remember, lots of good beer, except for the Blue Light which somebody's friend brought, only ONE bottle was drunk by the following morning. A Chocolate Mousse to DIE for. Maggies 80+ year old Mum started Auld Lang Syne in a really LOW key, we did get the hand crossing right though. We then carried on singing etc.High points, two great singers who normally live on a boat in Vancouver, me singing Mad Tom of Bedlam to Goeff's Bassoon acc. Griff and myself doing the Boar's Head Carol with the Roasted Pig's Head Table Centre bedecked with Holly. My wife taking me to bed at about 5.00 am cos I was falling asleep in the chair. Mister and I were at home in our jammies looking at Dick Clark on TV, drinking a little bubbly. Laughed some, cried some, marveled at how fast 2000 sped by, hoped for improvements in 2001. Yesterday actually was the best. I spent all day in my jammies and fuzzy slippers and did not work on any projects but My Own! Did not do any housework, did not cook (two words: Crock Pot). Got out my watercolors and played a little (I'm not much of a painter but never will be if I don't practice once in a while), made some jewelry with my new wire-coiling thingy, practiced at gold-leafing. May have finally mastered it. It's a pain in the neck but it sure is pretty. Watched Bonanza on TV (my favorite show of all time and now I have a new VCR so I can Tape It!!). Then staggered home swigging from the jug of blackberry brandy someone had brought along. Nobody was stupid enough to try driving on Amateur Night (we're all pros *L*)

Alan of Oz had managed to get keys to a luxury apartment right beside the Opera House, (to those Aussies online.. yes in that awful toaster that shouldn't have been built... *grin*)..... so Mark and the kids had a great view of the Opera House and the Harbour bridge........ must have been good.. the kids reckoned it was better than Disneyland........ slainte alison |

(www.thefort.com)We played tunes from the 1840's and earlier. Of course Auld Lang Syne fits right in there. We played the older melody and then followed with what everyone knows so they would know what the heck we were playing. We got done at The Fort in time for me to get back to a big house full of friends and family to ring in the new year. On New Years Day then I headed down to Colorado Springs to the Colorado College. They had a time capsule that was sealed in 1901 with the instructions to open after midnight 12-31-2000. So they opened it at 1:00PM 01-01-2001. Cool. I was there playing 1901 music with a friend playing banjos and bones and me on fiddle and mandolins. That was truly a historic event and one I felt fortunate to be invited to. Then we had two cars die on us, so we sat around my dad's house (he's on vacation in FL), eating pizza (which I ordered from the wrong restaurant, and had to go 14 miles out of my way to get) and watching Power Puff Girls and Twilight Zone. Then I switched to CNN, and watched 5 minutes of what I THOUGHT was coverage of this year's new years celebration in Russia, but turned out to be last year's. Which truly pissed me off, because I got all excited when the news-guy said something about the Russian government 'collapsing.' (Me- "Huh?! What happened?! Where's a radio?!") I agree that raising a child as a single parent is not easy, but sounts pretty good to me, especially compared to her fate. Went to bed around 1 a.m.; my friend camped out on the futon couch with our cats. Got up in the morning, fixed everyone a good hearty batch of oatmeal (that's porridge for you Brits) and talked till mid-afternoon. Never did get around to the champagne; it's still in the fridge. |

Only I was in the process of coming down with what people call "the Harmony crud" since more years than not, some of us come home from camp sick and I am often one. So this year I went to bed at 12:30 and missed all the singing, dangitall! Most of my cabinmates came in at 4 a.m. Here's what Joe missed. At 11:45, we close the concert, clear the chairs and the kids run up into the balcony with all the confetti that they have been making for the last five days, and we all count it down. Just after "three...two... one, Happy New Year!", the kids pelt us with handfuls -- and this year some bright soul dumped the button box into the mix. "Happy New-youch! This isn't confetti, it's hail" Everyone sings the round "Bring it in, Bring in the New Year" and most of us do it wrong, so that the syncopation vanishes, something that drives Lani nuts. Ignorance is bliss, however, and most everyone else has a great time doing it. Champagne and Martinelli's follow, and then a midnight snack table, and after everyone's been hugged and kissed enough, the singers go back to singing, the dancers to dancing, the jammers to jamming, and a few of the kids get parented to bed. Our 14 year old daughter stayed up to play soccer outside after the dance, and came in at 4. Blessings, and Happy New Millenium, achoo! Barbara |

I think it was the shpping channel. Anyway, when the big moment came, whe all went nuts and blew the moisemakers and shook our beers up and squirted thm all over, and then we all started singing Auld Lnng Syne over and over, and then I puked.
