We have talked about this movie. The soundtrack is now out, and I remember reading that there was going to be a televised concert (or had been?) with the performers from the soundtrack. (a) Has anyone listened to the soundtrack album? I looked at it, and thought, and spent my money instead on the new Smithsonian compilation of Big Bill Broonzy, Trouble in Mind (highly recommended); (b) Does anyone know anything about the concert? That would be worth seeing, I bet

I have had the soundtrack for over a month and I am still listening to it - which is a good sign for me. The other day I put it in my PC to listen to it and there are all kinds of stuff on the CD - links to web sites, screen savers, etc. I did see mention f a concert and perhaps a video, but I have not had time to check it out in detail. Will repost when I do.

Got this from the movie's soundtrack site. : "On May 24, 2000 the music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? was brought to life as a benefit concert for the new Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. The historic Ryman Auditorium was booked to offer Nashvillians an evening of sublime beauty. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen hired famed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker (Dylan's "Don't Look Back," "Monterey Pop," "The War Room") to record the show for posterity. Intertainer, the Broadband Entertainment Network, will offer the documentary on the internet on-demand, and via digital cable TV, and Artisan films has theatrical distribution rights. This highly anticipated film features Ralph Stanley, John Hartford as host, Holly Hunter to introduce the show, and virtually all of the soundtrack artists in a montage of rehearsal, backstage and performance clips. Check back here regularly, and we'll post as much information about this documentary as possible, including theatrical release dates and locations, links, and any news that comes our way."

And I got this on the Chicago Tribune site (from November), "That documentary, "Down From the Mountain," had a one-week Oscar-qualifying run in October, but its future release plans are still pending. Burnett is also formulating plans to reconvene the cast and repeat the show in some other cities, including Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C."

I'd like to see it, too. Haven't even seen the movie yet, damn me. :P Sort of half-planning to see it tonight.

Thanks, that was exactly what I wanted to know. ("Which is why I come to Mudcat first, when I don't know where to turn to" -- a satisfied customer, Toronto).

dwditty - it must be a different CD we've got over here in England, because ours just has the music. Not complaining though - it's pretty good anyway.

A friend of mone, who has seen the Coen film, points out that the Kossoy twins, Irene (Saletan) and Ellen (Christianson), performance of "I'll Fly Away" (from their 1950's recording titled )is used on the film's sound track, but the song is done by Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss on the CD. Can anyone explain this to me?

Sandy

That was indeed the Kossoys in the film (I understand the girls knew nothing about it), backed by Erik Darling on banjo. My guess is that the Coens wanted a different vocal sound there. In my opinion, however, Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch have the better version.

Great movie, great soundtrack CD.

As an electrician I do a lot of construction work. This entails listening to a lot of music, most of which is of the hard rock,head-banging type, played at ear-splitting volume levels.I would rather have no music at all than be subjected to this crap.

So it was with great pleasure when on the latest project, one of the sheetrockers started playing the CD of O Brother. What a change. None of the other guys liked it, but I sure did.He followed it with Tim O'Brian's "Red On Blond" and then a cd by a local duo playing guitar and fiddle "neo-traditional".

At last a kindred spirit in the construction trades. Turns out he is a bluegrass guitarist, who also plays mandolin, fiddle and some bass.

Down from the Mountain and O Brother soundtracks are great, but one that I like even more is "Songcatcher". I don't know if there's been a previous discussion of this, I suspect so, but it is FANTASTIC. The movie is amazing, too. Also featuring Gillian Welch, and Emmylou Harris, as well as Emmy Rossum, Rosanne Cash, Pat Carrol, and Hazel Dickens (+many more). Not to be missed!

This ties to another thread >Music @ your funeral
I've told my friends and family that I want them to belt out Angel Band at mine. reminds me of my late bro, a bluegrass picker.

Leigha.....Glad to see you have joined! There are about ten previous threads on Songcatcher. Enter Songcatcher in the filter box and set the refresh for a year and you'll pull them up.

I recently got the chance to see the video of the "Down from the mountain" concert on PBS. A real treat,I highly recomend it. Worth it for it's John Hartford content alone.
