I recently saw a small part of a show on VH1 that sparked my intrest. It was about the singer songwriter Nick Drake. I have spent months looking for one of his songs, only I didn't know it was his. I was looking for the song from the VW Cabriolet commercial. I want to find out more info about him, if you could please help I would appreciate it.

Nick Drake was a wonderfully gifted singer writer and guitarist, who had a tragically short life. All of his work is an absolute must.

This page should get you started

Enjoy the journey

The song you're looking for is called "Pink Moon" on the album of the same name.

His music is so personal and intimate it makes the listener feel like voyeuristic...

kudos to VW; their commercials have actually introduced or in this case reintroduced people to lots of great music (I am thinking of the Clannad craze a few years ago sparked by that harry's game snippet)

a friend had given me that Nick Drake Cd along with some others and I had not even bothered to listen to it until I read an article about that commercial and how that song grabbed everyone's attention. Some WB shows atarted using his music too (Young Americans for one)

I hate it when I start liking someones music after hearing it sell Diapers or Doritos or VWs. I feel sort of guilty that I didn't start listening to it somewhere more memorable than my couch, where I hear it sandwiched between Wal-Mart and Hot Pockets. Which is where I first heard Nick Drake. But I guess I shouldn't whine. Yeah, Nick Drake is posthumously pimping German cars, but like Peg said, it's introducing people to some great music. I still feel sort of lame. :)

Whilst the site that I mentioned in my first message is the best Nick Drake site on the net (at least that I know off), it doesn't off much of a biography for the uninitiated.

This page from amazon.com offers a nice accurate potted biography.

Ed

btw I may have been wrong saying that you'll enjoy the journey, some of the songs are desperatly sad. But it's a worthwhile journey anyway.

Besides the long overdue re-releases there are at least two biographies neither of which do him justice. I would just like to say that before that terrible depression took over he was a lovely bloke, great company and very generous with his time and his talent. The irony is, as I recall him, he either didn't drive or didn't like driving and had no identifiable interest in cars of any complexion.

My memory is that Nick Drake could drive but didn't own a car - whether this was because he couldn't afford a car or because cars are generally incompatible with rum consumption, I do not remember.

...some of the best music around is on the commercials. Companies spare no expense in associating their product with an appropriate soundtrack, and both the product and soundtrack benefit from this marriage. Whether the consumer goes out and buys the product or not, the company's image is probably enhanced. I learned about Stomp! from Target commercials. I've not been to a Target store, but I attended a live performance of Stomp! as a result of that commercial. And my admiration for Target for at least having someone in their advertising department with an eye for the arts has increased.

I probably won't buy a VW, but I like it that someone in that company is a fan of Nick Drake, and I'm thankful that through that commercial I was exposed to some very fine music.

Now if I could only find out who's doing the music in those Aiwa commercials....

Which aiwa commercial do you mean? My search engines come up with lots.

For example, this one

..no, not that one. Two, actually.

1. Music for the one where the guy is sitting with his back to the camera listening to the stereo. When the music kicks in, the tuft of hair at the back of his otherwise bald head becomes an LED display, moving up and down in response to the music...some sort of funkadelic jam.

2. Guy keeps cranking up heavy music until he gets the high sign from his girlfriend, who's sunning poolside....

Thanks, I'll punch it into a search engine and see what I come up with....

The poolside Aiwa commercial features Mylene Farmer and a song called "Tomber 7 Fois".... Perhaps the other one may have featured music only written specifically for that commercial....
