The British Library has in its collection sheet music for a song called A COTTAGE IN THE COUNTRY (THAT'S THE THING) by Walter Donaldson (New York: Donaldson-Douglas & Gamble, 1930).

There's also JUST A LITTLE COTTAGE IN THE COUNTRY CALLING 'COME BACK HOME', words by Andrew B. Sterling and music by Alfred Solman (New York: Joe Morris Music Co., 1917).

It seems unlikely either of these are the song you want. I would guess Isla Grant probably wrote the song she sings called A COTTAGE IN THE COUNTRY, but I can't confirm this.

You could write to Isla Grant through: her web site.

Who wrote the song Cottage in the Country, I know Foster and Allen recorded it, but anybody know who wrote it.

well - it's not the cottage in the country that used to be sung by Ruth Etting. A COTTAGE FOR SALE

Here's a version.

Chorus
There's an old Cottage waiting in The Country
Waiting for someone to call
There's an old kettle boiling by the fireside
An old welcome mat in the hall
There's an old mum and dad there a waiting
For a son who's been gone for so long
An old Cottage waiting in The Country
Waiting for that boy to come home

Many years ago he had to go and leave them
And travel far across the foaming sea
To fight for the things that he believed in
With a song and a guitar on his knee
But they hoped and they prayed he'd return to them
Though the weeks slowly turn into years
Many nights they have been so lonely
And many nights there have been many tears

The old man is tired and weary
His back's bent over with pain
The old woman she sits by the fireside
And just gazes into the flames
On the table that's standing beside her
Are the pictures of the son she misses so
The son she held and kissed so dearly
When he left her so many years ago

Haven't found the lyrics yet but I have discovered that a song with this title is covered on a CD by Christina George: blicky. It is noted as a "contemporary" (rather than "Traditional") song.

Also, there is a Rogers and Hart musical ("Simple Simon") that contains a song called "Cottage in the Country" (blicky).

Wonder if they're the same song?

Good luck!

Alex

Hi all- I'm looking for the lyrics to a song I heard in Ireland when I was back for the Christmas. My internet searches have prooved fruitless. The chorous goes something like this:

There's an old cottage waiting in the country
Waiting for someone to call
There's an old kettle boiling by the fire
There's an old welcome mat in the hall
There's an old mom and dad there awaiting
For their son who's been gone for so long
There's an old cottage waiting in the country
Waiting for...

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

JPC.
