The Peoples Music Network will be holding our annual Winter Gathering on January 26 through 28, 2001, at the M.D. Fox Elementary School in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. The theme of this year's Winter Gathering is "You Can't Kill the Spirit."

The PMN Winter Gathering will begin with a Friday evening meal, beginning at 6:00 on January 26, followed by a concert starting at 7:30 and lasting at least until 11:00.

On Saturday, Januray 27, there will be various workshops and jam sessions, a plenary session featuring Bruce Gagnor from the Global Network Against Weapons in Space, and a round robin open mic. Activities will last from breakfast at 7:30 in the morning until the round robin ends close to midnight.

Sunday, January 28, will feature Songs of the Spirit (an a capella open gathering), more workshops, and a closing ceremony. Activities will begin with breakfast at 7:30 AM and should wrap up around 2:00 PM.

Steve, do you know if they're planning to update the website? Right now it gives information on the next gathering in summer, 2000.

There's a lot of synchronicity round the Mudcat. Different people starting the same threads about the same obscure song or topic at the same time. Someone should research it. Someone probably is. The Men in Black...

Yipes, the outdated website is typical of the musical left. We're too busy singing about revolution to bother with anything so mundane. :-)

Seriously though, you might try asking Peoples Music Network national coordinator Sarah Underhill. Or at least alert her to the issue. Her e-mail address is and her phone number is (845) 626-4507.

See some of y'all in Hartford where I'll be leading a Woody Guthrie jam session and song swap. Let's see who can bring the most obscure Guthrie song. My contribution will be "66 Highway Blues," cowritten with Pete Seeger in 1940. This is the song which out-gangtas the gangstas with its fantasies of getting a gun and blowing down cops and assorted other folks who treated Pete and Woody mean. You can find it in "Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit People."

New England always has lots of fine stuff happening. Have a great time.

Oh, darn, I hadn't checked the DT lately! I guess I'll do "Down in O-Klay-Homa" instead. It's one of Woody Guthrie's finest songs, and at one time among the favorites with his Okie fans when he used to broadcast on the radio out of Los Angeles. And it's not in the Digital Tradition. You will have to dig up a copy of Ludlow Music's "The Nearly Complete Collection of Woody Guthrie Folk Songs" to find it. Here's a "fair use" sample:

I come from a land of Civilized Tribes,
Down in O-Klay-Homa,
Cattle go grazey and the cowpokes ride,
Down in O-Klay-Homa,
Prettiest clouds that ever did blow,
Prettiest girls that ever did grow,
Makes my toes all itching to go,
Down in O-Klay-Homa!

[Chorus]
Down in O-Klay, O-Klay-Homa,
Down in O-Klay, O-Klay-Homa,
Wish I was right back home tonight,
Down in my O-Klay-Homa!

See y'all in Hartford, Jan. 26-28.
Steve

To be sung to the tune of "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain":

We will see you in New England mighty soon! (Mighty soon!)
We will see you in New England mighty soon! (Mighty soon!)
We will see you in New England,
Where we'll sing of peace and freedom,
We will see you in New England mighty soon!

The PMN Winter Gathering in Hartford, CT, was a resounding success: lots of good music, lots of good company, and I got a chance to meet Mudcat Radio's Mary McCaffrey. There is a very good chance that next year's PMN Winter Gathering will be held in either Ashville or Greensboro, NC. Stay tuned!

I had a great time too, Steve! That was my first time ever singing at the Round Robin (a large open mic show)! It was nice to meet you and a secret lurker who lurks at his job! I hope more Mudcatters can come in the future. Any chance of your coming to Anna's gathering in NJ Feb 10 to 12?

If you are not familiar with the Peoples Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle (PMN/SFS or just PMN for short), here's a brief description.

Who are PMN/SFS?

We're a network of:

Musicians
Performers
Songwriters
Sound & recording engineers
Music Lovers
Record & concert producers
Promoters
Archivists
and more

using music and culture to promote progressive ideas and values. We're committed to working with and supporting grassroots and community organizations, to explore and present the diversity of people's culture. We learn from our communities and each other and we have fun doing it!

It Takes All Kinds...

We represent many social, racial, cultural, and ethnic communities as well as a great variety of musical and political interests. We are anti-racist activists, children's activists, feminists, labor organizers, lesbians and gays, and more. Our network stretches across the USA and Canada and includes other international members.

Music To Serve Our Needs

As PMN/SFS members we help develop, promote, and preserve people's music. We enjoy sharing our songs, stories, dances, and friendship with others who share the vision of a better world.

We have a lot to offer:

The Peoples Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle provides access to the valuable resources and support of a network of musical and cultural organizers.

Open to everyone:

Two yearly gatherings where people can swap songs, share experiences, attend musical/organizing workshops and perform before a knowledgeable and sympathetic audience. The summer gathering is held in the country and the winter one in a city. We expand our ethnic and cultural base by holding the winter gathering in a different city each year.
