This song was originally sung by Jimmy Durante in the 1942 movie "The Man Who Came to Dinner", with Monty Woolley, Ann Sheridan, and Bette Davis. In a much later movie, "My Stepmother Is an Alien", Dan Akroyd and Kim Bassinger sang that song, giving their impression of Jimmy Durante.
Of particular interest is when Jimmy sings "Do, re, me, fa, so, la, si, do (known as the "diatonic scale). Note the "si". At first I thought he was in error for not saying "ti". As it turns out, he was exactly correct in saying "si", as it was "si" in the original version of the song, where the first letters were from a biblical quote (one of the hymns to St. John -

He comported himself accordingly. Another song he sang was "Hink-a-dink-a-doo". He had his own show for a bit, I think. I remember him playing the Chez Paree nightclub in Chicago---the place where David Roth, the fine singer/songwriter's father was the matre dee (however that's spelled?). The bit in cartoons where the ending spotlight is swept up at the end of a show with a broom was from, as I recall it, from Jimmy Durante. And even now I hear sound-alike actors imitating Jimmy on commercials here and now in this new century.----J.D. was one of a kind who just exuded the complete definitive feelings of what it meant to be a "nice guy"! He wrote most of the songs he preformed himself. Used in many recordings and used on his Rexall radio show with Garry Moore back in the 50s. Other songs with a special ring to it were "It's my Nose's Birthday"---"I'm The Guy Who Found The Lost Chord"....and "Hot Patatta." I'd like to add I believe I do the best Durante impersonation in the country. Jimmy told me when I did his voice back in the forties, "You're an impostor."

Upon arrival at the New Orleans airport, Jimmy requested to meet the Pilot, Jimmy then invited the Pilot to be his guest at opening day. also booked himself for a return flight back with the same pilot. To make the story short, Jimmy was held over for another week,. The plane lft without Jimmy but never reached home. The plane crashed. This is a true story.
