My good friend and musical partner died on the weekend and his family has asked me to put together some music for his funeral. He loved slide guitar and Amazing Grace and I'd love to include it in the mix. Does anybody know a version of it that would be readily available? Any help appreciated.

David, I have no idea whether or not he has recorded "Amazing Grace" but there is an Irish dobro player called Frankie Laine whose style of playing would be ideally suited to this song. Maybe some Irish 'Catters could help here ?

Dear ddw, if you have access to a guitar store, there is a book called "The Gig Bag of Alternate Tunings" by Woody Mann I happen to have which has arrangements of Amazing Grace in all the major open tunings, nicely put together. Otherwise, if you had a fax number, I could send them to you in your preferred tuning. You could send me a private message.
yours, Peter T.

About 30yrs ago a group made a single of amazing grace, with, I assume , multiple tracked slide guitar. It sounded like a guitar version of a pipe band. I think that they were called (something) Waterfall.

I vaguely recall Ronnie Wood doing a version (on slide guitar) on a Faces album subtitled something like "Overture and Beginners" or something like that. Most of the rest of the album was pretty sloppy, but I think that the version of "Amazing Grace" was passable. Good luck anyway and my condolences on the loss of a friend. Alan.

Harvey Reid did a good version on one of his CD's - here's a link to his site - you may be able to find it there.

My friend Ken does it beautifully on saw. Don't see any reason why a slide won't work just as well.

As far as the name of the band who recorded the slide guitar version of Amazing Grace is concerned, the answer is; The Great Awakening.

The single should be available from collectors vinyl stores (or hidden in the loft or basement of ageing hippies)

Thanks to Richard. It has been driving me mad trying to remember the name of that group. When it came out it was used as a theme tune by an experimental Radio Station here in the U.K. in the early seventies, called Radio Geronimo (anybody remember them). They had this great idea that they could dispense with D J's and their egos, and just play good music, with an announcer giving you a list of the tracks being played every so often. It tried to run non-commercialy, needless to say it was doomed from the start. But a great experiment.( A tyical 1/2 Hr would be Mahler, Judy Collins, Nice, King Crimson, Capt Beefheart, Fairport Convention, Bob Dylan).

There is a great slde guitar version of Amazing Grace on Rod Stewart's "Every Picture Tells A Story" album. The liner notes list the slide player as Sam Mitchell. The song is not listed on the album. It's just tucked in as one of those little gems you find by surprise.

FANTASTIC! - I remember twisting the black ebonite knobs, tuning into Radio Andorra hearing the wonderful Andorran National Anthem played at closedown. Then Radio Geronimo would start start its broadcast. First time I ever heard 'Ohio' by CSNY. No one else was playing it!

My Mother and I (back in 1969)had a difficult time determining what the Amazing Grace/Great Awakening record was called i.e. I had only heard the recording on the radio. But we eventually tracked it down by singing the tune to the manager in Challenger & Hicks record shop. I still have that single (somewhere!). Must have a look to see what was on the flip side.

Thank you for bringing back so many memories!

There was a mention earlier on of a version by Ronnie Wood. I think the version in question was actually by Sammy Mitchell from the Rod Stewart album, 'Every Picture Tells A Story'. This came out in 1971 and is the album that featured 'Maggie May'. Sadly, Sammy passed away in 2006 back in his home town of Liverpool. Lovely version, with a nice vocal by Rod-er-nee.

I've done "Amazing Grace" on slide guitar going back a long way... It's a very easy song to figure out... 1-4-5... Pick your own key... I like to do it in open "E" or "D"...

I perform Amazing Grace on lap style slide guitar in Open D. This works well as the melody is played on the first string and the strings 6 and 5 work as done/accompanying notes.
