Subject: any folkclubs in Perth and Fremantle Aus
From: TamthebamfraeScotland

I'm just wondering is there any folk clubs in the Perth and Fremantle areas, as I'm going on hoilday to Austrtalia in the Autumn, and when I was there last year I found out where they were however they wern't within walking distance, or train distance either. The folk clubs were in the hills that surround Perth.

So I'm just wondering if they are any Folk clubs in the local Perth or Fremantle areas.

Tom

Here is my list of Oz folk links. Near the top is the link to the WA Folk Federation site, with a complete list of affiliated clubs.

Hope this helps.

Garry Gillard

Go to "Folk and other clubs in WA".

Oh, and, in Fremantle (where I live), there is (not a folk club but) a multicultural performance space which sometimes features folkies. I saw Roy Bailey there!

Here is their website.

cheers, Garry Gillard

You have a good list of links on your site, Garry. Any chance of getting the Folk Australia
site listed? Among other things it lists some WA gigs and has a section for clubs and festivals in WA. It also has reviews of CDs by some WA artists and carries CDs for WA artists such as Ken Ferguson, Steve and Ros Barnes and David Hyams in The Shed, which is part of the site.

Thanks, Roo: I've added the entry for Folk Australia to my list of Oz folk links. I did a lot of work at the time setting the list up, but now I rely on ppl like yourself to help keep it up to date.

So: thanks a lot!

Garry

(Your site is great!)

Is there an JoeOfferBot which detects idiotic repetition of message, as in most of mine above, and sends them to limbo? Or worse?

What group in the Freemantle area is responsible for putting together the fine sea song "Don't Sail on the Emma" and how does one get in touch with them to order a CD?

There are a couple of newsletters which update weekly, contact the following to go on the opt-in mailing list

Steve.Barnes@csiro.au
carmel@carmelcharlton.com

There are folk clubs which tend to be performance venues, world music is top class, there are a couple of session type folk clubs, plastic pom pubs celebrate StAndrews Day, there are Scottish groups, we even have Morris Dancers. Use your contacts, folk sessions are often not publicised. Major Festival is Fairbridge after Easter and a smaller one at Nannup.
If you perform, put the word round

Bugsby and Stewie-

Thanks for the info on Mike Murray & Leslie Sylvester. "Don't Sail on the Emma" is one fine song. Our friend Joanne Sousas from Gloucester (Massachusetts) introduced us to that song. I am curious whether the song is based on a real story.

Someday I must venture out to Western Australia. Looking at my map it's just a few centimeters from Sydney! And maybe a meter or two from my home in Maine.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, in Glebe heading out to Leichhardt

why didn't ya say -

'Don't sign on the Emma'

by Mike Murray & Lesley Silvester from 'Strangers on the Shore'

(intro from CD booklet)

The Emma was plagued with misfortune from the start. Bought to Western Australia by the pastoralist & merchant Walter Padbury in 1865, she only managed to complete two voyages up and down the coast of Western Australia, before she was lost on her third voyage, returning from Roebourne to Fremantle. Over a hundred years later her wreck was located on a reef off Coral bay. During her short but eventful life on the coast, she suffered a host of misfortunes, and quickly gained a reputation as an unlucky shp, to be shunned by sailors.

I found their website, fortunately the bit I just typed up was not there! but this was MP3 sample of "Emma" & the mini description "A jinxed schooner makes two eventful voyages out of Fremantle and vanishes on the third, never to be seen for a hundred years."

There are MP3 samples & descriptions of every track on this site.
