Subject: RE: Acoustic Music Venue - Seattle From: Mark Cohen Date: 14 Jan 01 - 12:24 AM Stewart, any more of this stuff and I may just decide to abandon Hilo's 150 inches of rain a year for a return to Seattle's 40! (Except here the rain is warm....) I attended a few of the Victory Open Mikes in Tacoma back in the 80s, and I'm so glad somebody finally was able to open a northern branch! If I ever get back for a visit (like PSGW or Folklife), I'll try to stop in. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Acoustic Music Venue - Seattle From: Gypsy Date: 13 Jan 01 - 06:24 PM I love Victory Music! We subscribed for quite some time, until realizing that it won't work when you live in CA. What a fabulous organization. I highly recommend their CD Victory Sings At Sea. It's how i found out about the organization. |
Subject: Acoustic Music Venue - Seattle From: Stewart Date: 13 Jan 01 - 05:43 PM This may be of interest to people in the Seattle area. I coordinate an acoustic music venue for Victory Music at Valdi's Ballard Bistro, in the Ballard area of N. Seattle. In November, 1999, Victory Music produced its first monthly acoustic concert at Valdi's and in December, 1999, began a weekly open mic. If you drop by Valdi's on a Wednesday evening you will hear some talented local acoustic musicians — singer-songwriters performing solo with guitar or with a small backup band, an older gentleman playing hot classical jazz guitar and occasional flute or recorder, a young duo singing and playing soulful blues with guitar and harmonica, or an occasional traditional folk or cabaret singer. Halfway through the evening one of the regular performers plays an extended set as a featured act. The atmosphere is relaxed, the sound mellow, with an attentive and appreciative audience enjoying good music and food. This is not the typical noisy bar scene, but a quiet, non-smoking, listening environment. This music is made possible by Victory Music, an all-volunteer, 31-year old, non-profit organization whose mission is to promote acoustic music by local artists in the Puget Sound area. And Valdi and Patti Bjarnason provide the good food and comfortable venue in which this music takes place. The musicians are local artists who perform as an avocation or aspire to become full-time professionals. One of the striking features is the high level of local talent presented here. In addition to the weekly open mics, Victory Music also presents acoustic concerts each third Saturday evening of the month at Valdi's. On February 17, The Fossils, a favorite local traditional bluegrass band will perform; on March 17, W. B. Reid will present a solo act of rag-time, blues, jazz and more on guitar, banjo and fiddle; on April 21, two local singer-songwriters, Kathryn Mostow and Larry Murante will present their own original songs; and on May 19, Stone Circle, a local trio on harp, flute and fiddle, will present music from Celtic and northern lands. Victory Music's acoustic concerts begin at 8:30 pm on the third Saturday, with a $8 cover ($6 for Victory members). Open mics begin at 7:00 pm every Wednesday evening, with musician sign-ups closing at 6:45 pm, and $3 cover ($2 for Victory members, performers free). Fifteen acts (two songs each) are presented, including a featured act, and performers are selected by a random draw. Victory Music encourges a diversity of acoustic music and performers ranging from beginning amateurs to professionals at the open mics — everyone is welcome. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
