Yeah! it's me. I'm posting from home and couldn't be bothered to reset my cookie.

And it's salt water for me too. I started the thread to demonstrate Mudcat to a neighbor who is an avid fisherman. He has a trailer at Sea Isle NJ. and I go down there once or twice a year and we fish and drink and fish and eat fish and drink.... You know how it goes.

The funny thing is that the folks at Sea Isle think that Skate is a garbage fish and they throw it away. They won't even allow it on their boats. Weird folks!

Chalk stream dry-fly in the south of England. Salisbury and District Angling Club, to be precise, tho' I'm living in Plymouth at the moment, which is a long way (by UK reckoning) from the nearest chalk stream, but whenever I can.

I have been blessed with some outstanding saltwater trips, mainly on two boats, the "Audacious" and the "June Rose".

Eight separate weeks on the "Audacious", our of Cabo San Lucas,Zihuatanejo,Panama(Tropic Star Lodge), Tortola BVI., Lyford Cay Bahamas, and Kennebunkport Maine.

Two separate weeks on the "June Rose" out of La Paz and Cabo.

Love to swap stories...

I love to fish, at least once a week, when the saesons are open. IN the summer it's Lake ontario for salmon and lake trout. In winter it's lake Scugog for walleye, perch and rock bass. Was out last night on Scugog, 17 inches of ice. caught 5. Fried them up today. Great.

Have also fished Lough Neagh, The Shannon, The Moyola and the Bann in Ireland, also a few lakes and rivers in Scotland.

Fishing? Yes! Fresh water. There is a stream and a river near my home in Connecticut. The stream is warm water with largemouth bass, perch, bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish, pickerel (small pike), dace, golden shiners, eels, suckers and brown bullhead catfish. We have caught everything but eels. There are also beavers, snapping and painted turtles, and muskrats. The river has brown, rainbow and native brook trout.

Big Mick and I went fishing in Maryland during the last FSGW Getaway which was attended by many Mudcatters. I've also fished with Sandy Paton's son, Dave. They're both a lot of fun at the water.

I'm a retired airline employee and I have, in the past, fished once a year in various places in Iceland for brown and sea trout and for salmon. I was supposed to go to Co. Waterford, Ireland with Icelandic friends last year but illness in their family cancelled the trip.

I fish with lures, bait and fies. I don't have years of experience as a fly fisherman so my "luck" with that medium has more to do with whether or not I'm in the company of someone who can pick the proper bugs.

Chalk streams in southern England! Ice fishing in Ontario! Sounds great!

Anything, anytime, anywhere! I like it all. But in recent years I have discovered the same thing about fishing as I did about hunting: simply being there is far more important than the actual fishing or hunting. I do all of my hunting with my camera nowadays and would do the same about fishing if I had the scuba equipment, certification, etc..

I love eating the fish I have caught. Recipes? Nah! In my opinion there is nothing better for fish than salt, pepper, and butter. To me, anything else disguises the flavor rather than enhances.

So, Bert, when do we organize the First Annual Mudcat Party Boat?!!

I love to go fresh water fishing. Never had the opportunity to try salt water fishing so I don't have any of the right tackle for it. I prefer using a good free spool bait casting reel and assorted spinner baits although I do use ultra light gear and tiny silver and white jigs for smallmouth over on the Wapsipinicon river.

I don't do much bait fishing or still fishing although it would be fun to learn all the details of bobber (float) fishing as practiced in the U.K.

I'm a pretty keen fisherlady.
I learned from my dad. He was the greatest fisherman of all. At the cottage I'd head out with my dad at the crack of dawn to go fishing. We would take along cold roast beef sandwiches and a thermos of something hot to drink for breakfast. I would fish for hours with my father. Other fisherman would wait until my dad headed out onto the lake. They wanted to see where he was going. My dad always knew where the fish were biting. Usually around some old sunken crib dock.
There were always live fish swimming in our bathtub and our fridge was stocked with worms and leeches. Usually the night before we would cook up some cornmeal to make mama ligga balls for catching fresh water pike. Some of the pike were so big you could pick them up right out of the water into your arms.
My dad also taught me how to scale and fillet a fish properly too. It is a disgusting job but someones got to do it.

Hi Walkinman, how's this for a true fishing story. Two years ago a friend of mine "Pedro" was ice fishing on Lake Scugog in Ontario. After drilling the hole (with a manual auger) through 14 inches of ice, he baited his short rod with a dead minnow, He then went over to a second hole to set up a tip-up with a live minnow. Glancing around he noticed his rod moving but was too late to prevent it going down the hole. Fortunately he had a spare. anyway about 2 hours later - the same hole he felt something nibbling on his bait, he carefully set the hook and drew the fish out of the hole, a 2.5 lb walleye with his missing rod still attached. I was not there that day but I do believe him.

Oh Neo - you brought back some nasty memories of Chinese food cartons filled with huge worms in the refrigerator. I was punished and banned to the chum bucket every time I snarled myself in a paying customer's line. Spent a lot of time chumming.
My favorite time was the trip home after night fishing. I had a sleeping bag set up on top and was rocked to sleep with the stars.

Dont want to spoil your fun - but isnt it handy that fish cant SCREAM? What other animal would you kill by dragging it along with a hook in its mouth until its too weak to put up a fight? Imagine a fish with vocal chords and imagine the sound it would make as you pull it out of the water. Or could it be that fish dont feel any pain??

I don't think fish feel pain in the same way that we do,their senses come from audio, so I think shouting at them would cause more "pain" than the hook.I don't think singing quietly to them would do much good either.

Freshwater only, as I live in the cradle of the Great Lakes. I've got secret little spots around the Bruce Peninsula which will still cough up some nice smallmouth bass. The big perch are gone, but my Dad used to help us catch 'em when I was a kid...what passes for a jumbo these days is ridiculous.

Yes I fish, and it's the only regular sporting act of cruelty I indulge in. Living in Indiana confines me to fresh water most of the time, although I've had fun trying my luck in salty places like Nassau and Orange Beach, FL and Oguncuit, ME. I'm strictly catch-and-release in fresh waters, because I don't enjoy bony meals. Ocean fish are another story. Overall, I find it an excellent excuse to drink outdoors.

I love to fish, mostly freshwater. I keep trout and throw back most everything else. I've gone out on the Chesapeake Bay for rockfish (striped bass to everyone else) and went out on a party boat in Florida one time. I've done some flyfishing and had a little success, but flyfishing is fun even if you don't catch anything.

i used to do a lot of fishing with my grandpa at Shand Dam...he would put on the minnows, and i would catch the perch. i fished until i started to feel sorry for the minnows.

Oh yes, when I get the chance (which isn't often nowadays) but I will fish for anything, anywhere I can. Sea, canal, lake, river, gravel pit, stream. Even take a short 4 metre whip on cycle tours!! Taken fishing rods to Spain, Malta, Greece, Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland and collapsable rods almost evrywhere I go.

I have a funny story about fishing.
One time while fishing with my dad he got his pole snagged. I was dragging the boat backwards to help him loosen it up the line but something went wrong. Not sure what, but some how the pole fell into the water and sunk. My dad was terribly upset because that fishing pole cost him a lot of money. We were in a deep part of the lake. There was no way that pole was to be found.
The following year we were out fishing one day and my dad has something big biting. When he reels it in guess what he caught?
The old fishing pole. Can you believe it? We laughed so hard, I peed in my pants. Only time I should have used the bucket Bert.

There's nothing like sneaking up on a pool in a trout stream where you've spotted a big lunker surface feeding. You watch a fly flutter above the surface, and mentally try to match it to a dry fly pattern in your box. As you note that the wings are a slight blue tint, the body black, it lands upon the water and floats slowly into the vision of the trout. He rises slowly so as not to frighten the fly, then with a sudden jump and gulp he has his tasty morsel.

Your fingers tremble a bit as you tie your pattern on your tippet line, then, being careful not to throw a shadow or move your rod or line in the sight of the fish, you pump out some line and hold your breath as you release it, hoping the cast will be perfect, because you may not get another. You watch the fly land upon the stream gently, and float, displaying a slight, slow spin in the water with the vagaries of current, and it floats into the trout's feeding zone. Again you watch as the trout rises, looking closely at the fly, the moment of truth as he gulps it, the pressure of line, tension of rod, the thrill in connection.

We were on this stern trawler at Rye (Sussex, England) that we'd rented for a day's fishing. Half a dozen working class guys dressed all scruffy for the occasion to do some real fishing.

We'd just got on the boat and were waiting for the captain to get his act together and get moving. When at the nearby launching ramp there arrives a real fancy speedboat bright metallic red, fancy stripes and the biggest outboard you've ever seen.

Two skinny young men and two gorgeous girls in skimpy bikinis. Well these you folks were really Putting on the Style strutting about and making quite a show of getting their boat into the water. They were making quite sure that everyone was watching their VERY expensive boat.

They finally get in the boat, but instead of heading slowly down the channel obeying the speed limit; they make a high speed full circle around the channel throwing up a huge wake. By this time of course all eyes were upon them. They go haring downstream right over the loading ramp which they have just used. There is this loud CRUMP as their outboard hits the concrete loading ramp. Then complete silence as they drift slowly out of control downstream with everyone watching them.

I saw a news headline today about a group of ex-Navy men,70 + years old,who (against the advice of the Coast Guard) sailed a retired WWII ship from Europe to be used as part of a museum. A year ago I would have cheered them on. Now all I could think was "Great! Damn fools won't be satisfied to get themselves killed, they will drag Dave (the ancient mariner) down with them." Anyone who goes to sea is taking a risk. These guys had a fair sized ship and some were experienced mature (they were all mature) sailors. They knew the risks and were prepared to accept them.

It's not as if they were weekend sailors. I think that, just because they were old, people thought that they might not be competant.
Well the young gainsayers were proved wrong. So three cheers for old farts everywhere.

Emergency services put their lives at stake in many fields, from ski rescue, mountain rescue, fire departments, coastguards, police, and so on and so on. But I don't hear anyone say we should stop people from skiing or mountain climbing. Of couse it's mostly YOUNG people who go skiing and mountain climbing.

Bert, bring your gear to the gathering. You can cast right off my deck. I've caught a few. Last was a weak (week, weke) fish. It was small, about 12 in, but good to eat. The Captain of the charter boat my friends and I go out on taught me how to cook and eat Sea Robins. They're really good. No more waste.

The stream near my home runs through a couple of golf courses, public parks and a nature center. It borders public land and roadways and it forms the boundary of many people's backyards. There are a few very private places in its 5 or 6 mile length which are kept that way by overgrown undergrowth and other natural obstacles.

There is one pool I particularly like for the variety of fish it holds, its stillness and its isolation. I can fly fish there backhanded and crosshanded with a short rod standing in shorts on the clear sandy bottom with sunfish nibbling my toes.

I was there one day with a lure that I had seen kids using somewhere else a few days earlier. The lure intrigued me because it made such an unholy row and because of the violent topwater strikes that it induced from largemouth bass all over the water they were fishing. You're going to laugh if you've never seen one in action. It was 2 inches long and had propellers on it. One on the front, one on the rear with a hook trailing. I bought one and took it to the pool to try, chugging it along the weedline. On the 2nd cast, it sent a shockwave to the stomach of a basking pickerel which launched itself from shallow water towards the plug.

If you have ever seen a car accident and have been unable to affect the outcome, that is about the closest I can come to describing what it looked like as the fairly large pickerel created a moving submarine-like hump and wake in the water as it closed in on the lure. It seemed to take the fish 10 minutes to reach its prey but, in reality, it was a sprint of a second or 2. The meeting was unstoppable and the impact was immense and violent.

I let the little alligator go afterwards and marvelled at the tooth marks in my plug.

Hi again, SINS, yes they ignored the coastguard warnings, but I would have done the same myself - (tee hee).

But a few points in their favour, 1. They were out of the jurisdiction of any coastguard for most of their journey, and 2. by the time they'd have got in range of the US coastguard they'd have been pretty much home and dry. And 3. Regarding the seaworthyness of their ship, it is a steel vessel which has been afloat for fifty years. Whereas many modern ocean going racing yachts are unproven plastic boats. But they get no warnings. When i first read of the warning I thought it was just age discrimination and I still do.

Geez, I'd LOVE to make this gathering. We have wild and wooly Sins, Xenajeri...........Sounds exciting. But the best part would be watching Bert cast his "gear" off the dock into that cold water. I guess you must have some real long gear that hangs down pretty good Bert! I guarantee that afterwards you'll look like half a cockatail wienie and two raisins, but whatever turns you on.

I go trout fishing every now and then with my dad.

We go to this lovely stream/small river in the middle of some woods, on a hillside, all covered with trees.

The water is crystal clear, and the very tranquil. The wildlife carrys on around you... and the whole thing is idyllic.

I can see the trout swimming past - there's plenty of them - and I can see my little fly as the little gits swim past it, ignoring it totally.

Now, all this silence is broken, til I loose it completely and try to charm my fish by singing at them. I often think it would be quicker to get in the water with them and tickle them out.. Rather than stand there with me rod, fly and wait for the thickest stupidest trout in the West to pass by.

Dry fly on chalkstreams for me (if there was a heaven, it would have the Kennet or the Test running through it, and I'd be allowed to fish it!) - plus salmon on the Tweed when I'm lucky/feeling flush.
I used to like pike-fishing, using plugs and spinners, because pike are bloody good to eat - a wonderful delicate flavour. I got put off, though, when I opened one up to find a half-digested rat inside. Irrational and squeamish, I know, but there you have it!

Used to live in Gulf Breeze, FL, a piece of land sticking out between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach. This was back in the '60s before it got built up. They used to bribe you to build on the beach, but that's another story. The old US Navy live oak reserve is there. Used live oak for masts, etc. back in the wooden ship days.

Well anyway I used to get up early and hit the fishing pier on the beach before heading to work. Occasionally I'd get lucky and bag 3 or 2 Spanish Mackeral. Brought them home and left them in the sink for my wife to clean. Not to popular, but she's still my wife.

Don't know why I did that. It only takes a minute to clean one. I guess because I could. Those years on the beach were the best.

Could buy a house on the beach then for 6-7000. Ten times that now or more.

Matt - You have never ridden a roller coaster, never gone fishing???? Get your butt to NYC. We'll spend a day at Coney Island - the Cyclone is still voted the "Best Wooden Roller Coaster" in the world. Then we'll go fishing - surf or deep water, your choice. Anybody want to join us????

Well, how about an outing to the Natural History Museum? ou see the dinosaurs and the Giant Blue Whale. There - now we're back to fishing.

Just remembered a day of fishing off a bridge with my brother - not a nibble. He wanted to go home. I complained that I wouldn't leave until I at least got a nibble on my worm. Yup - he grabbed the swollen dead slimy thing and ate it. We went home.

I was out again on Tuesday night, caught 3 ( 2 walleye and a large perch), The lake was a bit sludgy after a recent warm spell, but I will be out again tomorrow. Remember " A bad day fishing is better that a good day working".

I used to ponder why I found fishing to be so attractive. Then one day I discovered the answer in a quotation which, I believe, came from Issac Walton and which I can only produce from memory:

- just one more cast...maybe behind that rock...over there, at the edge of the shadows...maybe if I switched to a Hulapopper...perhaps a midge...maybe a chunk of squid...gobbaworms...if I cast over there in the shallows...or maybe at the head of the pool...just beyond the sandbar...maybe I should cruise the wrecks...perhaps if I wait 'til the tide changes...those lillypads look promising... and so it goes - each cast filled with hope and promise.

I dunno' Allan. For you, I can understand that, but I've had lots of folks I know who are real nuts for bass fishing.........They all got a megabucks boat with a monster outboard, 17 tackle boxes, 3841 crankbaits, exotic rods and reels, and a pickup with 92 B.A.S.S. stickers covering it and they go out and blast off to some spot, troll along, cast a lot, work the bait.........And then after about 45 minutes of nothing, the rest of the day is spent with a nimber 8 over the side waitin' for a crappie.

lol... ya'll are funny. I love fishing! I grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and fished the Laguna Madre every weekend with my father. We would get up at 4am, go and gas up the boat and be on his favorite spot at sunrise. We had all his homemade poles, a bucket of shrimp and minnow, and a cooler with beer, Diet Coke, cheese, and homemade sausage. We would be out there going from spot to spot until we caught the limit. And of course, nothing beats sitting around on the porch, fish frying in the deep fryer, drinking and telling stories of the one that got away. By the way, red fish and speckled trout are my absolute Favorite! Yeah, that's the only thing I miss about my father, the bastard. :-) If anyone gets a fishing trip together in the south, I am sooo there. Gig'em!

Yeah, I see those guys all the time. I put them in the same class as tourists. They don't really understand fishing in it's purest sense. Theirs is a game of technology and numbers. The fishfinder locates the fish and then after a zillion casts (cast&crank, cast&crank, cast&crank...) one of the fish gets so pissed off that he attacks the bait just to make it stop! If none of the fish responds, then the "fisherman" powers off to another site, washing the shoreline with his wake. I can't tell you how many times I (in my canoe or in a friend's small boat) have had to battle the waves caused by one of these contraptions. It has just about put me off entirely from lake fishing.

The other piece of this is that I cannot fathom how so many people seem to be able to afford all of that high-powered equipment. I am always amazed when I see a huge bassboat parked in front of a tiny hovel of a house. But, then, I am always amazed at how many people seem to make far more money than I do.

Disclaimer: I know that I am exhibiting a large amount of prejudice here. I am aware that there are some bassboaters who behave responsibly. I just haven't seen a lot of them.

I don't know what you're talking about, but my dad and I had a little shallow water boat with a motor that his father left him and one of those tiny motors to use in shallow water. And we never used one of those electronic fish-finders. To me, that just takes all the fun out of fishing and it's almost like cheating (in some odd way)

Were you ever in a boat with two other fishermen and you were the only one catching anything? When you catch the first one, everyone cheers and pat you on the back. The second one gets you a mild "alright". After that, the situation deteriorates rapidly. Soon, no one will speak to you. You try bizarre salt-water lures that are sure to frighten the average lake trout, and they hit it like it's the Special of the Day. Soon, your companions no longer net your fish for you, they grab your line and haul it up, swinging the flopping fish into your lap. You have to get your own beer, even though the guy in the middle is sitting on the cooler. They refer to you as "the Kingfish" or "Mr Hot$hit".

This has happened to me twice.

Yep, LEJ. I shared a boat with a Hot$hit. He felt so bad about it that he even tied on a grotesque silver spoon lure that I had made for him from a real spoon as a sort of gag gift. A six-pound bass immediatly devoured the lure! I guess that took some of the sting out of my going home with an empty cooler that day.

Mm-m-m-m-m. Perhaps I should market that sucker...

I have a friend from whom several women friends and I rent a boat. We go out along the Jersey shore monthly in the summer. We pay about 35 -45 dollars and that includes the tip for the first mate. (Michael, the captains son). His boat only carries about 8 people though and we always have a ball. It's funny, but all his buddies think we're all gay. We bring shrimp cocktail and subs (that's grinders to you Yankees), (Dagos to you westerners), and beer and wine. If we go on a night trip, we bring candles and linen and have a wonderful dinner from what each person brings.

We have caught many fish and we share them, so noone goes away empty handed.

Woman can be so much more civilized.

Well, anyway, Bert, we can get him, but we have to book him in February or he's all booked up. It's only eight people at a time because it's a small boat. I don't like the big charters. Everyone just throws up and gets their lines tangled.

No, Sins, that's the best part. I don't know if they do it for men, but they bait your hooks (I bait my own) and take the fish off the line and clean the fish at the end of the trip. I love it!
