My second grader must sing 5 measures of a song to try out for her school play. Does anyone have any suggestions? Her guitar teacher says she sings in e flat. Is that good? (if it is good why do they call it flat?) Thanks!

What does she know? Is there a favorite song or two of hers? 5 bars isn't much so I'd let her pick something she likes to sing.

I would encourage her to sing something she is confident about - I'm sure she will pick a key she is comfortable in. just be there for her

Of course she loves stuff like Brittney Spears, I just don't think that would be appropriate. She did think of Suzy Bogguss. Is a child going to be able to sing that?

Are they asking for something like that? I imagine they just want to hear her voice and if she can carry a tune well enough to get the part. Let her do something she knows and is confident in doing.

E flat as a note is the black key to the left of E. As a key, it's the scale that starts on that note and goes up (or down, I guess) from there. It doesn't mean "flat" as in "not on the right pitch." It's a very common singing key (along with A flat).

I do a lot of theatre in my area and some of it involves kids. Most of them have a difficult time preparing a song for the audition. So, I would have her sing Happy Birthday. It's short, everybody knows it (I think) and it will let them know if she can sing in tune....Kids sing it at auditions all the time, in fact, if I have a kid auditioning with a song that sounds horrible, I will often say, "That was great, now how about singing Happy Birthday for me." More often than not, they will sound a lot better.

GUEST mom, try going into the DT database here at Mudcat, see the blue box up top of the forum page? Click there, and browse through the titles with her and see what looks interesting.... then see at the bottom of many of the songs, CLICK TO PLAY-- you should be able to hear the tune with her, and she can learn what she likes. Might find a funny parody of a simple little folk tune she'd like, for instance-- be easy to sing and catch the attention in the audition because of the parody.
