I've never been to Kaustinen - though it, and Finland in general, is on my "wish list". Is it always held in early July ?

Someone here may be able to help me: I'm thinking about going to Denmark in the summer. Tønder Festival looks wonderful, but rather large. Are there any other (smaller) festivals that anyone can recommend ?

I'm hoping to somehow be able to combine a festival with visiting some of the rune stone monuments and/or the pre-history centre at Lejre.

Last June I attended the Nyckelharpa festival in Österbybruk, Sweden.
I think it is always the weekend before midsommer. there were hundreds
of nyckelharpas~yet it was not a huge festival. In September or October
there is a Nordic Music Fewstival in Minneapolis/St.Paul area. I have been to this too. Also a Scandinavian festival in Turlock "CA in late Sept. though it may not have been this year, Scandifest or Skandifest,
is (or was?) fun--the best part being the re-created villages of Sami and Vikings...

Now, Jeanie, here's my plan for your next summer, includes a fair portion of Finnish (well, not only...) music:

Haapavesi Folk June 28th - July 4th (klik for the list of performers, unfortunately in Finnish only)
Kihaus in Rääkkylä July 8th - 11th (programme still under "construction", that's why the pages are not up to date)
Kaustinen Festival July 10th - 18th
After that you could - ad lib - hitchhike through Sverige, see the rune stones along the way, and finally attend the Tønder Fv;-).

Btw, notice, folks, that there is a distinction between 'Scandinavian' and 'Nordic': the latter should be used when The Finnish and the Saami are included (beside the Danish, Farish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish).

Sorry to say that the Finnish festivals will have to be for another year, because of the dates....unless I win the lottery and can pack up work in the meantime ! Danish festivals, in late July and August are the possibilities for me this year.

I'm going to kaustinen this year, I've been looking at festival sites for finland over the past few weeks... Have you been to kaustinen AND Kihaus?, if yes, which do you prefer and for what reasons?. I like festivals that are intimate and have camping at the festival site, can you describe the atmosphere of these fests?
Which of these festivals would you point a visitor in the direction of?. I know tastes vary but I would like to at least hear a comparison, I'm starving for information and opinion!!.

AKS, I play the accordion, and traditional Finnish music is my favorite kind to play on it. I'm in the US, and I've only ever heard one person play traditional Finnish music on any instrument (she was playing the accordion though), but it was before I developed an intereste in that kind of music, and I don't remember what it sounded like when she played it. I've learned everything I play from sheet music.

So, as you can imagine, I play it the way I play it, but I have no idea how Finnish people play it. Can you recommend some groups or musicians from whom I can get CDs?

I'm sure AKS can give you a pretty good answer to your questions as well, but here is my little rave!
I started with Irish tunes about 123 years ago and then, a few years ago was picked up and whisked away by Finnish music!!
I play the tunes on Bouzouki and Mandolin, I've learnt most of them from cd. My favoirite cd is full of AMAZING TUNES and they're very easy to pick up, really uncluttered playing, the cd is by a band called
* "Ottopasuuna" and the album is selftitled. Ottopasuuna's other album is "suokaasua"(swamp gas). it's also great but I find the other one has more appealing tunes(they are older too).
My second favourite band is
* 'pirnales' I only have 1 of their cd's -"parasta ennen" (best before). It's a very different style, but amazing as well and full of killer tunes for learning.
There are other bands like
* "troka", I have their music but they're not my favourite tunes, very interesting though.
* "Jpp" are the legends, kind of similar sound to Troka, I don't own cds though(have to get some)
* Varttina do some great tunes but usually only 1 per album (with the exception of the first one which has lots
As far as buying them,,The cheapest way for me has been from Amazon. I'm in Australia but it's stil cheaper for me to get European cds from usa, no retail markup. although you might have trouble with getting ottopasuuna from amazon. Not always the cheapest but the best range of Finnish music is of course, 'Digelius music', in Helsinki. You can buy from them online they ship internationally, they're friendly people and they DO have both ottopasuuna albums and the 3 pirnales ones............it's all well worth the expense and trouble, I just wish I knew more people who played these etherial, nordic sounds..

I have been to Kihaus a couple of times, but haven't managed to reach Kaustinen yet (it's only been there for some 30 y's now, my excuse still being the distance - ca 400 km, never mind someone coming there from overseas!), so I can not compare them personally. But those who have attended both, say that there is no great difference in the (friendly) atmosphere, only that Kaustinen is 'bigger' in every respect - the variety of performers included. I know there are people who go to both, just because their favourites will appear at both as well.

I must admit not being a specialist on Finnish accordion music (harmonikka in Fin), but here are a couple of names with which to start "googleing", eg.:

The one who has influenced most 'adult' (I mean the generation who started after the war, about) players was Viljo Vesterinen (1907-1961), another would be Lasse Pihlajamaa (in his latter 80's) and third Veikko Ahvenainen, who has done much to introduce the accordion into the 'classical' scene, as well.

Of the 'modern' players, there are two musts: Maria Kalaniemi and Kimmo Pohjonen, both absolute masters that have played in various bands and on their own, and right now do it worldwide. Kimmo's recent repertoire is a bit experimental (if I may say:), combining various traditions, but you can hear his 'Finnish' playing for example on records by Pinnin pojat (a duo with Arto Järvelä of JPP; note that some of the stuff is done with tongue-heavily-in-cheek).

Helsingin kaksrivisnaiset is worth trying to get your hands (or perhaps rather ears) on, as well.

What comes to bands, I only add one name to Andy's list: Tallari, and here's a list of bands to check for some more stuff (unfortunately some do not have their pages in Eng at all, or then they are 'under construction').

Thanks Aks for that info!, I've been doing a bit of clicking and have a fair bit ahead!!. Some of those band links are in english and some of them have the option and some of them (as you say) are in Finnish, these ones I look at blankly, admiring the pretty words and then realise I'm not learning much about THIS band but mabye I'm learning Finnish.
I was thinking about Kihaus but if the bands are mostly the same then I'd better conserve my money for a bigger spend at Kaustinen, there are a lot of cd's on my wish-list. The guest on the "Kaustinen festy" thread had wonderful things to report about that event!, it makes me so excited!, we don't get all that much Finnish music in Australia(a little, but it's pretty rare)..moocowpoo

Moocowpoo, would you mind telling me the names of some of the Finnish pieces that you like to play?

Interestingly, when I play traditional Finnish music (mostly waltzes), people think they're from a lot of very non-Nordic places. Usually they think I'm playing music from Italy, France, or Eastern Europe. The most common response I get is "That sounds like music from the 'Godfather' movies". I tell them that it sounds to me like the music has some of the dark and moody qualities of Russian music, combined with, or alternating with some of the brightness of Scandinavian music.

I like to hear people guesses as to what it is I'm playing. It's really interesting to hear what people come up with! I haven't heard anyone ask if I'm playing the stuff you mention but the other day I was playing a Macedonian tune and someone asked if it was Finnish!!, that took me by surprise.
I am very drawn to the darker side of Finnish music, mabye that's what darth vader was on about...we all thought it was about some sort of inner power but he was actually a huge fan of Nordic music and was sick of all that hip hop luke was listening to, thought it would be more in his intrests to learn a few Finnish tunes...AAND!! I'm absoutely CERTAIN that darth vader played Accordian! (only because he always wanted to play the harmonica but could never seem to get the breathing right)..Anyway, I was saying... I don't know how widely these tunes are played I just love them.
these are the ones I know on 'ottopasuuna', self titled (this is really a great one I recommend it so highly, fantastic accordian by one of the masters, Kimmo pohjonen(as aks was saying) and really good Mandocello and Bouzouki Accompaniment too!(it's on green linnet records) anyway see if you can track these tunes down:

About the darker side: one of the things I like best is the way the music moves from the darker, moodier sound to a brighter one, and then back, etc. To me, it gives the music a wonderful sense of irony.

Holy shit! People who aren't me have posted to this thread since last year! Swell.

So, uh, almost forgot: the 6th Anual Nordic Roots Festival is happening in Mpls. this coming weekend. Once again, I'm going to attend, should I survive til Friday. What's that? Ah... Yeah, I know: I never wrote one of my famous, eagerly-anticipated reviews of the 5th NRF, did I? But never fear! I will not disappoint you this year, my legions of fans. If I survive the NRF, I promise to write a review. You're welcome. I'll even throw in my sketchy memories of the 5th NRF... for half price. Lucky bastards.

Nice line-up this year. Short on Finnish bands (a little more than 1/2 of Frigg), but the inclusion of a Danish band for the first time almost makes up for that. Here is the schedule, even though I'll prob'ly be the only Mudcatter there, eh?

Evening shows: The great young-ish Swedish group Harv, and the interesting Norwegian trio Flukt. 8:00 PM.

   Sunday, September 19:
Afternoon shows: The duo of Swedes Mats Edén & Tina Quartey, and "Roger Tallroth (from Väsen) and Friends," which will include Olov Johansson and Karen Tweed, apparently. Yay. 2:30 PM.

Evening shows: Norwegian/Finnish group Frigg, which, to be honest, I've never actually heard. But you can't go wrong with that many Järveläs in the group. And of course those famous-ass Swedes, Väsen, who are so damned famous that I refuse to link them here. (Just kidding) Once again, they'll be playing as a trio, minus wussy percussionist André "Scared to Fly" Ferrari. 8:00PM.

Festival pass is $80.00. Should anyone be there, which they won't be, look for a goofy-looking fat man with a shaved head, hopefully in my customary place at the front of the line. Feel free to say "hi." Unless you plan on following it up by kicking me in the balls and screaming "Go back to Iran, you commie fuck!"

Don't know if it has been said earlier on but Emma Härdelin sings in the group Triakel as well as in Garmarna. In that group she is accompanied by an organ and a fiddle. Their songs are in Swedish but if you know the language they're well worth buying. I've only got two records: Triakel and another one with mainly christmas songs.

After a truly depressing 6 weeks away from home I now have something to look forward to, especially after reading through this thread again.

At the end of this month I am off to Finland for my first ever trip there. The flights, accomodation and even train tickets have been sorted out, but the highlight will be to see and hear Gjallarhorn live for the first time. I will be seeing them in Jakobstad and in their (I understand) home town of Vaasa. I missed seeing them in the UK a couple of years ago and then again last year in Groningen so a double dose is definately required.

I've been enjoying their cd's for a while now and those of Garmarna as well, shame they don't tour so often. I understand that Garmarna will be in the US on tour next year so keep your eyes peeled.

I would just like to add, that all the enquiries regarding my trip that I directed to various offices in Finland, either by email or phone, have all been answered with incredible efficiancy and friendliness, I feel as though I have been made welcome before I have even thought about heading off to the airport.

A couple of weeks ago I returned from Finnie, I went to the Kaustinen folk festival(9th-18jul). For someone who is completely in love with Finnish tunes, this was the perfect tonic. At times it was a bit overwhelming!, I almost fell over, delerious with glee(nothing to do with pear cider).. Mad fidedlers JPP played,Swedish, (high energy) band 'Fomp' played, they were both amazing but the highlights were the unexpected surprises, an amazing tune being played by a busking kid, smaller bands with no cd but incredible tunes and energy.........(lucky I had an MD recorder with me). I'm going next year and I would highly recommend it to ANYONE who has the time and even vaguest of inclinations.    Next year I'll also try to get to Kihaus festival(a smaller one, just before COWstinen). Also, A Cittern player I met at Kaustinen recommended Haapavesi fest too (I haven't looked into that one yet)www.haapavesifolk.com.
Sledge, Have a wonderful time in Finland, it's a shame you missed the festivals, but you might find ones I don't know about and in the light months, there are always great buskers in Helsinki and it's such an amazing country anyway. If you like endless forests and lakes (and muumi-moomintrolls), you'll be completely sated

Sledge, Gjallarhorn are amazing. They were at Sidmouth in 2002, which is where and when I saw them -- kind of accidentally. It was pouring down rain, and the pavilion where they were playing was the only venue in town close enough to run to. Oh, never has hardship been so rewarded -- their performance is my standout memory from Sidmouth that year. Even my two-year-old was entranced.

Gjallarhorn's CDs are very true to their live performance -- except live is even better. How I envy you!

Oh, and yeah, even though no-one else is going to the NRF, I thought I should mention that there's been a cancellation: "Harv has been forced to cancel their Nordic Roots Appearance Friday due to illness. They will be replaced with a festival overture including Swap, Karen Tweed and May Monday (Maria Kalaniemi, Timo Alakotila, etc. are going to be there?! No way... -LR), and Mats Eden with Tina Quartey. Flukt remains on the bill Friday with the show starting at 8:00 pm."

Had a great time in Finland, warm and hospitalable even when the morning temperature was 0C. Beautiful it most definately was with the trees all turning gold. Walking rouind Helsinki was good, a busy place but I didn't feel crowded or my nostrils full of fumes and the fresh fried fish on the harbour front was sooooo tasty, I can almost still taste the garlic sause though. Glad I did that after I had done my trip to the sauna, could have been a bit fragrent otherwise.

Met the band and they are truely wonderful folks, hope I didn't overdo the start-struck fan bit, anyone with an inerterest in Nordic music should see them or check out their cd's, or even wait and try the dvd once its released which I was told should be soon-ish.

The only thing now is when will I be going back to visit and see more of the country?

Speaking of Gjallarhorn: They'll be at the 8th Annual Nordic Roots Festival in Minneapolis, September 28th to October 1st, 2006. Here's the schedule:

Thursday, September 28th: Only one show this night, at 8:00 PM: Talented (but 2/3rds arrogant prick) band Väsen, with special guest Darol Anger.
$18 advance / $20 day of show.

Friday, September 29th: No afternoon show, and then two concerts at 8:00 PM: Vajas, a Norwegian/Saami electronic, yoik type thing. Looks like Wimme with a fiddler. Then, like I said, it's those Swede-Finns Gjallarhorn. Looking forward to seeing their new guy, who plays a really interesting flute.
$22 advance / $25 day of show. (includes both shows)

Saturday, September 30th: An afternoon show, finally, at 2:00 PM: The Maria Kalaniemi Trio. "Celebrating the Finnish Tango." Yay.
$12 advance / $15 day of show.

Then, another 8:00PM show: Maria Kalaniemi playing solo, which should be lovely, followed by (recent internet superstars) Loituma. Haven't seen them for years and years, so that should be great. They're actually replacing shrill popstars, Värttinä. Oh, bummer. :P
$22 advance / $25 day of show. (again, includes both shows)

Sunday, October 1st: The afternoon show at 2:00 is an all-star thing, led by the legendary Timo Alakotila. I miss out on these all-star motherfuckers every year, so I'm hoping to make this show. $12 advance / $15 day of show

The evening show, at 8:00: Anglo-Swedish GODS Swåp. Can't wait. And, closing the NRF... Hoven fucking Droven. Who, along with Garmarna, do the best NRF finales, in my opinion. It's also their CD-release party for their upcoming two-disc release, "Jumping at the Cedar."
$22 advance / $25 day of show. (yeah, both shows)

A festival pass is available (for around $120.00, I think) from The Cedar. I've got one, you prob'ly don't. :P

So, I'll be the only Mudcatter there again, right?

I know just what would happen if I wrote a wistful, sighing wish that I could be there. Lepus would tell me what a useless sap I am for not making the journey and would have absolutely no sympathy. So I guess I'd better not say anything wistful out loud. Instead I'll check to see if any of the performers will be hitting the east coast on their way to MN...

I attended the Scandinavian fest a few years back..the year that Marie
Boine was not aboe to come due to surgery. I remember they said that the now-deceased senator Paul Wellstone worked really hard to help with Visas so that the performers were able to attend. I think it must have been 2002, the year after 9-11.

Gjallarhorn performed at the calif. world fest in July and I was able to hear them 3 out of 4 times they played. With viola, contrabass recorder, percussion and vocals, they serve up a tasty smorgasbord of scandinavian sounds! All the band members have studied music and are great performers and scholars. They were featured in an article in
Dirty Linen magazine issue for June/July 2006 issue.

Jenny told a story about some Swedish folks who were forced to march to the east for a year, and formed a village in Russia called Old Swede Town (Gamlasvensby) where the cultureal traditions, language and music survived in a more pure form than back in the old country. I would like to learn more about that story.

Oh, another NRF 2007 update: They've added "Ruth MacKenzie's Kalevala: Dream of the Salmon Maiden 10th Anniversary Concert," which is cool since I missed it the first time around. And the Lännen-Jukka String Band, which should be cool. Oh, and it looks like Hedningarna is out. Shit. So, kind of a puny NRF, this year: Not counting the Salmon Broad thing, only two days, and six concerts. Still, my fat ass will be there once more.
