Subject: Hoist the Jolly Roger
From: GUEST,Rob O
Date: 15 Jan 01 - 10:18 AM

Hey all,

Heard a friend singing a little "priate shanty" this
weekend at a RevWar re-enactment and was wondering if
anyone knew the entire listing of the lyrics, or knew
where to find them, and such.

The chorus goes like this:

With tar on our pig tails
and blood on our rapiers
we'll hoist the skull and crossbones
for sure we'll take no prisoners.
It's high-ho away boys,
we sail for bonny bay boys!
We hoist the Jolly Roger at the break of Day!

Thanks!

Rob

The song you want is by Tanglefoot. It is called Traighli Bay, You can find it on their cd called Saturday Night in Hardwood Lake. It is an excellent song. Also check out their web site, it may have the lyrics (www.oncomdis.on.ca/tanglefoot.htm). If you still cant find it send a message back, and I will type it out for you.

Shouldn't bonny bay be 'Botany Bay'?

Ok try these chords.
Verse....Am(hold several bars) F C E7 Am E7 Am repeat once
then go to...
Chorus....C F C G C Am F Dm F G C
Good luck!
Tanglefoot is one of my favorite bands in the southern Ontario area.(they also tour the States, and England) If you ever get a chance to see them, don't pass up the opportunity, they put on a great show. With almost all original Canadian content.

Hey,

I'm having a little trouble with the chords matching up top what I heard sung, but part of that I attribute to the guy who sang it for me this weekend was singing sans accompanyment. I take it the last line of the chorus using the chord run [F]Hoist the [Dm] Jolly Roger at the [F] break [G] of [C]day

I think?

I need to get me a copy of that CD... hope I can find it at the local music joint.... *fingers crossed*

Rob

Hi Folks,

This is a perfect opportunity for me to repeat a request I've made in the past. If anyone has any of the chords for any of Tanglefoot's tunes, I would greatly appreciate it if you would post them.

These guys don't often get to Nova Scotia, but I did manage to see them here at the Lunenburg Folk Festival a few years ago. They're coming back in March.

Thanks,

Dan

I hope that I am not out of line here but Tanglefoot are a great band. Al Parrish (the big red haired Bass player) actually wrote this song before he joined Tanglefoot, it was previously recorded with the defunct "Brean Derg Muc" when he played with them. Anyhow they are part of the concert listed below and it is a not for profit organization and a really good night. So if you are in the area please feel free to support. The Folk Show is now apparently available on the Internet, it is on Saturdays.

The 6th Annual CFMU Freewheeling Benefit Concert Sat. Feb. 24th. 6:30 PM. Sharp! (doors open at 6 pm.). The Knights of Columbus Hall --1494 Wallace Road, Oakville (one block east of Speers and Third Line). Tickets--$15.00 -available in Jan. -at- Payne's Music Store, 222 King St. East in Hamilton. Notes Music Store, 35 Lakeshore W. in Oakville. The Knights Of Columbus Hall, Oakville. (see above). OR by calling-- TOLL-FREE- 1-877-263-9632. The Line-up: and WHAT A LINE-UP THIS YEAR!!! JOHN PRINCE AND A PIECE OF THE ROCK TANGLEFOOT STEEL RAIL EVE GOLDBERG PAUL LANGILLE SCOTT CAMERON SMITH There will be great raffle prizes, door prizes and excellent c.d.'s for sale.

Don Hornbeck: I THINK the song you want is "The Song of the Jolly Roger" by C. F. Chudleigh Candish, published by J. Curwen & Sons, Ltd, 1911. (I make no guarantees.)

See, for example, musicroom.com. There might be other sources.

Subject: Lyr Add: TRAIGHLI BAY (Al Parrish)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 20 Dec 05 - 11:36 PM

This must be what Rob O was looking for.

Lyrics copied from http://www.tanglefootmusic.com/music/captured-lyrics.htm:

TRAIGHLI BAY
Al Parrish

It was June and it was hot
When on board the ship we got,
With shot and powder for the guns,
And a hogshead full of rum,
And salt cod to last until the winter squalls.
We made for the southwest
Where the hunting would be best,
Where the Spanish ships of trade
Down with Aztec silver laden
Were the fairest game for gentlemen of fortune.

CHORUS: And with tar on our pigtails and blood on our rapiers,
We'll fly the skull and crossbones and by God we'll take no prisoners.
It's hi-ho away, boys. We'll sail from Traighli Bay, boys.
Hoist the Jolly Roger at the break of day.

From up the crow's nest then,
Called the third mate, Mr. Flynn,
"Set the course and hold 'er steady
And for action make 'er ready.
There's a Spanish merchant off the starboard bow."
We raised the black flag high.
Fast the Spaniard turned to fly.
We followed in her wake
Until we could overtake,
And dismasted her with chain from cannon fired. CHORUS

We pulled up alongside
With our grappling hooks and lines.
Guns and cutlasses in hand,
On the gunwales we did stand,
Every hand from the Captain to the cabin boy.
Saw three dead the chains had flayed,
Then we raised and crossed our blades.
To their mates we gave our best,
As the sun set in the west,
With pikes and swords, pistols, fists and feet. CHORUS

From the darkness till the dawn,
As the battle raged on,
We fought with manly fitness
As we meant to leave no witness.
We lost Mr. Flynn and one leg from the cabin boy,
But with their treasure we retired,
And we set a canvas fire,
Left her sinking to the deep,
Where their silent bones will sleep,
And we forged a leg of gold for the cabin boy. CHORUS

It was August and still warm
When to Traighli we returned.
Fifty-eight days on the main
And we've no need to sail again.
We've gold and silver more than we could spend.
Now half a century has passed,
And of that crew, I am the last.
Fifty years I've roamed these docks,
And when I get a chance to talk,
I tell of how I got this golden leg. CHORUS
