Subject: Feeling that you wanted to go (Durante)
From: Chocolate Pi

Hey, folks, someone in another forum I frequent was asking:
>Ok, I quoted a song
>that my dad always sang
>I think it was done originally Jimmy Durante
>Does anyone know where
>"Did you ever get the feeling that you wanted to go
>and then you got the feeling that you wanted to stay"
>came from?
>This is not an "age identification" question.

Google, Dogpile, Altavista, CDNow, Amazon; all have yeilded no results. Any help?

It's from the 1944 film "Two Girls and a Sailor."

According to Amazon.com (click to see the soundtrack album), the correct title is "Did You Ever Have the Feeling That You Wanted to Stay?" by Jimmy Durante.

Subject: Did You Ever Have the Feelng That You Wntd to Stay
From: GUEST,Mel Windham
Date: 23 Sep 02 - 10:46 PM

Did you ever get the feeling that you wanted to go,
But still had the feeling that you wanted to stay.
You knew it was right, wasn't wrong.
Still you knew you wouldn't be very long.
Go or stay, stay or go,
Start to go again and change your mind again.
It's hard to have the feeling that you wanted to go,
But still have the feeling that you wanted to stay.
Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, si, do.
I'll go.
I'll stay.

(Note: I could not find a direct quote. I quoted the above from memory - but I may be off on some of the lines. At any rate, the quote is close - please forgive my inaccuracies.)

This song was originally sung by Jimmy Durante in the 1942 movie "The Man Who Came to Dinner", with Monty Woolley, Ann Sheridan, and Bette Davis.

In a much later movie, "My Stepmother Is an Alien", Dan Akroyd and Kim Bassinger sang that song, giving their impression of Jimmy Durante.

Of particular interest is when Jimmy sings "Do, re, me, fa, so, la, si, do (known as the "diatonic scale). Note the "si". At first I thought he was in error for not saying "ti". As it turns out, he was exactly correct in saying "si", as it was "si" in the original version of the song, where the first letters were from a biblical quote (one of the hymns to St. John -

Ut queant laxis (Can't say where they got the "do")
REsonare fibris
MIra gestorum
FAmuli tuorum
SOlve polluti
LAbil reatum
Sancte Iohannes (SI - not TI)

I found a couple of sound samples at

http://shopping.yahoo.com/shop?d=product&id=1921279546&clink=dmmu.artist
and transcribed this much:

...wouldn't wait very long.
It's tough to have the feeling that you wanted to go,
Still have the feeling that you wanted to stay.
Start to go.
Change your mind.
Start to go again but change your mind again.
It's tough to have the feeling that you wanted to go,
Still have the feeling that you wanted to stay.
Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, si, do.
I go.
I'll stay.
(SPOKEN: My butler gave me the wrong shirt!)
I'll go.
I'll stay.
I'm goin', I'm--, I'm stayin', but--
(SPOKEN: I know there's a million good-lookin' guys, but I'm ...)

Jimmy Durante was an old vaudevillian, God bless him, who seemed to feel(when I saw him on variety TV shows in the '50s & '60s) that the whole reason anyone was alive was to laugh, relax, and feel good, and his job was to make that happen. He comported himself accordingly. Another song he sang was "Hink-a-dink-a-doo". He had his own show for a bit, I think. He (almost) always closed with the line, "Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." He was a real prize, The Schnozz was. Less fun in the world without him.            Tw

I always enjoyed Jimmy Durante on early live TV musical shows. I remember him playing the Chez Paree nightclub in Chicago---the place where David Roth, the fine singer/songwriter's father was the matre dee (however that's spelled?). The bit in cartoons where the ending spotlight is swept up at the end of a show with a broom was from, as I recall it, from Jimmy Durante.

And even now I hear sound-alike actors imitating Jimmy on commercials here and now in this new century.----J.D. was one of a kind who just exuded the complete definitive feelings of what it meant to be a "nice guy"!

Short form (maitre d') of French phrase, Art T. "Maitre d'hote" originally, I think. Means the master of the table or dining room, responsible for training wait staff, greeting customers, and seeing that their experience at the particular eating establishment was comfortable/pleasant enough to make them want to be regulars, more or less.    Tw

"The Feeling That You Wanted To Go" was most likely written by Durante himself. He wrote most of the songs he preformed himself. Used in many recordings and used on his Rexall radio show with Garry Moore back in the 50s. Other songs with a special ring to it were "It's my Nose's Birthday"---"I'm The Guy Who Found The Lost Chord"....and "Hot Patatta."

I'd like to add I believe I do the best Durante impersonation in the country. Jimmy told me when I did his voice back in the forties, "You're an impostor."

idakingfish: If you mean THE CHRISTMAS SONG by Mel Tormé and Robert Wells, which begins "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."—it wasn't specifically written for any film, although it has appeared in many of them. It was first recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946.

See Wikipedia and IMDb.com.

Jimmy was the greatest! And sadly missed even now.

I thoroughly enjoyed him as a solo performer; however, when he teamed up with Lou Clayton and Eddie Jackson to recreate their old vaudeville trio, the act was amazing. God Bless you, boys, you made a lot of people smile!

The famous line from this (silly) song is quoted also in _The Ghostwriter_ (1979) by Philip Roth, toward the end of the novel.

Often, I have the feeling that I wanted to go, and yet I'd have the feeling I wanted to stay, and I look and look for the lyrics on old movies, watching Holiday Inn and Christmas in Connecticut over and over waiting for Jimmy Durante to appear and sing that song, alas, to find that I've been watching the wrong movies.

God Bless Jimmy Durante, may he live on in fame!

The sweeping up the spotlight bit was made famous by Emmett Kelly. I believe he also originated it. I had the pleasure of watching him do it at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey ccircus back in the 50's and [I believe] the 60's.

My name is Bob Vito. I am a very long time Durante fan. I claim to be the best sounding Durante impersenator alive. If you doubt this call me or email me and I will show you with countless Durante songs including Did You Ever get The Feeling. Here is a short story about Jimmy. Jimmy was afaid to fly and when his manager wanted to hook him up to an engagement in New Orleans James turned it down. After hours of trying to convincehim,Jimmy gave into the flight.
Afterr a not so compfortable first few minutes the great Snarze became at ease and began to entertain his fellow passengers. Upon arrival at the New Orleans airport, Jimmy requested to meet the Pilot,
Jimmy then invited the Pilot to be his guest at opening day. also booked himself for a return flight back with the same pilot.

To make the story short, Jimmy was held over for another week,. The plane lft without Jimmy but never reached home. The plane crashed.
                     This is a true story.
Call me if you want to hear a true Durante impersonation. 718-251-7205

Jimmy Durante
Title        Did you ever have the feeling
Lyrics

Did you ever have the feeling that you wanted to go,
But still had the feeling that you wanted to stay.
You knew it was right, wasn't wrong.
Still you knew you wouldn't be very long.

It's hard to have the feeling that you wanted to go,
But still have the feeling that you wanted to stay.

Started to go
Changed your mind
Started to go again
But changed your mind again

It's hard to have the feeling that you wanted to go,
But still have the feeling that you wanted to stay.

Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, si, do.

I go.
