Subject: German Mudcatters get-together?
From: Susanne (skw)
Date: 11 Jan 01 - 07:03 PM

I'm becoming envious hearing about Mudcat get-togethers in various parts of the world, so I thought I'd just start the ball rolling for Germany.
1. How many German Mudcatters are out there apart from Wolfgang and me?
2. How many of you would be interested in meeting somewhere at some future date?
3. Anything else?

Well, there's MudGuard.
Hey, if you guys have a gathering, that might be the motivation I need to get myself to Germany.
Then again, maybe not...

Hey, Susanne - does not being German but speaking it pretty fluently count? And is it allowed not to actually live in Germany but in a country not a million miles away from the Bavarian border (like Austria, for example!)?
M´cat gathering for Deutschers - what a good idea!
Cheers,
John

Well, there's Rollo (Hamburg), there's Joerg (having a GUEST in front of his name, but posting so often that he 'feels like' being a member), there's Harald (posting so rarely that he'll not see this thread), Uilleand as well (if I'm not totally mistaken), Snobby (But I haven't seen any posting by him since ages).
John, it is no impediment if you speak German, the only difficulty for you is that both Susanne and I live in the North of Germany, a far way from Austria.
In general, I think it is a good idea and would love to come.

Wolfgang

Oh well, I guess that Sian, Bron and I could (reluctantly) let Mudguard go back to being German if it would help the numbers... shame though as I think we would all happily have him as a Welsh member!

Seriously, I really hope it comes off for you. I can not fully express the pleasure I had in meeting fellow Mudcatters in Llantock 2000 - I liked everyone I met and I still can not get over the feelings of friendship that I experienced.

Greetings from Washington DC (it's not my fault), German Mudcatters. I had missed you heretofore. Is there in fact a 'traditional' or 'folk' scene there? I've seen references to German Bluegrass and of course, much good roots rock and rockabilly.

All the best, Fortunato (Chance Shiver)

Here I am, the much spoken about MudGuard from Munich. I apply for double membership - Welsh and German if this is possible.

I am interested in a meeting but whether I'm able to come depends on date (whether my boss can spare me at the time or whether I am on holiday) and place (if on a weekend, place is not so much of a problem as during the week...).

But don't expect that I will be able to make any music at a meeting - I am a passive musician ;-)

I forgot to mention: the nearer to Munich the meeting might be the better for me. And if not in Munich it should not be too far from a railway station - I don't own a car, and the last time I drove one was 14 years ago (so don't mention Rent-a-car - I have a driving license but I think it is better for all car drivers if I don't drive a car).

Wow! This is a lot more than I expected! I suppose it'll take us some time to agree on a time and place that would suit most of us (too much to hope we might actually accommodate everybody).
Let anyone come along who counts him/herself as a German Mudcatter, guest or no, other nationality or no, musician or no (I'm not one myself), Joe Offer or no, etc. (Joe, you'd actually be very welcome, I'm sure.)
Nothing but a weekend date will do, and we should try to find a location as central as possible. So - let me know where you live, and I'll work it out on the map (any other volunteers for this?).
Alternatively, we could tack the meeting on to a festival, such as Rudolstadt (first weekend in July). I'm almost certain to be there anyway :-). There is also the 'Festival of Political Song' in Berlin in late February, but I suppose that's too soon. Besides, I may be going during the week, but I won't be able to stay for the weekend. Any other ideas? Let's thrash this out!
Wolfgang, I'll send Harald a mail.

I hope I'll be able to be at the TFF this July (I was last year but only on Sunday and plan to spend the whole weekend at Rudolstadt this year!)- so this would be the perfect meeting point for me! And I think it would even be relatively central as a meeting location.

Hello everyone,

I am looking into the Mudcat often enough to be interested in meeting a few of you all, so if possible I would like to join a meeting. Currently I live in Berlin, which IMHO is a great place for folk music (espcially Irish).

All the best

Fortunato,
you see there is a German folk scene (even for folk music in German). One problem, however, is that there is also a kind of German Volksmusik (which features in our TV or radios or prominently in CD sales) that any German mudcatter wouldn't even touch with a ten feet pole.

All right - we know who we'll allow in. How about a few suggestions as to location? I've made two: Rudolstadt Folk Festival in early July, or somewhere in the centre of Germany any time (what about Easter???). Keep 'em comin'!

What about Frankfurt?
Advantages:
  • near the center of Germany,
  • can easily be reached from most directions by rail (I don't have a car),
  • offers an international airport for those who want to come from abroad
On the other hand, a place where one of us is living might not be too bad (for handling stuff at the local end like finding a pub and so on).

MudGuard, I agree - if no Mudcatter is actually living in the place that would make the arrangements so much more difficult.
(Just thinking aloud!)
There are at least two Mudcatters in Berlin, also, I have friends there I could ask for help with arrangements. It's not exactly in the center of Germany, but easy to reach by road, rail and air.
Then there is Hamburg, not exactly in the centre ... but easy to reach ... AND I live near and could help with arrangements.
Muenster would be nice, with a Mudcatter in place ... - except for the fact that it is more difficult to reach by rail (?) and air.
Difficult one ...

Easter Saturday wouldn't be good for me as I'll probably be on route to Japan then.

Also Hamburg and Berlin wouldn't be the best for me for travelling from Belgium. Any chance of a more central location, e.g. Dusseldorf, Koln or Frankfurt areas? If not, not to worry.

mcmoo, I admit my geography is shaky, but wouldn't Muenster (see my suggestion, not that far from the Dutch border) be a fairly good place for you to get to? And what time will you be back from Japan? (Hope it's a holiday, not a job!)
And is there anybody out there who COULD manage Easter? If not, we could just forget it.

hi everybody

I'm not here too often but like this place, it's a special one on the web. I like the idea of german mudcatters getting together and if I can make it (depends on time & place) be shure I'll come to the meeting. I write this from the south of germany, allgäu, close to the lake of Constance, right beside Austria and Switzerland (maybe they've also mudcatters there). It's an absolutely dead area concerning folk or folk-rock musicans but we have some lovely pubs around here. Let me know if your projekt is growing. Thanks to Domenico from Manchester who sent me an email to tell me about your plans. take care everybody menzze

Sorry for not responding for a long time, but I had too much work and then got the flu (I still have). I agree with Muenster obviously though it is very far to Muenster from the south of Germany (much nearer from Belgium). If Easter saturday makes problems for several how about any normal weekend in May (too many people might be off on a vacation at Easter. How about 1swt, 2nd, 3rd week end in May (these are alternatives, mind you).

Hi MudGuard

It's not Lindau but you're not too far away.I live near Leutkirch in Engelboldshofen, maybe ya know it:-). If not, don't care. I know Lindau very well, 'cause I used to work there a lot, especially on the roofs, which is quite normal for a carpenter. May sounds not to bad. Maybbe I got ck my driving license 'til then. I'll keep watching the thread. Have a good time Menzze

Very informative, ß!!!

Menzze, I know Leutkirch, but not Engelboldshofen... I left Lindau for Munich (or rather my parents did) when I was six, and that was in 1972.
And I haven't been back too many times (although I think Lindau is a lovely city - especially the island).

hi MudGuard

don't worry if ya don't know Engelboldshofen it's only a piece of flyshit on a very big map. The funny thing is you moved away from here in '72 and I came here in '74 when I was 14. But I found ot it's a great place to live and I won't move to far. Ya should come back someday, you'll love it.

Is there already a date for the meeting. In case of missing it here please email to menzze@web de

First weekend in May, then, in Muenster.

Muenster has a youth hostel, top quality near the town center, but wait. I'll ask my wife whether she'll take our daughter with her for a weekend somewhere else. In that case you could bring your sleeping bags and fill our five rooms flat (4 could sleep comfortable, 6 fine, 12 possible,...).

A music pub? Not really my taste, but an Irish pub (and if we go first to some other place for the food, it is fine...)

My guess would be Holland. Muenster is straight east of Rotterdam, and the nearest town you might have heard of is Bielefeld, still further east. We'd certainly welcome a British delegation!

Just in order to avoid any misunderstandings: the first weekend in May is - according to my diary - 5/6 May. I'm looking forward to that!

It also might be worth knowing a little about the musical leanings and abilities of the people taking part - such as, Susanne doesn't play anything but she sings a bit - not solo if she can help it, mind you!

Wow! I was just thinking about posting a "is there any Mudcatter in Germany" thread. I am passing through on my way to Italy im March and have about a 3 hour lay over in Frankford. Are any of you in that area? Maybe you could give me some advise on where to find my gate etc. Love to hear from you. Unfortunately, I don't speak German or read it and am a little nervous about changing planes. I also have to change in Chicago. bet

5/6 May gets an OK from me. My wife and daughter will be here on that weekend, so I can't offer you to come all in our flat for overnight. However, there's a big garden behind the house and there'd be place for some tents. I can't imagine there'd be problems with caravans in our part of the town. Of course, there are official camping and caravan sites in Münster, but not at walking distance. Hotels at reasonable prices are near my place and the youth hostel is at walking distance (30 min.).

What else do you need to know? Directions how to find me come later. From Belgium, I think I'd go via Aaachen and not through the Netherlands, but I'm not sure.

So much for now.

Hi Folks, Greeting from Hamburg!

Meeting in Muenster first weekend in may sounds good so far - but maybe I have to cancel on short term for I am looking for a job in the moment.

Maybe there is chance to get a lift, but this can be sorted out later.

no problem with tenting by me. I like it.

Beside, about the german "Folk scene": Don't forget german scout and youth movement. They have cultivated a vivid tradition of genuine german folk singing where a lot of the old songs survive and many, many new ones are written.

Looking forward to Muenster

I'm still not so sure about me-there are organisational difficulties such as not finishing work friday until at least 15.30, the getting to be pickeed up-near Selby/Goole a(about an hour or so away-or getting to Hull, and then though I hate to mention it-the cash to do the trip with. I;m still working on all of these, but I would love to come. Is the sleeping bag idea still on?

We'd be glad to have visitors from the UK for the weekend. At least sleeping bag and tent should be possible in our back yard. BTW, Münster has also a Scottish pub with a decent food. With a long notice the guy might even be willing to make a haggis. But if that would some of you deter from coming to Muenster, we might go to the Italian restaurant for the food (or a greek, turkish, lebanese, chinese, spanish or even German).

Having just investigated ferry routes and times it would seem that for UK mudcatters to come we would have to set off from Hull on Friday night, travel all day Saturday and then leave early on Sunday to travel back overnight to Hull. Can't really say that sounds a lot of fun so it looks like we won't be coming after all.

If any UK mudcatters are returning on the Sunday, there's a monthly session at Nellie's (The White Horse) that starts at about 2pm and finishes later - much much later. It happens on the first Sunday of every month, unless it gets moved for any particular reason. As we haven't had March or April yet we haven't discussed if we'll move the May one because of the bank holiday. But if anyone is interested, please get in touch. Many of the Hull Chapter will be in Whitby, though (like Maggie and me, Ickle Dorritt and Cavia_P).

Of course, if you're close enough to Beverley and have a designated driver, we'll look forward to seeing you in March or April.

Let's call it MUNSTER MUDCAT MAY-DAY GATHERING!

Llanfair: here is a recipy against sea sickness delivered from my grandpa who was a mediteranean sea shooner cookie... You should eat so much you are really stuffed up before you launch, but not as much you get sick without sea of course. While aboard, eat and drink heartily. You will find this REALLY helping, tried it myself occasionally. The mistake of most puking land lubbers is, their stomach is empty because they expect problems.

for all, here's an interactive town map of Muenster

for Andreas: I had a look at the map (it has a street search function): Overbergstr. is so close that I am ashamed I didn't know. Ten minutes walk from me. Go to the search function of the twon map, enter Overbergstr. and as soon as you have the map click on the arrow pointing exactly to the East. You'll then see a map that has both Overbergstr. and Wiener Str. in it and you can zoom in or out to see where that is in general.
