Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Feeling that you wanted to go (Duran From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 Jul 02 - 08:16 PM It's from the 1944 film "Two Girls and a Sailor." According to Amazon.com (click to see the soundtrack album), the correct title is "Did You Ever Have the Feeling That You Wanted to Stay?" by Jimmy Durante. |

Subject: Did You Ever Have the Feelng That You Wntd to Stay From: GUEST,Mel Windham Date: 23 Sep 02 - 10:46 PM Did you ever get the feeling that you wanted to go, But still had the feeling that you wanted to stay. You knew it was right, wasn't wrong. Still you knew you wouldn't be very long. Go or stay, stay or go, Start to go again and change your mind again. It's hard to have the feeling that you wanted to go, But still have the feeling that you wanted to stay. Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, si, do. I'll go. I'll stay. (Note: I could not find a direct quote. I quoted the above from memory - but I may be off on some of the lines. At any rate, the quote is close - please forgive my inaccuracies.) This song was originally sung by Jimmy Durante in the 1942 movie "The Man Who Came to Dinner", with Monty Woolley, Ann Sheridan, and Bette Davis. In a much later movie, "My Stepmother Is an Alien", Dan Akroyd and Kim Bassinger sang that song, giving their impression of Jimmy Durante.
Of particular interest is when Jimmy sings "Do, re, me, fa, so, la, si, do (known as the "diatonic scale). Note the "si". At first I thought he was in error for not saying "ti". As it turns out, he was exactly correct in saying "si", as it was "si" in the original version of the song, where the first letters were from a biblical quote (one of the hymns to St. John -

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Feeling that you wanted to go (Durante) From: Tannywheeler Date: 14 Nov 05 - 10:27 AM Jimmy Durante was an old vaudevillian, God bless him, who seemed to feel(when I saw him on variety TV shows in the '50s & '60s) that the whole reason anyone was alive was to laugh, relax, and feel good, and his job was to make that happen. He comported himself accordingly. Another song he sang was "Hink-a-dink-a-doo". He had his own show for a bit, I think. He (almost) always closed with the line, "Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." He was a real prize, The Schnozz was. Less fun in the world without him. Tw |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Feeling that you wanted to go (Durante) From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 14 Nov 05 - 11:10 AM I always enjoyed Jimmy Durante on early live TV musical shows. I remember him playing the Chez Paree nightclub in Chicago---the place where David Roth, the fine singer/songwriter's father was the matre dee (however that's spelled?). The bit in cartoons where the ending spotlight is swept up at the end of a show with a broom was from, as I recall it, from Jimmy Durante. And even now I hear sound-alike actors imitating Jimmy on commercials here and now in this new century.----J.D. was one of a kind who just exuded the complete definitive feelings of what it meant to be a "nice guy"! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Feeling that you wanted to go (Durante) From: Tannywheeler Date: 14 Nov 05 - 11:48 AM Short form (maitre d') of French phrase, Art T. "Maitre d'hote" originally, I think. Means the master of the table or dining room, responsible for training wait staff, greeting customers, and seeing that their experience at the particular eating establishment was comfortable/pleasant enough to make them want to be regulars, more or less. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Feeling that you wanted to go (Durante) From: GUEST,Beeka Date: 20 May 08 - 02:25 AM always had Al Pacino's voice in my head singing this in scent of a woman. thanks to you i now know all about the song and may be i can find it somewhere. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Feeling that you wanted to go (Durante) From: GUEST Date: 18 Sep 08 - 04:43 PM "The Feeling That You Wanted To Go" was most likely written by Durante himself. He wrote most of the songs he preformed himself. Used in many recordings and used on his Rexall radio show with Garry Moore back in the 50s. Other songs with a special ring to it were "It's my Nose's Birthday"---"I'm The Guy Who Found The Lost Chord"....and "Hot Patatta." I'd like to add I believe I do the best Durante impersonation in the country. Jimmy told me when I did his voice back in the forties, "You're an impostor."

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Feeling that you wanted to go (Durante) From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 Nov 08 - 07:53 PM idakingfish: If you mean THE CHRISTMAS SONG by Mel Tormé and Robert Wells, which begins "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."—it wasn't specifically written for any film, although it has appeared in many of them. It was first recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946. See Wikipedia and IMDb.com. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Feeling that you wanted to go (Durante) From: GUEST,louisrichards Date: 08 Aug 09 - 10:05 PM Jimmy was the greatest! And sadly missed even now. I thoroughly enjoyed him as a solo performer; however, when he teamed up with Lou Clayton and Eddie Jackson to recreate their old vaudeville trio, the act was amazing. God Bless you, boys, you made a lot of people smile! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Did You Ever Have the Feeling (J Durante) From: GUEST Date: 03 Aug 10 - 10:53 AM Often, I have the feeling that I wanted to go, and yet I'd have the feeling I wanted to stay, and I look and look for the lyrics on old movies, watching Holiday Inn and Christmas in Connecticut over and over waiting for Jimmy Durante to appear and sing that song, alas, to find that I've been watching the wrong movies.
