I JUST CAN'T WAIT
(Ian Campbell & John Dunkerley)
from the LP 'That's Not the Way It's Got to Be' where it's sung by Roy Bailey with concertina accompaniment by John Kirkpatrick.

I took this job when I left school and I thought it might be fun,
I signed the papers binding me 'til I was twenty-one.
But I just can't wait to collect my cards, I just can't wait to go,
I can't get along with the people here and the work it bores me so.

So I learned the trade for what it's worth and the time has gone so slow,
But soon my birthday's coming up and I'll be free to go.
But I just can't wait to collect my cards, I just can't wait to go,
I can't get along with the people here and the work it bores me so.

Well, I think I'll wait 'til the wedding's over before I say goodbye,
For the girlfriend tells me that we must save if a house we hope to buy.
But I just can't wait to collect my cards, I just can't wait to go,
I can't get along with the people here and the work it bores me so.

Now I'll have to wait 'til the baby's born before I can be free,
For I understand a pregnant wife must have security.
But I just can't wait to collect my cards, I just can't wait to go,
I can't get along with the people here and the work it bores me so.

Well, I think I'll wait 'til the kids leave school before I break away,
For growing kids eat money and I need the steady pay.
But I just can't wait to collect my cards, I just can't wait to go,
I can't get along with the people here and the work it bores me so.

Now I think I'll wait 'til the house is mine before I break the tie,
For the interest rates keep rising and the car it bleeds me dry.
But I just can't wait to collect my cards, I just can't wait to go,
I can't get along with the people here and the work it bores me so.

Well I think I'll wait 'til retiring age before I risk a break,
'Cos the pension scheme insures the wife and it's mainly for her sake.
But I just can't wait to collect my cards, I just can't wait to go,
I can't get along with the people here and the work it bores me so.

Well, thank you for the gold watch, Sir, the silver collection too,
But are you sure I have to go for I won't know what to do.
And I just can't bear to collect my cards, I just can't bear to go.
For I shall miss the people here and my life it bores me so.

How many of us think - 'That could be me'?

You're right Steve, it was written by Ian together with John Dunkerley and performed in the series by the Campbells, however it's on an LP (1975) (possibly now a CD) called 'That's Not the Way It's Got to Be' by Leon Rosselson and Roy Bailey (sung on the disc by Roy) FUSE CF251. And if no one else comes up with the words in the next 24 hours I'll transcribe them and send them in.

It's by Ian Campbell of the Ian Campbell Folk Group. ("I just can't wait to collect my cards" is the first line.) It doesn't seem to be in the DT or a previous thread, and I don't think I've got it anywhere (but I'll check). It's only a matter of time before somebody finds it!

It's a real period piece now -- how many people nowadays would jump at the chance of a job for life, so secure that you couldn't easily leave it by choice?

Steve

I wonder if anybody has the lyrics or a recording of asong which I heard many years ago.It was included in a BBC 2 documentary in the early seventies called "The Camera & The Song" The particular song accompanied filming of a factory worker from his start as an apprentice until his retirement.I recall the chorus thus: I just can't wait to leave this place I just can't wait to go I can't get along with the people here And the work it bores me so

I have an LP from the series but the song is not included. The series was conceived by Alex Glasgow in 1971 and was shown in1973 I think the programmes were compiled by John Bird. The camera man was John Hooper.
