Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: DougR Date: 04 Oct 02 - 06:11 PM Welcome to the Mudcat from a tansplanted Texan to Arizona, AggieBethie. Some of my best friends went to Texas A&M, and I love to tell them Aggie jokes. And yes, Bethie, I am an OLD catter. Jed are you sure you have been around here only a year? I'd have sworn you had been here forever. |
Subject: Houston Houseconcerts: Songbird Sanctuary Series From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Oct 02 - 12:53 PM Posting this here instead of in "Texas Mudcatter" threads because Texas is so BIG! *G* From a mail list, with permission. Reports from attendees welcome! ~Susan ================================================= Announcing the latest house concert series in Houston, Texas. The Songbird Sanctuary is a new venue in the turn-of-the-century Montrose area home and concert garden of Sara Draper and Tom Yeager. Our motto, "Preserving the Songwriters' Art", sums up our mission of delivering to songwriters of acoustic music a discerning audience in an intimate venue, in trade for their most heartfelt and creative performances. Since we know that Texas fans are more attentive (and that artists perform their best) on full stomachs, fans are invited to bring their favorite culinary delight to share in an optional potluck smorgasbord before each performance. Following each concert, all those that bring a guitar or other instrument can help ignite our picking circle and jam session. Like all true house concerts, the full proceeds of the suggested honorarium will go directly to the artists. To help us inaugurate our new venue, Linda Lowe will kick off the lucky 13th season of her Writers In The Round Concert Series at the Songbird Sanctuary on November 1, 2002. We are excited to announce that Linda has convinced Michael Smith to make his long awaited return to our city and to grace us with his very special talents. Supporters of WITR may enjoy the best seats for this concert as part of their season pass if they make an early reservation directly with WITR (713-660-7500) or with us (see below). Other fans should make reservations early from WITR's ticket agent, Main Street Theater Box Office, 4617 Montrose, Houston, TX 77006, (713) 524-6706. Please join us for Michael Smith, and then in January when we will proudly present the incomparable Jack Williams. Additional concerts will be announced next year. Email us for reservations and directions. Sara Draper and Tom Yeager The Songbird Sanctuary songbirdsanctuary@dancepath.com |

Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: AggieBethie Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:21 PM Wonderful! I actually will be in Dallas that weekend. My mom's birthday gift for me is tickets to the King's Singers on Sat. night. I will definately be there. When will you be teaching? Drop me a line at bethanyl@tamu.edu. If anyone else will be there, let me know and we'll all get lunch or something. :-) |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Wesley S Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:04 PM That address didn't work for me. Is there another one we can try? |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: GUEST,Nathan in Texas Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:00 PM I see lots of Texans have responded but no admitted autoharpers. I'm both. If you're home on the second weekend in February, you might want to take in Winterfest in Irving. I'll be leading some of the autoharp workshops there and would be pleased to meet you. You can get details on the festival at http://users2.ev1.net/~dcturner/wfest.htm

Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: AggieBethie Date: 18 Jan 01 - 12:05 PM Very good Allan :-) Sorry. Surely some of you remember college days (but none of you are old of course). As much as I love College Station, it just isn't home. Of course, Dallas really isn't either, but that's where my momma lives so that's where I go. Corpus is more home, but I no longer have a house there :-( Ok, off to class in this awful weather. |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Allan C. Date: 18 Jan 01 - 11:35 AM To clarify: Bethie attends A&M and lives there; but her home is in Dallas. |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Matt Woodbury/Mimosa Date: 18 Jan 01 - 11:32 AM AggieBethie,
I'm in Dallas, and once the Opera company lets me have my life back, I'll be driving over to FW for the Wednesday night YOBB sessions. We could car pool, if you're interested.
I usually think of Jed as the expert on sessions and events in Dallas, though I'm sure there are things others know, too. Welcome. Mimosa |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: AggieBethie Date: 18 Jan 01 - 11:25 AM Yes, I'm at A&M and I will be for quite a while (I'm only a sophomore) I'm trying to find some places around here but haven't had much luck. I'll let you know if I find anything good. |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: JedMarum Date: 18 Jan 01 - 09:27 AM AggieBethie - I was presuming you were still at A&M/College Station. That's why I was asking about music places. Yes there are some good music places in Dallas and Fort Worth. They are listed conveniently on the SCMA site (check out venues, and the calendar). |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Wesley S Date: 18 Jan 01 - 08:58 AM Howdy Bethie - I'm Wesley and I'm over in Ft Worth. We're glad you decided to join up. NTIF is on my list too - I don't think I've missed on in the last 10 years or so. I'm not an autoharpist - I play guitar and mandolin. It's always good to see a younger person who enjoys a lot of the types of music that Mudcatters are into. You'll find a lot of old farts here - but they're NICE old farts. |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: AggieBethie Date: 18 Jan 01 - 12:40 AM I will definately be at NTIF! I live about 15 min from Fair Park, so that will be nice for me. I've heard of a few places, but most seem to be in FW and I don't want to make that drive back at night. Anyone know of Dallas places? There is a great coffee house here that people come and perform at during the weekends. In fact, the Brobdingnagian Bards are coming on Feb. 2.... it's gonna be good! Gig'em. |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Troll Date: 18 Jan 01 - 12:32 AM Welcome AggieBethie. Watch out for 'Spaw. Ignore the man behind the curtian. troll |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: JedMarum Date: 17 Jan 01 - 11:52 PM Welcome AggieBethie - from a fellow North Texan. I live in Dallas and have been Mudcatting for just over a year. Great place, and yes there's some great music in Texas - of the "folk/celtic/renaissance music" you mention. In fact, you need to be sure to come out the North Texas Irish Festival (second biggest in the US) this March 2, 3 and 4. Also check out the thread Spaw quotes above - a number of the DFW area Mudcatter attend this session in Fort Worth ... and if you know of some "folk/celtic/renaissance music" music venues at your school, let me know, 'cause there are a few of us looking to add some new music spots to our list. This is a good place to find out what's up with that sort of music anywhere, not just North Texas, and in fact, not just the US. Glad to have you! |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Jan 01 - 11:12 PM Hi Bethany.....I assume you are the same one who dropped by the radio chat last night?!?!?! Glad to have you at the 'Cat...........but I figure we don't put you in charge of bonfires huh? (sorry)............Anyway.... Here's a blue clicky thing to the Dallas Seesion thread....CLICK HERE We have a number of good folks in the Dallas area and I think you'll find some awful good music. There are also a lot of autoharp players here at the 'Cat and if you research some old threads you'll get lots of info. Here's what you do.....Enter autoharp in the filter box at the top of the main threads page and set the refresh (in the pulldown menu) to two years and you'll find lots of conversations (threads). The 'Cat is a wonderful place, a little village really, and its populated with some talented, intelligent, erudite, loving, and musical people who are glad to help you out or give advice of argue about things or research music and instruments. Sadly, I ain't one of them, but trust me, there are a lot of them around! Enjoy yourself and welcome to the Mudcat Cafe. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: AggieBethie Date: 17 Jan 01 - 10:00 PM haha... I know some really good ones though :-P |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Midchuck Date: 17 Jan 01 - 09:56 PM Is it true what they say about hiring a crew of Aggies to put new sod on your lawn? That you have to keep yelling at them, from the windows, "GREEN SIDE UP!" (?) p. |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: StillyRiverSage (inactive) Date: 17 Jan 01 - 09:46 PM I have been lurking on a thread called "Dallas/Ft Worth Session II" that I just refreshed so you can find it. You can go read posts from lots of folks in this area. Use your personal page to "trace" the threads you are interested in. Maggie (a reluctant transplant and a UTA Maverick MA) |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Sarah2 Date: 17 Jan 01 - 09:39 PM Well, I'm in Amarillo -- a rather longish drive for an evening. There are several in the Dallas area who will shortly check this thread, I'm sure. Someone asked about folk in Corpus not long ago, too, having just moved there and finding only Tejano everywhere. And Houston is loaded with places and people. I'm sure they'll be checking in soon. Your thread title is bound to draw them. If you're ever cursed enough to become lost in the panhandle, let me know. You can usually find me here at least once a day. Sarah |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: AggieBethie Date: 17 Jan 01 - 09:35 PM Wow, you people are fast! |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Giac Date: 17 Jan 01 - 09:34 PM Hi AggieBeth - does the "Aggie" mean College Station? Welcome to Mudcat. There are a lot of Texas Mudcats for sure, and some of them will be along soon. Til then, enjoy the Cat. Giac |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: AggieBethie Date: 17 Jan 01 - 09:32 PM Well, I go to school at A&M right now (hence the Aggie..lol.. sorry), but my family lives in Dallas so I spend quite a bit of time there. I grew up in Corpus Christi, so I go there occasionally, and I frequent Houson on occasion. Yeah, that's about it. |
Subject: RE: Texas anyone? From: Sarah2 Date: 17 Jan 01 - 09:28 PM AB, Texas is a bit large -- and there are Mudcatters all over it. "Wharya at?" Sarah |
Subject: Texas anyone? From: AggieBethie Date: 17 Jan 01 - 09:22 PM Howdy! I just joined and found this site as I was looking for folk and autoharp music. I was just wondering 1) Is anyone in here from Texas? and 2)Does anyone play the autoharp? I've just recently fallen in love with folk/celtic/renaissance music and I've been downloading songs out the wazzu from MP3.com. (Great site by the way--good garage bands!) Anyways, back to my homework (The life of a college student--geez!) Have a good day! :-) *hugs* |
