My wife accuses me of being a pessimist.

I say, everything bad that has ever happened to me (and, objectively, not much has) has been unexpected. The theory, therefore, is that if I worry about everything that can possibly go wrong, nothing will.

The flaw is that there are an infinite number of things that can go wrong, and a finite amount of time to worry in. But I try. My wife says I'm very trying, as a matter of fact.

Better - Something similar but different is "Don't plan you future using a rear-view mirror". Does that apply in this situation??

I think the point is that you shouldn't let your past control your future. I really believe that one of the most amazing abilities we have is the power to change. And sometimes to do that all we have to do is change our minds.

Creeping back to the optimist/pessimist thing, I think it was Robert Oppenheimer who said that an optimist believes this is the best of all possible worlds. A pessimist is sure of it.

My mother says that the pessimists are the ones that get things done in this world. The optimists sit around reading Norman Vincent Peale and thinking pure thoughts while the pessimists look around, see that there's a mess to clear up, snort in exasperation, and start in on the cleanup.
